Lufthansa Group to refuel its aircraft at Oslo with a “biokerosene” mixture

Lufthansa Group (Frankfurt) has issued this statement:

From next year the Lufthansa Group will be fuelling their aircraft at Oslo airport with a biokerosene mixture. The Group recently became the first airline group to sign this kind of contract with the Norwegian oil company Statoil Aviation. The Company is thus pushing forward along the path of research, testing and use of alternative fuels that it started on over four years ago.

For a period of one year beginning March 2015, Statoil will feed 2.5 million gallons of sustainably produced, certified biofuel into the tanks at Oslo airport. The approximately 5,000 flights the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Germanwings, Brussels Airlines) operates from the Norwegian capital will then be flying on a biokerosene mixture.

Oslo Airport is the world’s first large commercial airport to offer continuous provision of biofuel over a long period and to fuel aircraft with biokerosene directly from its hydrant system. For the Lufthansa Group, this is the next step from its previous test flights, made as part of the recently concluded burnFAIR project, toward the use of alternative fuels in regular flight operations.

In 2011, Lufthansa was the first airline in the world to run regular flight operations with a biokerosene mixture by operating an Airbus A321 between Frankfurt and Hamburg for half a year as part of the project. The long-term testing was accompanied by detailed emissions measurements and research into production processes and biomass availability.

SAS signs a contract with Statoil Aviation for a regular supply of biofuel at Oslo, Norway

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS (Stockholm) has issued this statement regarding a regular supply of biofuel at Oslo Airport:

SAS has, along with the Lufthansa Group and KLM, signed an agreement with Statoil Aviation for a regular supply of biofuel at Oslo Airport.

SAS was first off the ground in Norway and from Stockholm Arlanda in Sweden with a biofuel mix around a week ago and this agreement shows the airline takes its corporate social responsibility seriously in reducing its green house gas emissions.

Via an agreement signed with Avinor and the above named airlines, Statoil Aviation is to supply 2.5 million liters of biofuel to the refueling facility at Oslo Airport. With a 50% biofuel mix, this will fuel around 3,000 flights between Oslo and Bergen and make OSL the first major airport in the world to offer a regular supply of biofuel as part of daily operations from March 2015.

Via a continuous renewal of its airline fleet and a comprehensive environment efficiency drive in the air and on the ground, SAS has reduced its total CO2 emissions by the airline by around 13% since 2005.

The airline has also enjoyed an increase in production over the same period. SAS is also the first and only airline in Scandinavia whose fleet consists exclusively of next generation jet aircraft.

From next year, the most energy efficient short and long-haul aircraft will be rolled out one after the other: Airbus A330 Enhanced, Airbus A320 Neo, followed by the Airbus A350.

SAS aims to use synthetic fuel on an increasingly regular basis in the next few years, and expects biofuel to become competitive with the fossil fuel alternative. For this to happen, a general environment and tax policy will be required from governments, based on aviation being a form of internationally competitive public transport with thin profit margins.

Emirates arrives today in Oslo, Norway

Emirates (Dubai) expanded its Scandinavian reach today (September 2) with the start of its daily nonstop service to Oslo.

Emirates’ daily flight to Oslo, operated with a Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft. The inaugural flight today was welcomed by Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen, along with partners from the travel trade and local media. A contingent of Norwegian business leaders based in Dubai also accompanied senior Emirates representatives on the inaugural flight. It is estimated that over 1,200 Norwegians currently reside in the United Arab Emirates.

On today’s flight departing Oslo, fresh salmon are being transported in the belly hold of the Emirates Boeing 777-300 ER to Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. Live king crabs will also be shipped to Incheon and pharmaceuticals and electronics will also be uplifted and transported to other destinations on Emirates’ global network.

Emirates has had a solid presence in the Norwegian market even before the introduction of daily passenger flights. Its cargo arm has been active in salmon traffic from Norway to other Emirates destinations such as such as Copenhagen, Stockholm, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Amsterdam.
Air cargo has a vital role in many industries’ global supply chains and Emirates SkyCargo anticipates that with the new service and 23 tonnes of cargo capacity per flight, more time-sensitive salmon and other cargo such as ship spares can be easily transported. Daily services are particularly important to businesses running streamlined operations that depend on rapid delivery of goods.

Emirates’ new daily flight to Oslo departs Dubai as flight EK 159 at 0700 and arrives at Oslo Airport, (Gardermoen) at 1210. The return flight, EK 160 departs at 1355 and arrives at Dubai International Airport at 2250.

This week, Emirates will further expand in Europe with the launch of Brussels on September 5. This will be closely followed by Budapest on October 27.

Emirates is coming to Oslo, Norway

Emirates (Dubai) will expand its European network with a new daily flight to Oslo, Norway, from September 2, 2014 marking its third Scandinavian gateway.

Operated by a Boeing 777-300 ER, the daily service will offer three cabin classes with eight seats in First Class, 42 seats in Business Class and 310 seats in Economy Class.

In addition to passenger operations, Emirates SkyCargo will offer 23 tons of cargo capacity between the two cities. Popular commodities are expected to be; oil and gas equipment, maritime and ship spares, pharmaceuticals, seafood, chemicals, electronics, telecommunication equipment, machinery, dairy products and fruits and vegetables bound for markets like Vietnam, China and Taiwan.

Emirates new daily flight to Oslo will depart Dubai as flight EK 159 at 0700 and arrives at Oslo Airport, Gardermoen at 1210. The return flight, flight EK 160 will depart at 1355 and arrives at Dubai International Airport at 2250.

Emirates’ launch of Oslo will follow the launch of Kano and Abuja in Nigeria on August 1 and Chicago on August 5.
