Bombardier CS100 is awarded a type certificate by Transport Canada

Bombardier CS100 C-FFCO (50006)(Grd) YMX (Bombardier)(LRW)

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft (Montreal) announced yesterday (December 18) that its all-new CS100 aircraft received its Transport Canada Type Certification following a comprehensive and rigorous testing program, which included more than 3,000 flight test hours, the validation of thousands of test results and the authentication of extensive design and performance data. Obtaining the Type Certificate for the CS100 aircraft paves the way for the delivery and entry into service of the CS100 aircraft with first operator SWISS in Q2 2016.

Design Approval Designees (DADs), engineers authorized to act on behalf of the Minister of Transport to approve aeronautical design and make findings of compliance, worked closely with Transport Canada over the last five years planning, testing, and reviewing thousands of technical drawings and documents that ultimately define the C Series aircraft and allow it to be built against this design definition. Once Bombardier demonstrated that the C Series aircraft design fully complied with the safety requirements mandated by Transport Canada, the aircraft was issued its Type Certificate.

Bombardierโ€™s CS300 aircraft, the larger model, is on track to obtain its Type Certificate within the next six months as planned. Bombardier will continue to work with Transport Canada to validate the CS100 aircraftโ€™s training syllabus.

The CS100 and CS300 aircraft have over 95 per cent parts commonality, as well as the same type rating. The groundbreaking Pratt & Whitney PurePowerยฎ PW1500G engine, combined with advanced aerodynamics, delivers reduced fuel burn, noise and emissions, increasing the aircraftโ€™s environmental and social compatibility.

Bombardier has booked orders and commitments for 603 C Series aircraft, which include firm orders for 243.

Finnair to add additional seats to its Airbus narrow body fleet

Finnair (Helsinki) has announced this plan to add extra seats to its Airbus narrow body fleet:

Finnair logo

Due to a growing need for feeder traffic capacity, Finnair has decided to improve the space efficiency of its current Airbus narrow-body fleet, operating mainly on its European routes. According to the plan, seats will be added to the aircraft primarily without changing the leg space available to the passenger, so as to preserve travel comfort. Space efficiency will be improved by modifying storage and technical space at the front and rear of the aircraft.

The value of the investment is approximately EUR 40 million, and it includes 22 narrow-body Airbus aircraft in Finnairโ€™s fleet. The cabin layout change excludes five A321ER aircraft, which are already configured according to the plan, having 209 seats. The cabin reconfiguration is estimated to take two weeks per aircraft during 2017. The reconfiguration adds 6 to 13 seats depending on the aircraft type, increasing the passenger capacity of Finnairโ€™s Airbus narrow-body fleet as measured by available seat kilometers by close to 4 percent.

Finnair has previously stated it needs more European feeder traffic capacity with a view to the growth of its long-haul capacity. The additional capacity will be acquired mainly by increasing the average size of its narrow-body aircraft over the next few years.

Embraer announced that it delivered the first two E195 jets to Tianjin Airlines (Tianjin, China), the launch customer of this aircraft model in China. These two aircraft are part of the sales agreement Tianjin Airlines signed with Embraer in 2014 for 20 E195 and 20 E190 E2 jets, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Brazil.

Currently, Tianjin Airlines operates the largest Embraer E190 fleet (45 aircraft) in China, mainly serving secondary trunk lines and regional lines.

Du Xiaoping, President of Tianjin Airlines, said the incoming E195 fleet will play a strategic role to the company’s development. “We are very satisfied with the current E190 fleet we are operating and we believe the new E195 fleet, with more seats and equally excellent operational economics, will allow us to meet the surging demands of air travel in China and help achieve our development goals.”

To date, Embraer Commercial Aviation has achieved an 80% share of the Chinese regional aviation market. Currently, Embraer has 224 firm orders in China, including 188 firm order (21 aircraft are pending government approval) for commercial jets, 130 of which have been delivered.

Three U.S. airlines to apply for Cuban scheduled authority

The United States and Cuba have agreed to restore regularly scheduled airline services with a new bilateral agreement. American Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines have already stated they will seek service rights to serve Havana and other cities on the island. Charter flights will continue for now and there was no timeline given for regularly scheduled flights.

This will also mean the return of Cubana (Havana) to the USA.

In the past, when there was a bilateral agreement, Cubana along with Pan Am, National Airlines and Delta Air Lines previously flew between the two countries.

American Airlines issued this statement:

American Airlines 2013 logo

American Airlines issued the following statement on the United States and Cuba reaching an arrangement that will permit scheduled air service between the two countries for the first time in more than 50 years.

“Today’s announcement is great news for our customers as it brings us one step closer to connecting the U.S. and Cuba with scheduled air service,” said American’s chairman and CEO Doug Parker. “As the leading carrier to the Caribbean and the leading U.S. airline to Cuba, we look forward to establishing scheduled service to Cuba in 2016, from Miami and other American hubs. We appreciate the Administration’s efforts and the hard work of the U.S. negotiators to reach this arrangement.”

Charter Service to Cuba

American has operated charter service to Cuba since 1991 with flights from Miami, Tampa and Los Angeles to five Cuban destinations: Camaguey (CMW), Cienfuegos (CFG), Havana (HAV), Holguin (HOG) and Santa Clara (SNU). American has been the leader in the U.S. to Cuba market for nearly 25 years. This year, American will operate approximately 1,200 charter flights to Cuba, more than any other U.S. carrier and a 9 percent increase from 2014.

On December 12, American expanded its reach to Cuba with the launch of new charter service, offering customers travel options between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Jose Marti International Airport (HAV) in Havana, and providing the only nonstop service between the West Coast of the U.S. and Cuba.

Next Steps

As a result of today’s announcement, American expects to submit a U.S.-Cuba service proposal to the U.S. Department of Transportation and hopes for timely approval of its proposal to enable American to introduce scheduled service as soon as possible in 2016.

JetBlue Airways issued this statement:

JetBlue logo-2

JetBlue applauded a landmark civil aviation agreement that will allow scheduled air service to resume between the U.S. and Cuba.

JetBlue will submit its application for new routes to the U.S. Department of Transportation once the airline has fully reviewed terms of the agreement and has clarity on the process and timing of assigning frequencies to U.S. airlines.

Depending on the number of flight frequencies available to the airline, JetBlue is eager to offer affordable service from numerous U.S. cities to multiple destinations in Cuba.

“We hope the next dot on our Caribbean route map will be Havana, and possibly even other destinations in Cuba,” Laurence said. “Cuba is the perfect addition to the JetBlue network. Over the last several years, we have become a leader in the Caribbean with our position as the largest airline in markets like Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic and an expanding presence across the region.”

JetBlue first began operating charters to Cuba in 2011 and now flies to Havana and Santa Clara from New York, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, and Tampa. JetBlue plans to continue operating charter flights with its partners as the process of assigning frequencies for scheduled service flights proceeds.

United Airlines issued this statement:

United logo-1

United Airlines issued the following statement after the U.S. and Cuban governments agreed to reinstitute scheduled air service between the two nations.

“United Airlines congratulates the U.S. and Cuban governments on reaching this historic arrangement, which will strengthen ties and economic development between the two countries. We look forward to offering service between our global gateways and Cuba as soon as we have approval to do so.”
