Six new routes from Moscow will be introduced: to Cairo, Burgas, Naples, Verona, Kyzylorda, Saransk.

The Russian flag carrierโ€™s route network covers 52 routes within Russia, 16 points in seven other CIS countries and 78 other international destinations (55 to Europe, 13 to Asia, five to America, four to the Middle East and one to Africa).

The main news regarding international flights is the resumption of regular flights to Egypt. From April 11, Aeroflot will re-open the Moscow-Cairo route. Flights are scheduled three times per week on Airbus A320 aircraft. From June 12 to July 2 this will increase to daily flights to respond to high demand.

Allegiant celebrates flying 1,000 Wish Kids through partnership with Make-A-Wishยฎ

Allegiant Travel Company (Allegiant Air) this week celebrated its 1,000th wish flight as a Make-A-Wish travel partner, bringing four year-old Nicolas Dones IV (known by his nickname, “Cuatro”) from McAllen, Texas to Las Vegas on March 21 for Monster Jam World Finals XIX. This wish kid, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014, was celebrated with surprises on both ends of his flight, as well as in the air.

Above Photo: Allegiant Air.ย Wish kid Cuatro and Captain Joshua Rockwood in the flight deck of the Airbus A319.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant became a charitable partner with Make-A-Wish in 2012. Since then, the company has donated nearly two million dollars in complementary airfare to send wish kids and their families on wish trips. To commemorate the 1,000th wish milestone, Allegiant surprised passengers on board Cuatro’s flight by announcing that all proceeds from ticket sales would be donated to Make-A-Wish โ€“ to pay it forward and provide funds toward the next wish.

Cuatro’s wish journey began at McAllen Miller International Airport (MFE) with a special send-off celebration, including a monster truck-themed cake, as well as treats donated by Chick-Fil-A โ€“ his favorite restaurant. Upon arrival in Las Vegas, Cuatro rode from the gate through the airport in style โ€“ on a battery-powered, ride-on replica of his favorite monster truck, Grave Digger. Dozens of Allegiant employees greeted Cuatro and his family at baggage claim with full fanfare โ€“ a warm welcome from Las Vegas’ hometown airline.

In addition to providing support for Make-A-Wish by donating travel, Allegiant also gets passengers involved through the sale of “Wingz Kid Snack Packs” on board each flight โ€“ one dollar from each snack pack sold goes directly to Make-A-Wish. In addition, Allegiant in 2017 donated office space to Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada, making the company’sย Las Vegasย headquarters the new home of the nonprofit organization’s local chapter at a rent of $1 per year.

Permission to fly: Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics is granted the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC)

The new Spanish airline plans a start of flight operations this week.

Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics (TCAB) on March 20 was granted an AOC. This means that the new Spanish airline can formally operate as an airline. The AOC comes following months of preparatory work. The new Spanish airline will start flight operations on Saturday, March 24, according to current plans.

The new airline, Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics, is part of Thomas Cook Group Airlines’ growth plans, giving it a new base in its most popular destination from which it can provide flights to support its other airlines, according to seasonal demand. To ensure full integration the Board of Directors includes members of the senior team from Thomas Cook Group Airlines and is chaired by Paul Hutchings, Group Director of Flight Operations. Accountable Manager of Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics is Juan Manuel Gallego.

The new airline will commence operations with five Airbus A320 aircraft during summer 2018. These aircraft will initially take over short and medium-haul flights for Thomas Cook’s German airline Condor to replace third party aircraft leases.

This announcement of the new AOC follows the recent announcement of the granted AOC for Thomas Cook Aviation, the other new airline of Thomas Cook Group Airline, based in Germany, following the collapse of Air Berlin.

Brussels Airlines reviews its positive 2017 financial results

Brussels Airlines Airbus A320-214 OO-SNH (msn 2207) LHR (SPA). Image: 937527.

For Brussels Airlines, 2017 wasย marked by positive financial results in a highly competitive environment and strategic investment for the future.

  • Operating profit (EBIT) of โ‚ฌ14.98 million in 2017 (IFRS standard)
  • Net result of โ‚ฌ3.57 million (IFRS)
  • Continued highly competitive environment which, in combination with a strong capacity increase linked to fleet alignment (+11%), led to important yield pressure
  • Market share increased by 1.4 p.p. (+ 1.3 million passengers)
  • 9.1 million passengers (+17.3%) leading to a record seat load factor of 78.8% (+4.1 p.p.)
  • Key strategic projects implemented, weighing on 2017 results, but creating new sources of profit (Thomas Cook/launch of Mumbai/Toronto)
  • Excluding one-time costs of strategic investments, the operating result amounts to โ‚ฌ25 million
  • โ‚ฌ1.326 billion revenues and a cash position (โ‚ฌ204 million) that remains very solid, despite the reimbursement of โ‚ฌ16.8 million of airport security subsidies following negative decision by European Commission. The additional 2 years of subsidies which were expected to be received have been cancelled, which will negatively impact the BGAAP net result (exceptional one-time effect)
  • Brussels Airlines hired 645 new staff members (including 160 crew members of Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium)
In 2017, despite a challenging market environment, Brussels Airlines continued on its growth path of the last years, booking a positive result for the 3rd consecutive year. ย Brussels Airlinesโ€™ seat capacity increased by 11% versus 2016, especially on the European network, following the phase-out of the AVRO RJ100 fleet (100 seater) and its partial replacement by bigger Airbus A319/320 (140/180 seats). The increased capacity on the long-haul sector was realized thanks to the addition of an Airbus A330, which was mainly deployed on the new Mumbai route.

The additional seats have resulted in a 17.3% passenger increase, allowing Brussels Airlines to pass the 9 million passenger mark for the first time in its history (one million above the original 2018 ambition) and leading to a seat load factor of 78.8% (+4.1 p.p. and only 1.8 p.p. under the 2018 ambition), also a record for Brussels Airlines.

An overall growing network and strategic investments fueling the future of Brussels Airlines

The European network – The integration in Belgium of the Thomas Cook Airlines activities and two of its Airbus A320 aircraft, allowed Brussels Airlines to reinforce its position in the important leisure segment. The closer cooperation with tour operator Thomas Cook Belgium allowed Brussels Airlines to add 26 new destinations to its existing leisure network and to further improve its productivity. The integration will increase Brussels Airlinesโ€™ customer base by a further one million guests, contributing substantially to the profitability of the highly competitive European network.

By increasing the seat capacity on the European network and, as a consequence, growing the passenger numbers, Brussels Airlines was able to increase its market share. This created an important pressure on the yield, however, which was further reinforced by the capacity increase related to the fleet alignment towards the A320 family in a market that was still in a recovery phase after the March 22nd terrorist attack, impacting the profitability in the early months of 2017. As a consequence, the full profit effect of the up-gauge from Avro to Airbus will hence only by visible as of 2018, as already visible in the financial results of the two first months of 2018.

The African continent – With a very strong performance, despite some political crises, Africa remained the strong-hold of Brussels Airlines in 2017. For the first time ever, the airline surpassed the one million passenger mark on the African network, corresponding to an increase of 14.0% and resulting in an average seat load factor of 87%, a record for Brussels Airlines. Brussels remains a real hub for African passengers, with 65% of passengers connecting to a Brussels Airlines destination in Europe or the US. The Cargo activities of the airline contributed to the positive results on Africa.

US and Canada – On the North Atlantic sector, Brussels Airlines focused on the performance ย of its three destinations New York, Washington and Toronto. During the first semester of 2017, the traffic from the US to Belgium still suffered from the terror level 3, impacting travel from the US to and via Belgium. Itโ€™s only in the second semester that the traffic started to recover. Overall passenger number grew by 13.7%.

Brussels Airlines expects a further improvement of the North Atlantic performance thanks to the recently signed sales agreement with the Lufthansa Group.

Newcomer India – Launched in April last year, Brussels Airlinesโ€™ first Asian destination Mumbai reached an average seat load factor of 75% and financials are in line with the business plan. India is an important economic partner for Belgium with, at the same time, a substantial leisure potential.

A good start of 2018

The first two months of this year show a positive trend in terms of passenger volumes and revenues โ€“ even though the pressure on the yield remains very high. With a passenger growth of 15% and 16.5% in respectively January and February, Brussels Airlines could further reinforce its market position. The overall costs per seat are also lower than during the same period last year โ€“ especially thanks to the first results of the investments done in 2017.

Partnerships, the perfectly-balanced equation for even more destinations

In order to offer its customers the most extensive network and the best connecting opportunities on all continents, Air France-KLM is actively pursuing its policy of strengthening its existing alliances and exploring new partnerships.

For the 2018 summer season, the group will offer a wider choice of destinations and connections for customers travelling between India and Europe via Paris and Amsterdam thanks to the enhanced cooperation agreement recently signed with Jet Airways.

The joint venture between Air France-KLM, Alitalia and Delta Air Lines provides customers with access to more than 270 destinations beyond 27 North American cities and offers more than 215 destinations beyond the 28 European gateways.

To maintain its position as European leader in terms of capacity from Europe to China, Air France-KLM will continue its strategic joint venture with China Eastern from the main hubs at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Shanghai, while maintaining its joint venture agreements with China Southern and Xiamen Airlines on 5 services from Paris and Amsterdam to Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing and Xiamen.

Air France will offer the new Paris-Charles de Gaulle – Taipei route in cooperation with China Airlines, a member of Skyteam, with a codeshare agreement on this route, as well as destinations beyond the two hubs.

Air France and Vietnam Airlines, also a SkyTeam member, have signed a new joint-venture which has been in force since November 1, 2017. In this way, customers will benefit from a combined offer as well as improved and enhanced connections between the buoyant market of Vietnam and Europe.

With its partner GOL Linhas Aรฉreas Inteligentes, customers of the Air France-KLM group will benefit from 50 Brazilian destinations, now available from three gateways in Brazil; Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Fortaleza.

The already-existing partnership between KLM and Kenya Airways provides customers with access to a vast network to East Africa and several connecting opportunities from Nairobi. The launch by Air France of the Paris-Charles de Gaulle โ€“ Nairobi route and the integration of the airline in the joint-venture with KLM and Kenya Airways considerably increases the Air France-KLM groupโ€™s capacity in East Africa.

Moreover, with KLMโ€™s integration in the joint-venture between Air France and Air Mauritius, KLM and Air Mauritius will share a coordinated flight schedule throughout the year on the Amsterdam-Mauritius route.
