Skymark Airlines operates its last Airbus A330 revenue flight

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) yesterday (January 31) operated its last Airbus A330-300 revenue flight. According to ZipanguFlyer, the last revenue flight from Tokyo (Haneda) was flight BC 727 to Sapporo (New Chitose) operated with Airbus A330-343 JA330D. The final flight was the return leg, flight BC 730 back to Tokyo (Haneda), arriving back at 2236 local time.

Skymark Airlines to ground its Airbus A330s, will cut 15% of its flights as it reorganizes

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) announced today (January 29) it was filing for bankruptcy protection with the district court in Tokyo. The reorganizing airline announced it would eliminate 15 percent of its flights and ground its Airbus A330-300s on January 31 according to ZipanguFlyer.

Skymark Airlines to file for bankruptcy protection and reorganization

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) according to ZipangFlyer willย reportedly file for bankruptcy protection in the Tokyo District Court, after an emergency board meeting was held today (January 28). Investment fund Integral Corporation will reportedly finance and help Japan’s third largest carrier continue operations.

Skymark Airlines had grand ambitions and recently added Airbus A330-300s and even had Airbus A380s on order. Did they expand too fast? Can they successfully reorganize? What will the new Skymark look like?

Is AirAsia considering an investment in Skymark Airlines?

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) has been retrenching. Besides the cancellation of its Airbus A380 order by Airbus, the low-fare carrier has also announced it will leave Tokyo Narita and concentrate its flights at Tokyo (Haneda). Now according to ZipanguFlyer, there may be a new development:

“On August 19, the Nikkei Shimbun reported that the AirAsia Group has started considering an investment in ailing Skymark Airlines (BC/SKY), including a possible takeover. It said that the Malaysian LCC, a very important customer for Airbus, is also talking with the European manufacturer to reduce the penalties they are seeking with Skymark for the canceled Airbus A380 order.”

AirAsia is currently working with new Japanese partners to launch the second version of AirAsia (Japan) next year. If this report is correct and it is consummated, it would probably be the end of Skymark Airlines and Boeing would lose a loyal Japanese customer.

Airbus terminates the order for six Airbus A380s for Skymark Airlines

Airbus (Toulouse) has issued this short statement:

Following discussions with Skymark Airlines (Tokyo) and in light of the airlineโ€™s expressed intentions in respect of the A380, Airbus has in accordance with its contractual rights, notified Skymark Airlines that the purchase order for the six A380s signed in 2011 has been terminated. Airbus is reserving all its rights and remedies.

Skymark Airlines to introduce a “One Piece Jet” special livery

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) on July 19 will introduce a “One Piece Jet” special livery based on the popular Japanese cartoon series according to ZipanguFlyer.

According to Wikipedia, “One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Weekly Shลnen Jump since August 4, 1997; the individual chapters are being published in tankลbon volumes by Shueisha, with the first released on December 24, 1997, and the 74th volume released as of June 2014. One Piece follows the adventures of a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy whose body gains the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit, and his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy explores the ocean in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as One Piece in order to become the next Pirate King.”

Skymark Airlines keeps the miniskirt alive, but for how long?

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo) is keeping the miniskirt alive for its flight attendants but the carrier is coming under increasing pressure to stop using the uniform according to ZipanguFlyer. According to the report, Skymark hasย “dismissed claims by the Japan Federation of Cabin Attendants, which is part of the Japan Federation of Aviation Worker’s Union,ย that the new one-piece short-skirt uniforms pose a threat to safety and could also make the flight attendants victims of sexual harassment.”

Skymark Airlines takes delivery of its first two Airbus A330-300s

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo), Japanโ€™s third largest airline has taken delivery of the first two A330-300s (JA330A and JA330B) out of a total of ten on lease. Skymark Airlines becomes the first Japanese carrier to operate the Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft.

Skymark Airlinesโ€™ A330s, configured in a very high comfort, all โ€Green Seatโ€ cabin with 271 seats, will start scheduled flights on May 31, 2014 (delayed from April 18) from Tokyo Haneda to Fukuoka. Skymark Airlines has also announced plans for A330-300 services from Tokyo Haneda to Sapporo and Naha at a later date.

The A330-300 received Validation Type Certificate (VTC) from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in January 2014. Skymark Airlines signed a Flight Hour Services (FHS) components contract with Airbus covering support for all of 10 leased A330 aircraft.ย  Airbus Customer Services will provide spare parts availability guaranteed through an extensive scope of more than 700 line replaceable units. Skymark Airlinesโ€™ A330s will be equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines.

Skymark Airlines to start Airbus A380 service from Tokyo Narita to New York JFK in December

Skymark Airlines (Tokyo) will soon take delivery of its first Airbus A380. The airframe (man 162) has been assembled at Toulouse and will be flying soon with the temporary marks of F-WWSL before it is delivered to the Japanese carrier. The airline is planning to inaugurate Airbus A380 service from Tokyo (Narita) to New York (JFK) in December.

Skymark has six Airbus A380s on order.

Update:ย Following the completion of its structural assembly, Skymark Airlinesโ€™ first A380 made its first journey on its wheels, moving to the next station at the Final Assembly Line in Toulouse on February 24. At this โ€œstation 30โ€ Skymark Airlinesโ€™ first A380 will undergo general tests on electric and hydraulic systems, mobile parts, landing gears and fuel tanks. Also, the aircraftโ€™s four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines will be mounted.

Skymark Airlines, Japanโ€™s third largest and fast growing airline, has placed six firm A380 orders and will become the first Japanese A380 operator. Skymark plans to dispatch its A380s on international trunk routes, in particular linking Narita to destinations in the US to offer its passengers the unique experience of space and comfort when flying the A380.
