Atlas Air to operate two new Boeing 747-800F freighters for DHL Express

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (New York-JFK) has announced that it has reached an agreement with DHL Express for placement of its sixth and seventh Boeing 747-8 Freighter aircraft.

These aircraft will be operated by Atlas Air Worldwideโ€™s unit, Atlas Air, Inc., (New York-JFK) in the Polar Air Cargo Worldwide express network under an ACMI arrangement for the benefit of DHL Express commencing in the fourth quarter of 2012. These aircraft will be the first of their type to be flown for DHL Express and will operate in DHLโ€™s Asian and trans-Pacific markets. These aircraft will replace two Boeing 747-400F Freighters that are currently in service for DHL Express and currently operated by Polar Air Cargo (above).

Atlas Air expects to receive an additional two 747-8Fs in the first half of 2013, for a total of nine aircraft, completing the delivery of its order program.

Delta to start nonstop New York-Vancouver service

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will start daily, nonstop service between its New York (JFK) hub and Vancouver, British Columbia starting on June 6, 2013. The new route will be operated with Boeing 737-800s according to Airline Route.

Qatar Airways is coming to Chicago

Qatar Airways (Doha) hasย announced an expansion of its USA route networkย with the introduction of daily passenger flights to Chicago (O’Hare) from April 10, 2013.

The nonstop service from Doha, capital of the State of Qatar, will beย Qatar Airways’ fourth USA gateway, following its daily operations to New York (JFK), Washington (IAD) and Houston (IAH).

The carrier, which already operates twice-weekly cargo flights to Chicago O’Hare, will use its flagship long-haul Boeing 777-300 ER (Extended Range) passenger aircraft on the Doha โ€“ Chicago route with an approximate flying time of 15 hours.

American’s CEO Tom Horton meets with creditors after the pilots reject the new contract

American Airlines‘ (Dallas/Fort Worth) CEO Tom Horton, according to this report by Reuters, meet yesterday with the creditors to update the creditors on its labor negotiations and also discuss the next steps after the pilots resoundingly rejected the new contract, seen by many as a rejection of the curent management and plans. The meeting also discussed AA’s recent financial and operational performance.

American is also close to a merger decision.

In other news, American is planning to drop the current New York (JFK)-Brussels route after November 5 citing poor performance. The route is currently operated with 187-seat Boeing 757-200s.

Atlas Air celebrates its 20th Anniversary of its founding

Atlas Air (New York-JFK) yesterday (August 6) celebrated its 20thย anniversary of the founding of the cargo company.

According to the company, “Our companyโ€™s founder, Michael Chowdry, named โ€œAtlas Airโ€ after a 45-foot statue of the Greek titan Atlas in Rockefeller Center, New York City.”

Atlas Air now has the largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighters and is the only ACMI operator with the next-generation 747-8F.

Financially, the Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings holding group has had 17 consecutive profitable quarters.

Today the company has it headquarters in Purchase, New York with a training center in Miami, sales offices in Latin America, London, Dubai and Hong Kong and operations centers in Anchorage, Houston and numerous locations around the world.

The first revenue flight was operated on February 11, 1993, with a Boeing 747-200 freighter operating for China Airlines (Taipei) from New York (JFK) to Taipei via Anchorage, Alaska.

The company has developed a special 20th Anniversary logo which is likely to be added to the aircraft.

Interjet arrives today in New York

Interjet (Mexico City) today (August 2) launched its first service from New York (JFK) to Mexico City. The daily flights add a third gateway city in the United States for Interjet, which already operates out of Miami and San Antonio.

New York represents the airline’s sixth international destination. In addition to the three U.S. cities, Interjet flies to Guatemala, Havana, and San Jose, Costa Rica.

The JFK service departs from New York at 7:25 am (0725) Monday through Friday and 10 am (1000) on Saturday and Sunday. Return flights leave Mexico City at 4:40 pm (1640), arriving at JFK at 10:30 pm (2230).

American adds new flights to Brazil

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) will launch 17 additional frequencies between the United States and Brazil beginning this fall.

Beginning October 1, American will launch a second daily flight between New York’s Kennedy Airport and Sao Paulo. On November 15, American will convert its daily Miami to Salvador flight, with continuing service to Recife, from one-stop service to nonstop service five days per week between Miami and both Recife and Salvador. American will also increase its current one daily nonstop flight between Miami and Rio de Janeiro to two daily nonstops on December 15.

In June, American increased weekly flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and Sao Paulo from seven times per week to 12 times per week and increased flights from Miami to Brasilia and Belo Horizonte from five and three times per week, respectively, to daily. American also launched new service between its Miami hub and Manaus, its seventh destination in Brazil, on June 14.

With the most service between North America and Brazil, American serves Brazil from Miami to Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Manaus, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Sao Paulo; from New York โ€“ Kennedy to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo; and from Dallas/Fort Worth to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. In total, American offers nearly 800 weekly flights to more than 40 cities throughout Latin America, including Mexico, Central and South America.

In addition, the Dallas/Fort Worth โ€“ Sao Paulo flight will be the first to feature the newest addition to American’s fleet, the Boeing 777-300 ER, this December.
