United Airlines to end New York JFK operations, will move its trans-con p.s. service to Newark

United Airlines (Chicago) is giving up on making a profit at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The carrier has just announced it will end all service on October 25 at JFK, where it failed to make a profit for the past seven years due to the lack of connections to other cities. United is moving it’s trans-continental p.s. service to its Newark Liberty International (EWR) hub. Delta is expected to acquire United’s JFK slots and United is expected to acquire some of Delta’s slots at Newark (subject to approvals).

The airline issued this statement:

United Airlines, the U.S. airline industry’s trans-continental leader, will bring the airline’s “p.s.” Premium Service to its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport in October. Beginning October 25, all regularly scheduled Newark-Los Angeles and Newark-San Francisco flights will offer:

flat-bed seats in the United BusinessFirst cabin;

premium in-flight service;

more extra-legroom Economy Plus seats than any other carrier; and

modern interiors with in-flight Wi-Fi and personal on-demand entertainment with

individual seatback monitors and power ports for customers in every row.

With the addition of p.s. service at Newark Liberty, United customers flying on trans-continental flights to and from Newark in the BusinessFirst cabin will, for the first time, enjoy flat-bed comfort for their entire journey when connecting to and from flights across United’s extensive trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific networks.

United will cement its role as the leader in trans-continental flying with more than 1,250 daily flat-bed seats – the most in the New York market – and a 44 percent increase in flat-bed seats year-over-year. The airline will fly up to 17 daily round trips Newark-San Francisco and up to 15 daily round trips Newark-Los Angeles, leading the industry with a total of up to 10,000 round-trip seats offered per day on the two combined key transcontinental routes.

Manhattan business travelers, particularly those who work on Wall Street and throughout lower and western Manhattan, enjoy easy access to Newark Liberty, the most convenient of the three New York-area airports.

With its launch of p.s. services at Newark Liberty, United will cease operations at Kennedy International Airport on October 25. United has entered into two separate transactions: Delta Air Lines plans to acquire United’s JFK slots, and United plans to acquire slots from Delta in Newark. Each transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

In launching p.s. service at Newark Liberty, United will move several Boeing 757-200 aircraft currently allocated to trans-Atlantic markets to p.s. flights. As it does so, the airline will increase the number of widebody Boeing 767 aircraft on trans-Atlantic flights, offering larger United BusinessFirst cabins and, on many flights, United Global First service.

United has already announced plans to introduce widebody Boeing 767 service on Newark flights to and from Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin and Hamburg.

United offers nearly 500 daily departures from the region to more than 150 destinations – the most in North America, the most across the Atlantic, the most across the Pacific and the most to and from Latin America.

JetBlue to expand its Mint service to Aruba and Barbados

JetBlue Airways (New York) announced plans to offer its Mint experience from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Barbados (BGI) and Aruba (AUA), two of its most popular Caribbean routes. The new seasonal service begins in November.

JetBlue launched its premium Mint service on transcontinental routes in June 2014.

JetBlue’s Mint experience to the islands will add a Caribbean twist to some customer favorites, including the tapas-style menu curated by New York City restaurant Saxon+Parole, organic desserts by Blue Marble Ice Cream, a sweet treat from Mah-ze-Dahr Bakery, and customized amenity kits from Birchbox.

Between November 7, 2015 and April 30, 2016, JetBlue will operate one roundtrip on Saturdays to each Caribbean location. And between December 19, 2015 and January 4, 2016 the airline will operate one roundtrip flight daily for the busy holiday travel season.

According to the airline, “JetBlue offers Mint on its new Airbus A321 aircraft. JetBlue Airways flight 1295 aborts its takeoff at New York JFK to avoid a taxiing Caribbean Airlines flight 526

JetBlue Airways (New York) flight 1295 from New York (JFK) to Austin, Texas with an Airbus A320 was ordered by FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC) to avoid its takeoff on runway 22 at JFK International Airport late Saturday night (January 17). The order was given to avoid a possible collision with a taxiing Caribbean Airlines flight 526 operated with a Boeing 737-800. According to this report, the Caribbean flight “taxied across” the JetBlue’s takeoff path. The two aircraft never came any closer than 2,800 feet. The JetBlue flight taxied back to the gate.

Delta Air Lines, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and JFK International Air Terminal unveil newest expansion at JFK’s Terminal 4

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta), the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and JFK International Air Terminal LLC (JFKIAT) have unveiled the next phase of a Terminal 4 expansion at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The $175 million project adds 11 gates and 75,000 square feet to Terminal 4’s Concourse B and continues Delta’s $1.2 billion investment to enhance and expand the terminal.

Through this latest investment, Delta is significantly enhancing the customer experience at Terminal 4 and Terminal 2 by relocating a majority of its Delta Connection flights at JFK from Terminal 2 to the expanded Concourse B in Terminal 4. This will streamline travel for those with connecting flights at JFK and enhance access to amenities at both terminals.

The new gates at Terminal 4 will feature enclosed jet bridges and offer customers proximity to a flagship Sky Club and chef-driven restaurants. The expansion also facilitates intra-terminal connections with the addition of a new JFK Jitney bus stop at the end of Concourse B in Terminal 4 near the new gates. This will complement the existing stops located by gate B18 at the base of Concourse B in Terminal 4 and by gate C60 at Terminal 2.

As a result of the expansion at Terminal 4, Delta customers at Terminal 2 will also enjoy an improved experience, as all Delta flights that will continue to operate there will use climate-controlled jet bridges. Customers will also have access to a renovated Sky Club, convenient iPad stations and a chef-driven food and beverage program featuring seven food and beverage concepts, fresh markets, coffee shops and concierge services. In Q2 2015, the Terminal 2 bus stop will be refreshed, with escalators and elevators installed.

The expanded Terminal 4—which JFKIAT has successfully operated for more than a decade—improves the customer experience for the 12 million passengers Delta serves at JFK annually. It also builds on Delta’s $1.2 billion redevelopment of Terminal 4, which opened in May 2013. That expansion featured nine new and seven renovated international gates; improved and renovated check-in areas, including a dedicated Sky Priority check-in area; a centralized security checkpoint; new dining and retail offerings; a new 24,000 square-foot flagship Delta Sky Club with the first-ever Sky Deck outdoor terrace; dual taxiways for less congestion and shorter taxi times; and improved Customs and Border Protection and baggage claim facilities.

Over the last six years, Delta has invested nearly $2 billion in New York City’s airports, leading the way in improving the traveler experience by bringing state-of-the-art technology, award-winning chefs and exceptional customer service to New York passengers.

JetBlue Airways today arrives in Curacao

JetBlue Airways (New York) today (December 2) launched twice-weekly flights to its latest Caribbean destination, Curaçao. The airline now offers up to 121 daily flights from the U.S. to the Caribbean, of which up to 56 daily flights are nonstop from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), with 26 routes from the two airports to the region. JetBlue offers more routes than any other airline from the U.S. to the Caribbean.

The twice-weekly service from JFK to Curaçao International Airport (CUR) operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays with an Airbus A320.

JetBlue Airways today opens the T5 International Arrivals hall at New York JFK

JetBlue Airways (New York) today (November 12) opened the long-awaited international arrivals hall extension to its world-class home at Terminal 5 (T5) at New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport. After a decade of international arrivals in New York, JetBlue will now bring Federal Inspection Services in-house. This will create a more seamless experience for customers traveling to and from JetBlue’s international network as one-third of the airline’s flying is outside the continental United States. Starting today, international customers will be able to depart and arrive under one roof, receiving the award-winning JetBlue Experience at all points along the way.

The airline continued;

“The customer-centric airline broke ground on the new international arrivals facility in 2012. To start, T5i will welcome JetBlue’s current schedule of up to 39 daily international arrivals from points including Barbados, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Curacao (beginning in December), Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Saint Lucia, St. Maarten, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turks & Caicos. International travelers will now arrive or transfer to other JetBlue flights all in one terminal.

The thoughtfully designed concourse extension, known as T5 International (T5i), perfectly complements T5’s existing environmentally-conscious space. T5i includes six international arrivals gates — three new and three converted from Terminal 5 — and an International Arrivals Hall with full Federal Inspection Services for customers arriving from international flights on JetBlue. T5 is the epitome of accessibility and convenience. With 29 total gates, the terminal still feels like home as the maximum distance to any gate from the TSA checkpoint is approximately five minutes.

Ease and convenience are at the heart of T5i. The international extension will be able to accommodate up to 1,400 customers per hour. It will also house 40 state-of-the-art automated passport control (APC) machines and 10 Global Entry kiosks designed to expedite travelers through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) process in a more timely and efficient manner.

T5i was designed with sustainable considerations including technologies that will help reduce the building’s environmental impact throughout its lifespan. Light, space and air are engrained in the overall infrastructure. The building also places an emphasis on health and wellness with an overall focus on indoor air quality. In spring 2015, T5i will reveal additional elements that will further enhance customer’s travel experiences including a post-security outdoor park, a dog walk overlooking the Manhattan skyline and more.

More than 50 business partners and contractors collaborated on this two-year project ensuring that the extension perfectly matches and enhances T5’s existing feel and sustainable stance. Project partners collaborated on all aspects including infrastructure and design to construction. Business partners included Gensler, Ammann & Whitney, Arup, AECOM, Gleeds USA and Turner Construction Company.

T5 was designed as JetBlue’s unique way to properly welcome people to New York. With this in mind, T5i will complement the existing terminal by greeting customers with one-of-a-kind amenities including an interactive Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education-focused children’s area (slated to debut later this year) and New York-centric concessions and restaurants including Bar Veloce — the first airport outpost of the East Village eatery; a New York Times bookstore; and New York Minute — a concept store that will offer locally produced products. This marks the first New York Minute location, a partnership with GrowNYC. The store’s offerings will include sundries sourced and grown in New York State.”

From JFK, JetBlue offers 150 daily nonstop flights daily to 65 destinations throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America and last year 11.8 million travelers passed through T5. JetBlue’s current home base of operations at Terminal 5 — the newest terminal at JFK — focuses on efficiency, customer convenience and comfort. Now 800,000-square-feet, the terminal currently boasts 29 gates distributed throughout three concourses, an international arrival extension and a 55,000-square-foot central retail and concession Marketplace.

JetBlue Airways celebrates its one millionth passenger to connect to its Fly-Fi system, will introduce its 10th reoccurring tail fin design: Tartan

JetBlue Airways (New York) is celebrating its one millionth customer to connect to its high-speed Fly-Fi system, also making JetBlue the first airline worldwide to connect one million personal electronic devices (PEDs) to true broadband Ka-based Wi-Fi service. To celebrate, the 140 customers onboard “CONNECTED TO 01000010 01001100 01010101 01000101,” JetBlue’s Fly-Fi livery aircraft (above), were rewarded with a total one million TrueBlue points on a flight from New York’s JFK International Airport to San Diego International Airport.

JetBlue launched Fly-Fi, the fastest Wi-Fi among all U.S. airlines, last December. Fly-Fi offers broadband speed via Ka-band satellite using satellite-to-aircraft connectivity rather than the ground-to-aircraft connectivity, or Ku-band, the many other U.S. carriers offer. Fly-Fi is currently available on 70 aircraft, with an additional 10-12 aircraft being Fly-Fi enabled each month. The entire JetBlue fleet will be Fly-Fi installed by the end of 2015. JetBlue is now the only airline in the world to offer free live television at every seat and free high-speed Wi-Fi. JetBlue was also the first U.S. airline to offer gate-to-gate use of personal electronic devices (PEDs), as of November 2013.

During fourth quarter 2015, JetBlue will launch a new Fly-Fi Portal, which will serve as a content hub where customers can access a wide range of movies, television shows and additional content from their own personal devices.

in other news, the company this week will introduce its 10th reoccurring tail design. Management has informed its employees it will introduce a new Gaelic-inspired “Tartan” tail fin design. The design is really an updated version of the retired “Plaid” design with new diagonal bold lines with a hint of green.

The first aircraft to be repainted in the new “Tartan” design is Airbus A320-232 N565JB (msn 2031).

JetBlue Airways:

JetBlue to launch a nonstop New York JFK-Curacao route on December 2

JetBlue Airways (New York) will launch a new route to Curaçao International Airport (CUR) from JFK International Airport (JFK) on December 2, 2014, providing the only nonstop service from New York. The twice weekly service will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Curaçao, which is part of the ABC islands that also includes Aruba and Bonaire, is considered a hidden gem amongst all Caribbean island destinations, renowned for its diving, beaches and unique architecture. The historic island is already a popular destination for European travelers and its capital, Willemsted, is a UNESCO World Heritage City.

JetBlue’s flights to Curaçao will be operated on a 150-seat Airbus A320.

American to offer two-class Airbus A321 service between Miami and Orlando

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) starting on October 2 will offer daily two-class Airbus A321 service between its Miami hub and Orlando per Airline Route.

JetBlue announces seasonal New York (JFK)-Hyannis flights starting on June 26

JetBlue Airways (New York) has announced Hyannis, Massachusetts as the 86th BlueCity. Hyannis/Cape Cod marks JetBlue’s 64th nonstop route from New York (JFK), where the airline will offer seasonal service with one daily flight between June 26 and September 9, 2014.

Hyannis, referred by many as the “Capital of the Cape,” is the largest of the seven villages in the city of Barnstable, Massachusetts, and the commercial and transportation hub of Cape Cod.

JetBlue’s new route will follow the schedule below:

JFK-HYA

Depart: 11:59 a.m. / Arrive 1:05 p.m.

HYA-JFK

Depart: 1:45 p.m. / 2:53 p.m.

In other news, JetBlue has announced an agreement to sell LiveTV to the Thales Group.

According to the carrier, “the relationship with LiveTV is not going away. Rather, this important customer relationship is expanding. JetBlue will continue to benefit from having access to current and future LiveTV IFE and connectivity products. Specifically, with the sale of LiveTV, we entered into two long-term agreements with LiveTV to continue and enhance both Fly-Fi connectivity and the IFE experience for Customers.”
