TAM Airlines firms up order for 20 Airbus A320 Family aircraft and five A350-900s

TAM Airlines (TAM Linhas Aereas) (Sao Paulo) has signed a firm order for 25 Airbus aircraft, bringing the Brazilian airline’s total Airbus order book to 176. This order for 20 A320 Family aircraft and five A350-900s follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) announced at ILA Berlin Air Show in June.

TAM’s new A320 Family aircraft will replace existing A320 Family aircraft as part of the airline’s commitment to keep an average fleet age of six years.

As of today, TAM’s total Airbus orders have increased to 134 A320 Family aircraft, 15 A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB. 65 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, two A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB are still in the backlog.

VARIG to fly to St. Maarten

GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (Sao Paulo) will begin flying to Saint Maarten (Netherlands Antilles) in the Caribbean as of June 12. These flights, initially under the charter system, will take place on Saturdays under the VARIG brand, although the company has already applied for authorization from the authorities to operate regular flights.

The flights will leave Sao Paulo International Airport/Guarulhos at 2:48 p.m. (1448) on Saturdays, with a stopover in Manaus, from where they will depart for Saint Maarten at 6:10 p.m. (1810), arriving at 9:30 p.m. (2130). The return flight will depart from Saint Maarten at 11:30 p.m. (2330), arriving in Manaus at 2:50 a.m. (0250) and in Guarulhos at 8:35 a.m. (0835) on Sundays.

TAM signs MOU for 20 A320 Family aircraft and five A350-900s

TAM Airlines (TAM Linhas Aereas) (Sao Paulo), Airbus’ biggest customer in the southern hemisphere and Brazil’s largest airline company, announced an order for 20 new Airbus A320 Family and five A350-900 aircraft, bringing the Brazilian airline’s total Airbus orders to 176 aircraft, including 134 A320 Family, 15 A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB aircraft. The Memorandum of Understanding outlining the order was signed during the ILA Air Show in Berlin.

The new A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce engines. TAM is yet to select engines for the new 20 A320 Family aircraft. The airline currently operates its existing fleet of A320 Family with both CFM and IAE engines.

TAM’s incremental A320 Family aircraft order will, in accordance with the airline’s fleet plan, replace existing A320 Family aircraft as part of their commitment to keep an average fleet age of six years. Both the A320 Family and A350 XWBs fleet will serve the carrier’s existing routes.

GOL announces IATA membership

GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes S.A. (Sao Paulo), the parent of GOL Transportes Aereas and VARIG (2nd) (VRG Linhas Aereas), announced yesterday (June 2) that it has joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as an active meber. IATA is an international trade body, representing approximately 230 airlines, comprising 93% of scheduled international air traffic.

VARIG to fly to Barbados

GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes S.A. (NYSE:GOL – News), the parent of both Gol Transportes Aereos and VARIG (2nd) (VRG Linhas Aereas), has received approval to start regular flights between Brazil and Barbados, in the Caribbean. Flights will begin on June 26 and will take place once a week, on Saturdays, under the VARIG brand.

The new flight will leave Sao Paulo International Airport/Guarulhos at 4:35 p.m. (local time) (1635) on Saturdays, arriving in Bridgetown, Barbados, at 9:15 p.m. (local time) (2115). The return flight will leave Bridgetown at 10:00 p.m. (local time) (2200), arriving in Brazil at 4:35 a.m. (local time) (0435) on Sundays.

Delta Air Lines to start Detroit-Sao Paulo service on October 21

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) announced it has received approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate twice-weekly service between its Detroit Metropolitan Airport hub and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The new service, which will begin Oct. 21, 2010.

Delta will operate the flights using 216-seat Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with 35 seats in BusinessElite and 181 seats in Economy Class.

El Al Israel Airlines cancels its order for four Boeing 777s

VARIG to add Aruba on October 4

VARIG (2nd) (VRG Linhas Aereas) (subsidiary of Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes) (Sao Paulo) will add Aruba and the Sao Paulo (Guarulhos)-Aruba route via Caracas each Sunday effective October 4. The new route will be flown with Boeing 737-800s.

AeroSur adds its first Boeing 737-300

AeroSur (Bolivia) (Santa Cruz) added its first Boeing 737-300 in August in a dramatic way. The new type is painted in this special “Yacare” (alligator) color scheme and was introduced on September 3.
