Skymark Airlines to ground its Airbus A330s, will cut 15% of its flights as it reorganizes

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) announced today (January 29) it was filing for bankruptcy protection with the district court in Tokyo. The reorganizing airline announced it would eliminate 15 percent of its flights and ground its Airbus A330-300s on January 31 according to ZipanguFlyer.

Japan Airlines and S7 Airlines to expand their code share agreement

Japan Airlines (JAL) (Tokyo) and S7 Airlines (Novosibirsk), both members of oneworld®, have agreed to further expand the code share flights with adding 12 domestic destinations in Russia from March 19, 2014.

The new codeshare routes between Moscow (Domodedovo) and domestic cities in Russia includes Saint Petersburg, the second largest city in Russia, and also Sochi, which is the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as other attractive cities.

ANA and Garuda Indonesia move closer with a new partnership, both airlines will launch a Tokyo Haneda-Jakarta route

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) and Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) have announced a comprehensive partnership under which the two airlines will code share on flights between the two countries and will allow passengers to be able to collect and redeem miles on Frequent Flyer Program of both airlines.

From March 30, 2014, ANA will operate new route between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Jakarta Airport, followed by Garuda Indonesia opening the same route from the first quarter of 2014. These new flights will increase the number of weekly flights operated by the two carriers between Japan and Indonesia to 53 – comprising 14 ANA flights and 39 Garuda Indonesia flights. Both airlines will be providing improved and expanded customer service concurrent with this agreement and network expansion.

ANA and Garuda will allocate code share flight numbers to flights between Japan and Indonesia operated by each airline.
Passengers on ANA flights arriving in Jakarta will be able to travel on to maximum of 10 Indonesian routes such as Jogjakarta or Denpasar on code share flights operated by Garuda Indonesia while passengers on Garuda Indonesia flights arriving at Haneda Airport, Narita Airport or Kansai International Airport will be able to travel on to maximum of 11 Japanese routes such as Chitose or Nagoya using code share flights operated by ANA.

The two airlines will also start discussions on a partnership between their respective mileage programs. The details of joint mileage program, including the start date, will be announced separately on both companies’ websites when decided.

JAL to retire the last McDonnell Douglas DC-9-81 (MD-81) at the end of September

JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo) will be retiring the last McDonnell Douglas DC-9-81 (MD-81) (all ex-JAS) at the end of September. As a way of saying goodbye to the classic, JAL will conduct a “MD-81 Farewell Tour” on September 19-20. On the first day, the aircraft (registration is undecided at this time) will depart from Osaka (KIX) at 8:45 a.m. (0845), arriving at Oki (OKI) at 9:45 a.m. (0945). At Oki passengers will be able to walk around the tarmac to take photos of the aircraft. At 3 p.m. (1500), the airliner will leave Oki for Sapporo (CTS), arriving at 5 p.m. (1700). On the second day, the aircraft will leave CTS
at 7:45 a.m. (0745), arriving at OKI at 9:45 a.m. (0945). Passengers on the special flight will again be able to take photos, plus the aircraft will perform touch-and-go’s on this day. At 4:30 p.m. (1630) the airliner will leave OKI for KIX, arriving at 5:35 p.m. (1745). Tickets are being sold by JALTours.

In other retirement news, JAL quietly phased out its last three Boeing 767-200s. JA8231 was withdrawn from service in December 2009 and both JA8232 and JA8233 were withdrawn from scheduled service in March 2010 and became back-up equipment. JA8233 left the fleet on June 4, 2010 followed by JA8232 on June 11, 2010.

ANA to merge Air Central and Air Next into Air Nippon

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) has decided to move ahead with the merger of its subsidiaries. Air Central and Air Next will be merged into Air Nippon (Air Nippon Network Company) on October 1, 2010. Air Nippon in turn will be renamed ANA Wings (ANA Wings Company Limited) on October 1.

ANA considers a new low-cost subsidiary

ANA (All Nippon AIrways) (Tokyo) is considering establishing a new-cost subsidiary to operate both domestic and regional international routes. The new subsidiary would be based at Osaka (Kansai) if it decides to move forward with the project. The new subsidiary would operate under a different name and brand.

ANA orders five Bombardier Q400 turboprops

Bombardier Aerospace (Toronto) has confirmed that a firm order for five Q400 NextGen aircraft and options for another five, which was previously announced on August 3, 2009, was placed by All Nippon Airways Co. Ltd (ANA) (Tokyo).
