XL Airways Germany files for bankruptcy protection

XL Airways Germany (Frankfurt) after suspending operations for the winter season on December 14, filed for bankruptcy protection and reorganization in theย local district court in Darmstadt, Germany on December 27.

EgyptAir to launch a new route to Manchester in June

EgyptAir (Cairo) is planning to start two new routes from Cairo in June 2013 per Airline Route. Cairo-Manchester will start on June 1 and will operate five days a week with Boeing 737-800s.

Service to Toronto will be via a code-share with Air Canada via London Heathrow (correcting our previous report).

Germania to add 10 routes from Bremen next summer

Germania Fluggesellschaft (Berlin) is adding 10 new routes from Bremen as it expands operations for the coming summer season. The new routes will include Enfidha (starting on May 11),ย Fuerteventura (May 6), Ibiza (May 6),ย Irakleion (May 8), Las Palmas (May 5), Mahon (May 9), Moscow Domodedovo (May 7), Nice (May 2), Tenerife (South) (May 2) and Varna (March 31).

British Airways to add more frequencies from Toronto

British Airways (London) hasย announced it will be increasing its flights between Toronto (Pearson) and London (Heathrow) from March 31, 2013.

Additional flights on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays make the total frequency on the route at 17 roundtrips per week. The new frequencies will be served on Boeing 767-300 aircraft, offering Club World business class, World Traveller Plus premium economy and World Traveller, the airline’s economy class.

Flights departing from Toronto arrive at London Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

As previously reported, British Airways also announced a new route to Chengdu, China, just weeks after starting services to Seoul in South Korea. The thrice-weekly service will start on September 22, 2013. The route will be served by a four-cabin Boeing 777 with First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller.

Ryanair announces its 55th base at Chania, Greece

Ryanair (Dublin) has announced it will open its firstย Greek base and the 55thย base in total at Chania in April 2013 with one based aircraft. The ultra low-fare airline unveiled 11 new routes (26 in total), from Chania to Billund, Bremen, Bristol, Eindhoven, Katowice, Marseille, Memmingen, Thessaloniki, Venice, Vilnius and Warsaw. Ryanair is investing over $70 million at Chania.
Chania is the second largest city on the island of Creteย and is also the capital of theย Chania region. Chania is located the north coast of the island, about 90ย miles west ofย Heraklion which gets most of the traffic to Crete.

Cayman Airways to return to the Grand Cayman-Dallas/Fort Worth route on April 10

Cayman Airways (Grand Cayman)ย will resume nonstop, year-round flights from Grand Cayman to Dallas/Fort Worth starting on April 10, 2013. The route will operate two days a week.

The new schedule also facilitates immediate connections to Cayman Brac from Grand Cayman.

Cayman Airways operates four Boeing 737-300s and two de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft.

Bi-weekly flights will be scheduled Wednesdays and Saturdays for the following times:

AeroMexico finalizes its order for six additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

Boeing (Chicago) and AeroMexico (Mexico City) today announced AM has finalized an order for six 787-9 Dreamliners, with reconfirmation rights for four additional Dreamliners. The order by Mexico’s largest airline, which was first announced as a commitment in July, is valued at more than $1.46 billion at published list prices.

The acquisition of these Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, is part of the 100 aircraft announced earlier this year.

Grupo Aeromexico will have a total of 19 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in its fleet, whose first delivery is expected to be in the summer of 2013.

Made primarily from composite materials, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes and will allow Aeromexico to replace older aircraft on its European, Asian and South American routes. As a result of innovative technologies, the airplane offers unparalleled operating economics, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. More than 800 787s are on order by 58 customers, a testament to the airplane’s unique capabilities.

AirTran Airways to fly Denver-Los Cabos starting on March 10

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) and its wholly owned subsidiary, AirTran Airways, have announced new international flights between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) in Baja California, Mexico.

AirTran’s daily service on the new route begins on March 10, 2013.

AirTran Airways also currently serves SJD Los Cabos International Airport with daily service to/from Orange County (increasing to twice-daily as of June 2, 2013) and has flights between other destinations in the US and both Cancun and Mexico City.

Southwest Airlines began service to Denver on January 3, 2006, with 13 daily departures to three destinations. ย The airline currently operates 163 daily flights to 54 destinations from Denver.ย  Southwest recently demonstrated its LUV for the state of Colorado by dedicating Colorado One, a specialty aircraft painted with the colors of the Colorado state flag (see below).

American to start new routes from New York JFK, Los Angeles and Miami in April

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) will commence New York (JFK)-Houston (Bush Intercontinental) service and restart Raleigh/Durham-Los Angeles flights on April 2 per Airline Route. Additionally the company will start weekly service from the Miami hub to both Fort-de-France (Martinique) and Pointe-a-Pitre (Guadeloupe) on April 6.

All new routes will be served with Boeing 737-800 equipment.

XL Airways Germany goes into hibernation for the winter season

XL Airways Germany (Frankfurt) suspended all operations for the winter season on December 14. The company came to the conclusion there was not enough work to keep the company flying during the slow winter season.

CanJet Airlines (2nd) (Halifax) has leased three of the five Boeing 737-800s for the winter season until May 2013. Hamburg Airways has taken over the remaining winter contracts of XL Airways Germany.

Two Boeing 737-800s have been put into storage at the Cologne/Bonn Airport.

XL Airways Germany was acquired last year by X-Air Aviation, the same U.S. and Swiss holding company that also recently took control of XL Airways France.
