Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-8AS ET-ANB crashes into the sea off of Lebabnon

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) tragically lost its ex-Ryanair Boeing 737-8AS ET-ANB (msn 29935, ex EI-CSW) this morning (January 25) off the coast of Lebanon (not newly-acquired ET-AMZ). ET-ANB was built in 2002 and was delivered to Ethiopian on September 12, 2009. Flight ET 409 had just departed Beirut en route to Addis Ababa with 90 passengers and crew on board. There were reports of thunderstorms in the area. Search crews are looking for debris and any possible survivors.

Ethiopian issued this initial press release:

07:02 AM – Local Time

Ethiopian flight ET-409 scheduled to operate from Beirut to Addis Ababa on January 25th lost contact with the Lebanese air controllers shortly after take off. The flight departed at 02:35 Lebanese time from Beirut International Airport.

Flight ET-409 carries 82 passenger plus 8 Ethiopian Crew members. Out of the total passengers 23 are Ethiopian, 51 Lebanese, 1 Turkish, 1 French, 2 British, 1 Russian, 1 Canadian, 1 Syrian, 1 Iraqi nationals.

A team is already working on gathering all pertinent information. An investigative team has already been dispatched to the scene and we will release further information as further updates are received.

Taban Air’s (Tehran) Tupolev Tu-154M RA-85787 (msn 93A971) has crashed and burned on landing at Mashhad, Iran this morning (January 24). There were reports of 43 injured passengers and crew.

Royal Air Freight Learjet 35A N720RA crashes at Chicago Executive Airport

Royal Air Freight (Waterford) Learjet 35A freighter registered N720A (msn 156) with two crew members crashed on approach to Chicago Executive Airport on January 5. Both crew members died in the crash.

Kiunga Aviation Cessna 185E P2-MJL crashes in Papua New Guinea, six passengers killed

Kiunga Aviation (Lae) Cessna 185E P2-MJL (msn 01947) crashed yesterday (December 30) in Marobe Province. Six passengers were killed in the accident.

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) will have to replace Boeing 737-823 N977AN (msn 29550) as this picture shows the extreme amount of damage at Kingston to the fuselage, broken in three spots. ย This picture confirms the airliner is an insurance write off (WO).

The news media has already started its speculation on what caused the accident including possible pilot fatigue and the relatively fast landing speed (160 MPH) of the aircraft. ย This is from the Dallas News:

American Airlines’ (Dallas/Fort Worth) Boeing 737-823 N977AN (msn 29550) as flight AA 331 from Washington (Reagan National) to Kingston, Jamaica via the Miami hub overshot the runway at KIN on landing with 148 passengers and six crew members in a heavy rainstorm late last night. The aircraft is substantially damaged (a possible insurance write off).

Airlink Embraer ERJ 135 overruns the runway at George

Airlink (Johannesburg) suffered through another accident yesterday (December 7) at George (South Africa). Embraer ERJ 135 ZS-SJW (msn 145423) overran the wet runway on landing and crashed through the security fence ending up on a road. The regional jet was operating flight SA 8625. There were only minor injuries.

Seair Seaplanes’ Beaver C-GTMC crashes in Gulf Islands

Seair Seaplanes’ (Vancouver) de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Mk. 1 Beaver C-GTMC (msn 1171) crashed on takeoff from Lyall Harbour (Satura Island, Gulf Islands, BC) on November 29. Unfortunately six people died in the tragic crash.

Newly-delivered Avient Aviation McDonnell Douglas MD-11F Z-BAV crashes today at Shanghai

Avient Aviation (Harare) took delivery on November 20, 2009 of its first McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (F) freighter registered Z-BAV (msn 48408, ex N408SH/PR-LGD). Today (November 28) the ex-VARIG airliner caught on fire on takeoff tragically crashed at Shanghai (Pu Dong). Three (of seven) American crew members died in the crash. The aircraft is destroyed.
