Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport today opens 10 new gates for American Eagle in Terminal B

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) today unveiled a total of ten new gates and a new concourse extension at Terminal B. The new gates, B30-B39 (see map below), will be used to serve American Eagle regional jet flights. The concourse and new gates are part of DFW’s ongoing Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program (TRIP), a multi-year, $2.3 billion capital improvement program to redefine the Airport’s four original terminals which first opened in 1974.

DFW logo

“These new gates give DFW Airport additional capacity for hosting flights in Terminal B, and a beautiful new space for customers to enjoy as they await their flights,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW Airport. “We’ve also added some very nice customer touches in the new concourse, including a comfort zone seating area, charging stations, and of course, our fast and free WiFi.”

The new concourse at Terminal B offers an additional 20,000 square feet of gate space for customers. The entrance to the new concourse is adjacent to a Skylink people mover station for fast and efficient connections to any gate at DFW. The new concourse construction replaced one gate at Terminal B, for an overall net gain of nine gates to DFW.

With the addition of the ten gates in the new concourse at Terminal B, DFW now has a total of 164 gates across its five terminals. It is the first new terminal concourse to open at DFW since the grand opening of Terminal D in July of 2005.

TRIP is redefining DFW Airport for the next generation of air travel customers, with all new glass, floors and finishes, along with updated technology and renewed infrastructure. Under TRIP, renovation work continues in other parts of Terminal B, as well as in Terminals A and E.

Emirates to upgrade the Dallas/Fort Worth route to the Airbus A380 on October 1

Emirates (Dubai) has announced it will bring its Airbus A380 to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), launching the first scheduled A380 service at the airport.

On October 1, 2014, the worldโ€™s largest passenger aircraft will touch down at DFW with a daily service between Dallas/Fort Worth, the worldโ€™s fourth busiest airport, and the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Dallas/Fort Worth will become the 28th international destination to which Emirates operates the aircraft, joining New York (JFK) and Los Angeles which are already served by the A380.

Emirates started flying to Dallas/Fort Worth in 2012 with a Boeing 777-200 LR, the first passenger carrier to fly nonstop to the Middle East from DFW. The introduction of the 489-seat A380, powered by U.S.-made GE GP7200 engines, is a direct response to demand with over 370,000 Emiratesโ€™ passengers travelling between Dallas and Dubai to date.

DFW Airport is making its final preparations for the arrival of the Emirates A380 with the construction of a second level jet bridge in Terminal D and modifications to the airfield, ramps and taxiways. Terminal D opened in 2005 with A380 capabilities already built into its design, so the final additions to make DFW ready for the A380 are relatively minor.

Emiratesโ€™ A380 is a wide-bodied double decker aircraft with a capacity of 489 passengers including 14 First Class Private Suites, 76 lie-flat beds in Business Class and 399 spacious seats in Economy Class.

Powered by GP7200 engines which burn up to twenty percent less fuel per seat than its nearest competitor, Emiratesโ€™ A380s have lower carbon dioxide emissions and thirty percent better fuel efficiency than the ICAO global fleet average. This is the most significant advancement in reducing fuel consumption and emissions in four decades. Emirates also stands apart from the rest as the average age of the fleet is less than half that of many European airlines. Emirates is the largest operator of the A380 and continues to work closely with Airbus to further reduce weight of future A380s by using a range of lightweight materials that account for twenty five percent of its structure.

The Emirates A380 service will operate daily as EK 222, departing Dallas/Fort Worth at 12:35 and arriving in Dubai at 12:20 the following day. EK 221 departs Dubai at 02:45 and arrives at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at 09:45 the same day.

American Airlines is coming to Hong Kong

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) today announced it plans to launch its first-ever nonstop service from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) next year.

The new daily service between DFW and Hong Kong will be operated with a Boeing 777-300 ER, marking the first time American will deploy its flagship aircraft to Asia. The new service between DFW and Shanghai will be operated with a 777-200 aircraft. Pending regulatory approval, customers can travel on these new routes beginning summer 2014.

Both routes will be operated as part of American’s joint business agreement with fellowย oneworldยฎalliance member Japan Airlines. The service to Hong Kong will add a new destination to American’s international network, and the service to Shanghai complements American’s existing service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Also, through American’s extensive network out of Dallas/Fort Worth, customers traveling from Shanghai and Hong Kong will now have access to nearly 200 destinations throughout North, Central and South America.

In addition to welcoming the 777-300 ER to Asia with the launch of service to Hong Kong, American will take delivery of and deploy additional 777-300 ER aircraft to key international markets in 2014, including routes from American’s hub in Miami for the first time. American will begin operating the 777-300 ER on one of its two daily flights from Miami to London Heathrow (LHR) in January, and one of its four daily flights from Miami to Sao Paulo (GRU) in November 2014. American will also operate an additional 777-300 ER between New York JFK and London Heathrow in March. By the end of 2014, American will have 16 of the 20 777-300 ER aircraft it has on order deployed throughout its network.

With the introduction of an additional 777-300 ER between JFK and London Heathrow, customers will have the opportunity to travel in fully lie-flat First Class or Business Class seats on all 12 frequencies American operates together with British Airways between the two airports, providing more fully lie-flat seats than any other airline partnership in the market.

Together, American and British Airways provide customers in the competitive New York to London travel market more service than any other airline partnership, with 17 daily nonstop flights from New York-area airports to London-area airports. In addition to the combined 12 daily trips between JFK and London Heathrow, British Airways also offers direct access from Newark to London Heathrow and the only service by any carrier between JFK and London City (LCY), giving business travelers more convenient access to the financial district in the heart of London.ย ย  ย ย

The State of Texas now supports the American-US Airways merger

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) and US Airways (Phoenix) received good news in its efforts to merge. The State of Texas has dropped out of the group opposing the merger along with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Texas now supports the merger and issued this statement:

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, AMR Corporation (Dallas/Fort Worth), the parent company of American Airlines, Inc., and US Airways Group, Inc. (Phoenix) have announced they have reached an agreement for the Texas Attorney General to support the proposed merger of American and US Airways.

Under the terms of the agreement, the new American Airlines will maintain scheduled daily service to more than twenty airports in Texas. In addition, the agreement provides that Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport be maintained as a large hub airport for the combined airline and that the new American will maintain its headquarters in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The State of Texas had previously joined the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) as co-plaintiff in its pending suit to block the merger of American Airlines and US Airways. With today’s agreement, the Texas Attorney General has agreed to withdraw his participation in the DOJ’s lawsuit.

“I’m pleased we were able to find common ground and gain the carefully considered support of the Attorney General in our home state,” said Tom Horton, chairman, president and CEO of AMR. “This is an important step forward for American Airlines, for Texas, and for our customers and people of both American and US Airways. Texas has long played a lead role in our company’s history, and this agreement is assurance of our commitment to maintain and enhance the outstanding levels of service and connectivity that the new American will provide to the citizens of Texas. This merger will enhance job security and career opportunities for our combined Texas based employee base of nearly 25,000. The combined airline will fly more people and more goods to more places while providing more competition to benefit customers in the U.S. and abroad. We thank Attorney General Abbott for his partnership in finding a solution and also thank the people of American and US Airways for their continued support of the merger.”

Doug Parker, chairman and CEO of US Airways, said the following: “We are grateful to have the support of Attorney General Abbott. In addition, the support for the merger from the employees of American Airlines and US Airways has been overwhelming. This combination makes sense for our customers, employees and the communities we serve. We are dedicated to completing this merger on behalf of all of them.”

Texas airports included in the agreement include:

  • Abilene Regional Airport
  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
  • Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport
  • Corpus Christi International Airport
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
  • East Texas Regional Airport
  • Easterwood Airport
  • El Paso International Airport
  • Houston William P. Hobby Airport
  • Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport
  • Jack Brooks Regional Airport
  • Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport
  • Laredo International Airport
  • Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport
  • McAllen-Miller International Airport
  • Midland International Airport
  • Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport
  • San Angelo Regional Airport
  • San Antonio International Airport
  • Tyler Pounds Regional Airport
  • Waco Regional Airport
  • Wichita Falls Regional Airport

In other news, the DOJ lost its bid to delay the trial in its lawsuit to stop the merger. Many of the DOJ’s attorneys and staff were put on furlough due the government shutdown.

The “airline trial of the century” will proceed as scheduled in late November.
