Aegean Airlines to launch Athens-Copenhagen flights on May 22, 2014

Aegean Airlines (Athens) will start a new route, three days a week, between Athens and Copenhagen starting on May 22, 2014. The new route will be operated with Airbus A32os. The Copenhagen route is part of an overall expansion plan in 2014 (see below).

Previously on October 31 Aegean outlined its future plans now that Olympic Air has been acquired:

Aegean Airlines presented the benefits, arising from the acquisition of Olympic Air, for the company, the passengers, the society and the Greek tourism, as well as its overall strategy, during a press conference held on October 31 in Athens.

In the immediate period of the next 6 to 14 months, following the acquisition of Olympic Air, the resulting synergies will lead to an enhanced fleet and an immediate expansion of the network, to the enhancement of the connectivity in Greece and abroad, as well as to cost savings from the consolidation of Administrative Services, with benefits saving up to โ‚ฌ35 million annually.

Aegeanโ€™s objective and commitment is to pass these benefits to the passengers with more competitive rates, enhancement of privileges for loyal customers of both companies and network expansion.

In terms of benefits arising regarding the prices, Aegean has already announced the launch of two new categories of fares in economy class, the GoLight and Flex fares, with prices starting from โ‚ฌ24 to Athens, which ensure money-saving and unlimited flexibility respectively. These new fares will be offered to Olympic Airโ€™s passengers from February 2014.

Moreover, following a recent meeting with representatives of the Greek region, the company announced a package of initiatives to support the remote areas of Greece, by integrating the second lowest fare of โ‚ฌ39 from/to remote areas in order to boost the demand, by introducing new charges for the connection between the remote islands and abroad with a significant reduction in travel cost up to โ‚ฌ140, as well as by increasing capacity during July – September, at no additional cost to the state, where it is commercially and operationally feasible.

Aegean will make dynamic start in 2014 also in terms of its network, with a further expansion of international destinations and new routes.

Analytically, Aegean announced the addition of 15 new destinations from Athens in 2014, reaching to 47 overall international destinations from Athens. Specifically the new destinations include: Birmingham in England, Marseille and Nantes in France, Zurich in Switzerland, Hamburg, Hanover and Nuremberg in Germany, Copenhagen in Denmark, Catania in Italy, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Beirut in Lebanon and Paphos in Cyprus, as well as four additional cities including Stockholm, Sweden or Oslo in Norway, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Overall in 2014, 45 to 50 new routes will be added from the eight bases of the company in Athens and in the Greek region, including the new base in Chania. ย As a result, Aegean and Olympic Air will jointly cover in 2014 a network of more than 250 routes, of which 205 or more are international routes and 47 to 50 domestic routes.

The progress so far and the development of Aegean is based on collaborative effort and support by six major business groups (Vassilakis, A & P Laskarides Constantakopoulos A., D. Ioannou, G. David, Piraeus Bank) and 52,000 shareholders who continue to support the company into its dynamic new course that appears after the acquisition of Olympic Air.

Air France‘s (Paris) CFO Philippe Clavia complained in a letter to Alitalia (2nd) (Rome) about how the Italian airline failed to inform its airline partners, namely the Air France-KLM Group, about key meetings concerning a new capital infusion. Although the group finally voted for the recent infusion of capital, Air France is upset about how the whole event was handled according to this report by Reuters.

Further, Air France-KLM was not provided any written information, justย “orally and in a cryptic way”, often just in Italian, the newspaper Il Messaggero reported, quoting the letter.

Air France to cut another 2,800 jobs in 2014, Transavia France to get 5 additional aircraft

Air France (Paris) has announced a new round of job cuts as the airline is headed towards its sixth consecutive annual operating loss due to weakening air travel demand. The carrier is plan to cut another 2,800 jobs in 2014. The airline is already cutting around 5,120 positions by the end of this year according to Reuters.

The airline issued this statement and update on its recovery plan:

Air France management presented an update on Transform 2015 to the Central Works Council.

Air Franceโ€™s recovery has begun and Transform 2015 is taking effect. In the first half, the implementation of measures led operating income to increase by 100 million euros. However, in 2013, the Air France Group will not achieve its objective of returning to equilibrium.

To ensure the sustainability of the Company and to continue investing for our customers, the return to equilibrium in 2014 is essential. This return to equilibrium requires the deployment of all action plans and the completion of Transform 2015, which requires additional measures to reduce costs and accelerate the recovery of short and medium-haul operations and cargo.

ADDITIONAL MEASURES TO REDUCE COSTS ACROSS THE COMPANY

The number of excess staff has been estimated at 2,800 people for 2014. New Voluntary Departure Plans will be implemented. They will be thoroughly discussed with staff representatives and unions as from October 4. In addition, Air France will continue its policy of wage moderation in 2014 and a better adaptation of business costs to the seasonality of operations will be required.

ACCELERATED RECOVERY OF SHORT AND MEDIUM-HAUL OPERATIONS AND CARGO

Concerning short and medium-haul operations, the Air France Group intends to maintain its strong presence on the French market. It has therefore decided to develop the activity of Transavia France on departure from Paris-Orly, to adjust its domestic point-to-point network and provincial bases, to increase seasonal capacity and to reorganize French stations.

โ€ข Transavia France, which will operate five additional aircraft as from the summer 2014 season, will expand its offering to new high-potential European destinations on departure from Paris-Orly. In parallel, the Air Franceโ€™s point-to-point network will be adjusted downwards. Also, the seasonal adjustment of the schedule implemented in 2013 at the provincial bases has been a success and will be continued in 2014.

โ€ข For all French stations, a change in production methods is necessary to ensure the Air France Group is in line with market standards, to better handle customers and reduce costs in a sustainable way. This will induce a reorganization of processes and a greater use of outsourcing. The objectives, station by station, will be specified at the Central Works Council meeting on 4 October.

Concerning cargo operations, the contribution of hold cargo remains essential to the long-haul economy. Furthermore, the cargo capacity of holds on passenger aircraft carries an increasing share of global air freight and the global air freight market is permanently in overcapacity. In this context, Air France has decided to refocus its cargo fleet on its two Boeing 777F. The Boeing 747 all-cargo aircraft will leave the fleet in 2015, at the same time as the 747 will leave the passenger fleet.

In addition, cargo operations at Paris-Orly, which have never reached a sufficient size, are currently operating at non-market costs. For this reason, an outsourcing project will be implemented in 2014.

AMBITIOUS DEVELOPMENT OF GROWTH SECTORS

Growth will continue on long-haul routes and new routes will continue to be launched. In parallel, the renewal of the long-haul fleet will be accelerated with the early retirement of the Boeing 747 by 2015 and the arrival of the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, respectively in 2017 and 2018.

At Paris-Charles de Gaulle, a new “Future hub” plan is being set up to enhance the hubโ€™s attractiveness and competitiveness. It will be based in particular on the development of technological changes in passenger operations, as well as the move upmarket of Air France products and services.

In the engineering and maintenance sector, Air France will continue its development of engine and equipment products with its external customers. This strategy is contributing to Air Franceโ€™s recovery thanks to lower maintenance costs and a positive contribution to operating income.

“Transform 2015 is taking effect and has had positive results in 2012. Air France is continuing its thorough transformation based on the commercial development of its markets with high growth potential, the move upmarket of its products and services and the reduction of its costs. I intend, together with all Air France staff, to concentrate on customer service and the successful recovery of our Company”ย declared Frรฉdรฉric Gagey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Air France.

Finnair looks back at its historic flight 005 to New York

Finnair (Helsinki) added its first long-haul international route on May 15, 1968 from Helsinki to New York (JFK) via stops in Copenhagen and Amsterdam. The new route was opened with new Douglas DC-8-62CFs, the first having arrived in Helsinki on February 8, 1968.

Tomi Tervo on the Finnair Blog looks back at this pioneering route for the carrier:

takeoff

You always get that extra little buzz when it says โ€˜AY 005โ€™ on the flight preparation papers. One long-haul flight out of many, but for us itโ€™s the oldest and most traditional one. Finnairโ€™s first long-haul destination was New York, and the route ran via Copenhagen and Amsterdam on a DC-8 aircraft. Pilots, at least, remember Charles Lindbergh crossing the Atlantic 86 years ago as a milepost in aviation history. For the pilot, crossing the Atlantic no longer means bearings twirled with a plotter as messy lines on a route map, or rough navigation with tops and hyperbolae of positions, cigarette stubs in the ashtray next to three weatherworn aviator hats. Nowadays, the route is operated with an Airbus 330, with modern equipment to enable a safe crossing of the ocean with two pilots, without navigators or aviation engineers. However, there still is something special about it from the viewpoint of the pilot.

The route to New York isnโ€™t run of the mill. The flight planners choose the route according to favourable large air currents. Sometimes we fly from the south from above Northern Scotland. This time the route runs from above Iceland and over Greenland. Unlike on the continent, when flying above the ocean we are off the radar and beyond the reach of air traffic controlโ€™s monitoring. In addition, there are no radio transmitters in the middle of the ocean so there is no undisturbed, continuous speech connection to air traffic control. The third thing to pay attention to is the shortage of alternate airports. The pilots should always have their eye on the nearest alternate airport along the route that is located no less than two (sometimes three) hours away from the plane. On this flight, the alternate airports are Keflavik and Goose Bay. The Greenland terrain is high and mountainous. When flying above it, the pilots revise the special procedures in case a malfunction is detected in one of the engines or pressurisation and altitude has to be decreased.

greenland

Even when above the ocean, the navigation is done normally using GPS (i.e. satellite navigation). However, the waypoints are latitude-longitude coordinates, unlike anywhere else, and there are no earth stations or beacons for a backup. Instead of the magnetic north, the direction reference is the fixed geometric location of the North Pole. โ€˜Finnair five, cleared to New York via 65N000W, 66N010W, 67N020Wโ€ฆ.โ€™ reads the air traffic controller for us close to the western coast of Norway. As there is no radar monitoring by air traffic control, the spacing out between the aircrafts is based on following the provided route clearances and speeds with pinpoint accuracy. After receiving the clearance, both pilots carefully cross-check the directions and nautical miles, and that they tally with the aircraftโ€™s navigation equipment. After that, itโ€™s โ€˜Have a good flight!โ€™ Bit by bit, the voice of the air traffic controller fades beyond the reach of the VHF radios. A little bit of Charles Lindbergh in us starts to stir.

Over the Atlantic, there is a text-based messaging system with satellite connection to air traffic control. But the system is quite new and not entirely without its problems. That is why the progress of the planes is still tracked by radio operators using almost one hundred-year-old HF radio technology. The HF signal bounces between the ocean and the layers of the atmosphere far beyond the horizon, and its range is in theory thousands of miles. But at the same time, the connection is prone to the changes in the day and the sunspot rhythm. There are a lot of noise, scratching sounds and breaks in the connection. โ€˜Iceland radio, Iceland radio, Finnair 5, position 65N030W at 1810, request SELCAL on DM-BFโ€ฆโ€™

A new continent. The east coast of Canada, Newfoundland and the vast wilderness. The feeling of already reaching your destination when there are still around three hours to go. Moncton, Bangor, Boston. More andย more planes start to circle the skies when approaching New York. We often move in on the John F. Kennedy Airport above the beautiful capes and islands of Long Island. The airport itself is one of the most intense in the whole wide world. As the silhouette of Manhattan looms in the background, the air is swarming with traffic in all directions, at all altitudes. The airport often uses up to three runways simultaneously. There are landings and takeoffs every couple of minutes. Especially during the rush hour, the air traffic controllers read the clearances at the double, with a strong east coast accent. They are tough professionals who expect quality also from the pilots. โ€˜Finnair five heavy turn right on juliet after landing 757 cross 22R keep rolling join alfa hold short of november charlie monitor groung point ninerโ€™, you have to hear and roger your own clearance without delay.

Snowfall and exceptional weather is a chapter of its own. The air traffic in New York may be badly disrupted then. You may be in for a long wait in the air. When the weather forecast is poor, the captain needs to prepare for various scenarios already prior departure by reserving enough fuel. Usually the cockpit receives advance information from Finnairโ€™s New York ground personnel on the available runways, weather and congestion a few hours before landing. We know many of that crew already. One known to all was Maucca Leppรคlรค, who was the Manager of Finnairโ€™s New York ground services for 23 years, but recently retired. Now the operations are led by Ulla-Maija Baker. Greetings to all, itโ€™s always nice to see you.

The hotel transportation runs smoothly in a relaxed atmosphere as the crew discusses what happened on the flight. The blocks of Brooklyn, inner city kids playing basketball and the neon signs of garages and diners blink in the windows. This nation of drivers is returning home on four lanes. Over the radio, I can make out Bruce Springsteenโ€™s guitar, or maybe itโ€™s just my imagination. Arrival at the hotel, saying good evening to all other crew members. Hang up the uniform and put it in the closet. The metropolis quietens down into the early evening as the sun slowly floats down and hides behind the silhouette of New Jersey. Thatโ€™s us, Charles and I. A brief moment when the silver wings on the uniformโ€™s jacket seem to shine a little brighter than usual.

Commenting on the results, Carolyn McCall, easyJet Chief Executive said:

โ€œEasyJet delivered a strong first half performance, demonstrating the Companyโ€™s structural advantage in the European short-haul market against both legacy and low cost competition, and a continuing resilience against a challenging European macro-economic environment.

Our performance reflects measurable progress against EasyJetโ€™s four key strategic objectives that have been amply demonstrated by a significant reduction in the loss for the first half and significant improvement in ROCE over the same period.

Whilst there is always the potential for unexpected events to impact short term financial performance, the outlook for the second half of the financial year combined with the strong reduction in first half losses means that EasyJet expects to deliver improved returns and profitability for the year ending 30 September 2013.โ€

In other news, the company is nearing a decision to order the re-engined Airbus A320neo or the Boeing 737 MAX.
