Air Canada announces new rouge European destinations + Casablanca

Air Canada (Montreal) has announced one of its most far-reaching summer schedule expansions ever with its first route to Africa and the addition of four major European cities to its global network. The new Air Canada rouge service to Casablanca, Morocco , means Air Canada will be one of only a dozen airlines in the world that serve six continents.

“Air Canada is solidifying its position among leading global carriers by becoming one of only a dozen airlines flying to six continents with today’s announcement of non-stop service to Casablanca, our first destination in Africa. Our Montreal – Casablanca flight will also be the only service to North Africa by a North American carrier and our aim is to transform this new route into a year-round operation. Our new, nonstop Air Canada rouge routes to Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, and Glasgow from Toronto Pearson are equally important as we continue to build out our network from our global gateway hub with more international destinations. The European services will be complemented by our Star Alliance partners, giving customers an even wider choice of travel options,” said Benjamin Smith , President, Passenger Airlines at Air Canada.

All the new services will be operated by Air Canada rouge (Toronto), Air Canada’s leisure carrier. All flights will be flown using a 280-seat Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft offering a choice of premium and economy cabins. Customers will have the ability to collect and redeem Aeroplan miles. Seats are now available for purchase. To promote these new nonstop routes, Air Canada is offering a special introductory fare starting as low as CAD$869 roundtrip, all-in for travel before July 2016 .

Route Details:

Toronto – Prague : service begins May 29, 2016 with flight AC1922 and operates three times weekly. Departs Toronto at 16:55 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving in Prague at 7:20 the next day. Return flight AC1923 departs Prague at 9:30 and arrives in Toronto 12:40 on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Service ends for the season on September 29, 2016.

Montreal – Casablanca : service begins June 3, 2016 with flight AC1936 and operates four times weekly, subject to obtaining the necessary government approvals. Departs Montreal at 21:40 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving in Casablanca at 10:00 the next day. Return flight AC1937 departs Casablanca at 11:55 and arrives in Montreal at 14:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Service ends for the season on October 17, 2016 .

Toronto – Budapest : service begins June 10, 2016 with flight AC1910 and operates three times weekly. Departs Toronto at 22:35 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, arriving in Budapest 13:35 the next day. Return flight AC1911 departs Budapest at 15:05 and arrives in Toronto at 18:45 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Service ends for the season on October 15, 2016 .

Toronto – Glasgow : service begins June 13, 2016 with flight AC1938 and operates three times weekly. Departs Toronto at 18:55 on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, arriving in Glasgow at 6:40 the next day. Return flight AC1939 departs Glasgow at 8:25 and arrives in Toronto 10:50 on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Service ends for the season on September 25, 2016 .

Toronto – Warsaw : service begins June 16, 2016 with flight AC1926 and operates three times weekly. Departs Toronto at 18:30 on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, arriving in Warsaw at 9:30 the next day. Return flight AC1927 departs Warsaw at 11:00 and arrives Toronto 14:50 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Service ends for the season on September 30, 2016 .

Since 2009, Air Canada has increased its system-wide international capacity, measured by seats, by approximately 50 percent. This year, Air Canada launched new international services from Montreal to Venice and Mexico , Vancouver to Osaka, and Toronto to Amsterdam . In November, the airline will launch nonstop service to Dubai and Delhi from Toronto and it has also announced new service beginning in 2016 to Brisbane from Vancouver, to Lyon from Montreal, and to London – Gatwick from Toronto.

British Airways to add seasonal Glasgow – Salzburg flights

British Airways (London) will add weekly winter ski seasonal Airbus A319 service from Glasgow to Salzburg starting on December 12 per Airline Route.

BA is also adding Airbus A319 service from London (Gatwick) to Valencia starting on November 6 and to Porto on February 11, 2016.

In other news, British Airways on May 4, 2016 will resume the London (Gatwick) – Lima route with Boeing 777-200 ER aircraft. The restored route will operate three days a week.

WestJet’s pilots vote against union representation

WestJet (Calgary) has issued this statement:

WestJet today issued the following statement from President and CEO Gregg Saretsky regarding the outcome of the unionization vote among its Boeing 737 pilots.

“We are pleased that the majority of our pilots who voted have voted against union representation. Our model of cooperation and employee representation through the WestJet Pilots’ Association has allowed for the continued success of our pilots and our airline. Despite the positive outcome, there is continued work that needs to take place to better understand some of the issues for our pilot group and we can now turn our efforts to that goal.”

Meanwhile WJPA issued this statement:

Today the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) released the official results of the vote to unionize WestJet pilots. The results demonstrate decisive support for the WJPA: over 684 eligible pilots, representing 55 per cent of WestJet pilots who voted, showed their support for the WJPA by voting no to the WestJet Professional Pilots Association acting as their bargaining agent in matters of collective bargaining with their employer.

“WestJet pilots were offered a clear choice—continued representation by the WJPA or unionization,” said Captain Paul Ysselmuiden and Captain Michael Wesolowski , co-chairs of the WJPA. “These results demonstrate decisive support for the WJPA to continue to lead more than 1,500 pilots into the future.”

The WJPA strongly believes that WestJet and WestJet Encore pilots are stronger when they are part of one team. Moving forward, the WJPA will continue to effectively advocate on behalf of all WestJet and WestJet Encore pilots.

Jet2 to expand operations to Alicante in the fall

Jet2 (Jet2.com) (Leeds/Bradford) is expanding operations to Alicante, Spain from three U.K. airports this autumn. A total of 42 extra flights will now be available to the Costa Blanca area from Glasgow, Leeds/Bradford and Manchester.

The new flights will operate between September 30 and November 16, 2015.

WestJet to launch its “Tartan” Halifax – Glasgow service on May 29

WestJet (Calgary) will launch service from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Glasgow, Scotland, on board a special version of one of its Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 series aircraft adorned with a custom-designed WestJet tartan on its tail.

To mark the occasion of its first service to the United Kingdom, WestJet worked with the world’s last dedicated hand-crafted tartan mill, D.C. Dalgliesh of Selkirk, Scotland, to design a commemorative tartan in the airline’s distinctive blue and teal corporate colours. In addition to producing neck ties, cufflinks and scarves, WestJet also decaled two aircraft with the same tartan.

“We wanted to create something unique to celebrate our new service to Scotland and what could be more Scottish than creating our own company tartan?” said Lindsay Robertson, WestJet’s Lead, Creative Services. “On top of that, decaling an aircraft was something fun that we knew our guests would enjoy and in fact, one aircraft is already in service across our network and creating a lot of buzz. We encourage anyone who sees it to take a photo and tweet with the hashtag #TartanTail.”

WestJet’s first flight from Halifax to Glasgow departs Halifax Stanfield International Airport at 10:45 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2015. The daily, nonstop seasonal service runs until October 24, 2015.

WestJet launched its first transatlantic service in June 2014 between St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Dublin, Ireland. The daily, non-stop seasonal service resumed on May 1 this year, six weeks earlier than last year. It concludes on October 23, 2015.

WestJet is coming to Houston and Gander, adds Encore routes from Halifax

WestJet (Calgary) today announced two new destinations – Houston, Texas and Gander, Newfoundland – as part of the 2015 summer schedule release. The airline adds a total of nine new routes and increased frequency on 15 established routes.

In addition to nonstop flights to Houston, growth in Western Canada includes new daily non-stop flights from Calgary to Yellowknife and Terrace, BC, launching May 3, 2015. WestJet Encore service between Edmonton and Kamloops, BC, announced early last year, is set to begin on February 15, 2015.

In addition, WestJet has announced the largest increase in service from Halifax Stanfield International Airport since the airline first arrived in February 2003. This announcement, part of the 2015 summer schedule release, makes it official – WestJet Encore is now serving Canadians coast to coast.

The airline continues to bolster its presence in the Atlantic Provinces where the majority of route and frequency increases announced today take place. New nonstop daily service from Halifax to Gander and Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Sydney, Nova Scotia begins July 15, 2015, along with increased frequency between Halifax and Ottawa, Toronto and St. John’s, Newfoundland. Cities currently served from Halifax include Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Ontario, and six U.S. and international destinations.

Haligonians will also help WestJet celebrate new service between their fair city and Glasgow, United Kingdom, beginning May 29, 2015. As the halfway point between Europe and the west coast of North America, Halifax is the perfect jumping-off point for a tour across the pond.

BBC: Four injured at Stornoway as a Loganair SAAB 340B is flown off the runway on take off

Loganair (Flybe) (Glasgow) flight BE 6821 to Glasgow on January 2 did not operate as planned. According to this BBC report, the Flybe flight, operated with a SAAB 340B (G-LGNL, msn 246) with 25 passengers and three crew members, was caught in a crosswind as it was attempting to take off. The SAAB 340B, after lifting off the runway, veered left and came to rest off the runway. Two passengers were taken to the hospital and two others received minor injuries according to the report but declined medical assistance.

Loganair is a Flybe franchise and operates under the Flybe brand.

Stornoway is a town on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Stornoway is the largest town in the Western Isles and often receives stiff winds from the adjacent Atlantic Ocean.

The airline issued this short statement:

On departure from Stornoway Airport the 8.30 am flight BE 6821 for Glasgow left the runway during take off. The SAAB 340 aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and three crew members.

All passengers and crew were safely evacuated and returned to the airport’s terminal. Two passengers sustained minor injuries and have gone to the local hospital. A full investigation is now underway to ascertain the cause of the incident and the Air Accident Investigation Branch has been notified.

Jet2 to add leased Airbus A320s and A330s for routes from Glasgow and Manchester next summer

Jet2 (Jet2.com) (Leeds/Bradford) will again add leased Airbus A320s on the following routes from Glasgow for the summer 2015 season according to Airline Route: Alicante (May 3), Barcelona (May 7), Faro (May 2), Ibiza (May 22), Mahon (June 23), Malaga (May 24), Murcia (May 22), Palma de Mallorca (May 1) and Rome (Fiumicino) (June 18).

The low-fare airline is also leasing an AirAsia X Airbus A330 for these routes next summer: Bodrum (May 24), Dalaman (May 23), Lanzarote (May 21), Palma de Mallorca (May 22), Paphos (May 20) and Tenerife Sur (May 22).

WestJet is coming to Glasgow, Scotland on May 29, 2015

WestJet (Calgary) today announced Glasgow, United Kingdom, as its newest European destination. Daily nonstop flights from Halifax begin on May 29, 2015, with direct (same-aircraft) service from Toronto (Pearson), operated on one of the airline’s Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 series aircraft.

The new route between Halifax and Glasgow will operate seasonally from May 29, 2015 to October 23, 2015.

The Scotland-bound flight, WS 30, was numbered in honor of St. Andrew’s Day, which falls on November 30. WestJet’s second trans-Atlantic route is a five-hour 15-minute journey – only a wee bit longer than the airline’s popular flight from Halifax to Calgary.

WestJet will also resume its service between St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Dublin, Ireland, on May 1, 2015, six weeks earlier than in 2014.
