Aerolineas Argentinas orders four Airbus A330-200s

Aerolรญneas Argentinas (Buenos Aires) has signed a purchase agreement for four Airbus A330-200s to renew and consolidate their widebody fleet. Aerolรญneas Argentinas will announce the engine selection at a later date.

Argentinaโ€™s flagship carrier will deploy the new A330 aircraft for medium and long haul routes from their Buenos Aires hub to destinations throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States. The airline currently operates eight Airbus A340-300s (above), four A340-200s and four A330-200s.

BQB Lineas Aereas fills the Pluna void in Uruguay

BQB Lineas Aereas (Punta del Este and Montevideo, Uruguay) has been quietly filling the void left by the demise of Pluna Lineas Aereas Uruguayas in Montevideo since the failure on July 5, 2012. The airline, sensing an opportunity, leased in Airbus A320-214 EC-LLJ (msn 4661) from Vueling Airlines (in Vueling colors, with BQB titles) on November 28, 2013. The carrier now serves eight routes from the capital, probably dashing the hopes of reviving a new employee-lead version of Pluna. Seasonal service from Montevideo was started on December 14 to Florianapolis, Brazil. On the following day, service to Santiago, Chile was started according Anna Aero.

Aerolineas Argentinas finalizes its order for 20 Boeing 737-800s

Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires) , the flag carrier of Argentina, and Boeing (Chicago) have completed an agreement for 20 Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes.

At a signing ceremony in Buenos Aires, Dr. Mariano Recalde, president of Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral Lineas Aereas, and Van Rex Gallard, vice president of Sales, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, formalized the agreement, which will help Aerolineas build on a fleet of 26 Next-Generation 737s currently operated by the Argentine carrier.

Gallard noted that the agreement extends a long legacy of partnership between Boeing and Aerolineas Argentinas. “Our partnership with Aerolineas extends back to the days of the Douglas DC-3”.

LAN Argentina is evicted from its hangar in Buenos Aires, can it survive?

LAN Argentina (Buenos Aires) has been served notice to terminate its maintenance hangar lease at the downtown Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires. The Argentine airline of the LATAM Group is being evicted from the Aeroparque hangar although it has been faithfully paying its rent and has a contract through 2023. The carrier needs the hangar to maintain operations in Argentina. LAN Argentina has stated it will take the forced eviction to court in Argentina.

The airline competes against state-run Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires). According to this report by the BBC, the current government of Argentina, headed by Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has been accused of protecting state-run companies in the past.

Meanwhile the government of Argentina has accused LAN Airlines and LAN Argentina of stirring up worker sentiment against Argentina.

Aerolรญneas Argentinas (Buenos Aires) is displaying its retired former British Airways Boeing 737-236 LV-ZYG (msn 21795) at the Tecnรณpolis Fair in Villa Martelli, Buenos Aires (see map below). The fair wasย created in 2010 to show the achievements of the Argentine government over the past 200 years of the modern history of the country. The former airliner is displayed in the new 2010 livery of Aerolรญneas Argentinas. The display features LCD displays on each window to simulate the takeoff, the flight and the landing of a real aircraft.

There are groups of up to 75 people that have to check-in (as in an airport) before boarding the Boeing 737. The show lasts around 15 minutes.
LV-ZYG was unassembled at the airport and trucked to the city location, reassembled and then “painted’ in the new livery of Aerolรญneas Argentinas using stickers.

Air Lease Corporation announces the placement of six new Boeing 737-800s with Aerolรญneas Argentinas

Air Lease Corporation (Los Angeles) announced a lease agreement with Aerolรญneas Argentinasย (Buenos Aires)ย for six new Boeing 737-800 aircraft, each on lease for twelve years. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between November 2014 and February 2016.

Austral’s McDonnell Douglas DC-9-81 LV-WFN is being preserved in Argentina

Austral DC-9-81 LV-WFN (07)(Grd) ODB (AR)(LRW)

Austral Lรญneas Aรฉreas‘ย (Buenos Aires)ย DC-9-81 (MD-81)ย LV-WFNย (msn 48025) was retired from service on February 2, 2012 and flown to Cรณrdoba International Airport-Pajas Blancas on March 16, 2012 for preservation.ย It was one of the oldest (if not the oldest) DC-9-81 in service.

LV-WFN performed its final flight between Cรณrdoba to Morรณn Air Force Base in Buenos Aires (MOR) on February 26. The aircraft was donated by Austral Lรญneas Aรฉreas to Museo Nacional de Aeronรกutica, as it was the first of the DC-9 Super 80 airliner to enter service with Austral in 1981. This plane was retired from service on March 2012 and was preserved waiting for a decision about its fate. Lately the aircraft was being readied before being ferried to Morรณn as AU 2080, unpressurized and with landing gear deployed.

LAN Airlines to introduce the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on November 1

LAN Airlines (Santiago) is planning to introduce its new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on November 1 on the Santiago-Buenos Aires (Ezeiza) per Airline Route. The Santiago-Lima route will follow on November 4.

Chilean volcanic ash halts flights in Argentina and Uruguay

Argentina and Uruguay suspended some flights at Buenos Aires and Montevideo due to an ash cloud from Chile’s Mount Puyehue volcano, which has disrupted air travel since it first erupted earlier this year according to this article by IOL News

Flights were especially disrupted at both Ezeiza and Jorge Newbery airports in Buenos Aires.
