Los Cabos and La Paz, Mexico Airports damaged by Hurricane Odile

Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacรญfico, S.A.B. de C.V. (GAP), the operator of the airports at La Paz and Los Cabos in Baja, Mexico, has issued this statement late on September 15:

Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacรญfico, S.A.B. de C.V. (PAC) informs that operations at the Los Cabos and La Paz International Airports were suspended as of yesterday afternoon, September 14, 2014, as Hurricane Odile, a Category 3 storm, struck the area of Baja California.

Fernando Bosque, Chief Executive Officer of the Company, stated, โ€œOur main concern is the safety of our passengers and employees. As such, we are fully cooperating with the state and federal authorities to ensure that are precautions are taken. Flights have been suspended since yesterday afternoon; at this time we are not fully aware of the extent of the damage to the operations and will keep the community posted as information becomes available. Our goal is to resume normal operations as soon as is possible.โ€

The Company is currently in the process of surveying the airports in order to determine the extent of the damage. Once additional information is available, GAP will be issuing an updated press release.

Activities at GAPโ€™s 10 other airports are operating normally.

Several small aircraft are believed to have been destroyed.

Southwest Airlines launches Mexican flights to Cancun and San Jose del Cabo/Los Cabos

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) launched its initial service to Mexico with inaugural flights over the weekend. ย The nonstop routes previously served by wholly owned subsidiary AirTran Airways now operate daily between Orange County/Santa Ana and San Jose del Cabo/Los Cabos, Mexico, and between Cancun and both Atlanta and Baltimore/Washington.

Saturday-only service on Southwest between Milwaukee and Cancun begins August 16, 2014.

The Company plans to fully convert all international and domestic service currently flown by AirTran to Southwest by the end of this year. The carriers’ flights schedules are published through March 6, 2015, and are available for purchase at southwest.com.

AirTran Airways continues to operate daily service between Mexico City and Orange County/Santa Ana until the route converts to Southwest Airlines service on Nov. 2, 2014.

Southwest Airlines began international service on July 1 with flights to Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Nassau, The Bahamas, in the Caribbean. International service from Denver begins Oct. 7. Additional international service from Chicago (Midway), Austin, and San Antonio begins Nov. 2, the same day Southwest Airlines begins serving Punta Cana, Dominican Republic*, and Mexico City.

United to operate seasonal Washington Dulles-Los Cabos weekly flights, will launch two new Express routes from Newark

United Airlines (Chicago) will launch a weekly and seasonal route from the Washington (Dulles) hub to Los Cabos (Baja), Mexico from December 20 through May 2, 2015. The route will be operated on Saturdays with Boeing 737-700 aircraft per Airline Route.

The company is also starting two new daily United Express routes from the Newark hub starting on October 26; to London, Ontario and South Bend, Indiana. Both routes will be operated with Embraer ERJ 145 regional jets.

Delta to operate seasonal San Diego-Los Cabos flights

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will operate a seasonal Mexican route from San Diego to Los Cabos in the Baja Peninsula from December 20, 2014 through April 6, 2015. The route will be operated with Airbus A319 aircraft per Airline Route.

Delta to start again the Dallas/Fort Worth-Los Angeles route on November 3

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will re-institute Dallas/Fort Worth-Los Angeles service on November 3. The restored route will be operated as a Delta Connection route with Embraer 175s according to Airline Route.

In addition, Delta continues to add feeder and long-range routes to the Seattle/Tacoma market in addition to what has already been reported. According to Airline Route, the carrier will add three new routes on December 20 adding further competition to Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma): Bozeman, Montana (ERJ 175), Kahului, Maui, Hawaii (757) and Los Cabos, Mexico (A319).

AeroMexico adds a fourth daily seasonal flight from Mexico City to Miami

AeroMexicoย (Mexico City) has announced the launch of its fourth daily seasonal flight betweenย Miamiย andย Mexico Cityย as ofย April 11.

All four daily flights will be operated with Boeing 737-700 aircraft configured with 124 seats, including 12 seats in AeroMexico’s Clase Premier front cabin, and will depart from Terminal H at theย Miamiย International Airport. Southwest to serve Cancun and Los Cabos starting on August 10

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has announced the next phase of its international service by offering Customers new Southwest Airlines flights to both the Pacific andย Caribbean coasts ofย Mexico, as well as other new domestic and international flying, as the carrier extended flight schedules throughย October 31, 2014.

Beginningย August 10, 2014, Southwest Airlines will operate daily, nonstop flights between:

  • Cancun, Mexico,ย andย Atlanta,ย Baltimore/Washington, and (Saturdays only)ย Milwaukee
  • San Joseย del Cabo/Los Cabos, Mexico,ย andย Santa Ana/Orange County
  • Nassau, Bahamas,ย and (Saturdays only)ย Atlanta

As the planned conversion of wholly owned subsidiary AirTran Airways’ destinations continues, Southwest intends to serve five countries previously served by AirTran by the end of this year. ย Southwestย previously announcedย service toย Aruba,ย Nassau, andย Montego Bay, beginning on July 1, 2014, and throughout this booking window is adding domestic connectivity through international gateway cities to many of the more than 80 cities served by Southwest Airlines across the United States.

Southwest’s phased rollout of international nonstop with domestic connecting service also brings new options for Denver customers who have made Southwest Airlines the largest air carrier inย Colorado.

Beginning inย October 2014, Southwest Airlines will offer nonstop service betweenย Denverย and:

  • Cancun, with daily roundtrip flights beginning on October 7, 2014; and
  • San Joseย del Cabo/Los Cabos, with Saturday-only service beginning on October 11, 2014

Some flights will be operated by AirTran Airways which is being slowly integrated into Southwest Airlines.

Spirit announces new routes to Mexico and Philadelphia

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) has announced schedules for new service to/from Los Cabos and Cancun, Mexico starting on November 8, 2012.

The new service includes one daily nonstop service between Los Cabos, Mexico (serving Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) and San Diego, with connecting service to Dallas/Fort Worth.

In addition, four weekly nonstop flights between Los Cabos, Mexico and Dallas/Fort Worth start on June 13, 2013.

Three weekly nonstop flights between Cancun, Mexico and Dallas/Fort Worth start on April 25, 2013, with service increasing to daily on June 13, 2013.

The company is also launching nonstop Dallas/Fort Worth-Philadelphia (four days a week) service on April 26, 2013 as it builds up its DFW hub.
