Wizz Air to fly to Iceland from Poland

Wizz Air (Budapest) has announced further growth of its route network from Poland. From July 3, 2015 Wizz Air will start operating a new service from Gdansk to Keflavik (near Reykjavik) in Iceland, with two weekly flights.

Wizz Air now offers a total of 116 Polish routes to 22 countries from seven Polish airports.

In other news,ย Wizz Air has announced twice-weekly service from Budapest to Tenerife, starting on October 30 with departures on Mondays on Fridays.

Wizz Air now flies from Budapest Airport with 41 routes to 21 countries.

Finally, Wizz Airย announced a new Debrecen route to Bergamo (near Milan) which will start operating with two weekly flights on October 25.

Ryanair to launch three new winter routes from Copenhagen

Ryanair (Dublin) hasย announced more growth at its Copenhagen base with three new routes from October 2015 to Alicante, Budapest and Malaga, as part of Ryanairโ€™s 2015 winter schedule. These three new routes will add to Ryanairโ€™s nine Copenhagen routes already operated to Brussels, Cologne/Bonn, Dublin, London (Stansted), Madrid, Milan (Malpensa), Rome, Stockholm and Warsaw.

Finnair expands its codeshare agreement with Airberlin

Finnairโ€™s (Helsinki) AY designator will be added to selected services operated by Airberlin (Berlin) or its subsidiary Niki (Vienna) to Bucharest, Catania, Chania, Cologne, Larnaca, Mรกlaga, Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Paphos and Stuttgart. Finnair passengers will be able to connect to these cities via Berlin, Dรผsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna or Zurich.

Most of the new codeshares will supplement Finnair’s own nonstop services from Helsinki, allowing passengers more travel dates and a wider choice of schedules.

Finnair and Airberlin have been codesharing across Scandinavia and Central Europe since 2010.

Finnair and Airberlin to expand their codeshare relationship

Finnair (Helsinki) is expanding its codeshare cooperation in Europe with fellow oneworld alliance member Airberlin (Berlin).

Finnairโ€™s AY designator will be added to selected services operated by Airberlin or its subsidiary Niki to Bucharest, Catania, Chania, Cologne, Larnaca, Malaga, Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Paphos and Stuttgart. Finnair passengers will be able to connect to these cities via Berlin, Dรผsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna or Zurich.

Most of the new codeshares supplement Finnairโ€™s own nonstop services from Helsinki, allowing passengers more travel dates and a wider choice of schedules. The codeshares are planned to take effect from early May.

Finnair and Airberlin have been codesharing across Scandinavia and Central Europe since 2010.

SAS launches its summer schedule with 11 new routes

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS (Stockholm) has started it summer schedule with 11 new routes. The airline issued this report on the new routes and summer services:

SAS is launching its summer timetable for 2015 with a number of new destinations from Scandinavia. Eleven new routes are being launched and many popular summer destinations are also returning.

From March 29, SAS will gradually be introducing its summer timetable and launching a total of eleven brand new routes, both from its main Scandinavian hubs and regional airports such as Gothenburg and Bergen.

New Routes

From Sweden

– Stockholmโ€“Budapest: Departures on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. First departure March 29. No departures during the high season.
– Stockholm โ€“ Riga: Departures daily. First departure 29 March.
– Stockholmโ€“Faro: Departures on Saturdays, plus Wednesdays in the high season. First departure April 4.
– Stockholmโ€“Ankara: Departures on Thursdays. First departure July 2.
– Gothenburgโ€“Alanya (Gazipasa): Departures on Wednesdays. First departure July 1.
– Gothenburgโ€“Dublin: Departures on Saturdays, plus Wednesdays and Sundays in the high season. First departure April 11.

From Denmark

– Copenhagenโ€“Edinburgh: Departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and daily during the high season. First departure March 29.
– Copenhagenโ€“Ankara: Departures on Saturdays, plus Mondays and Wednesdays in the high season. First departure June 6.

From Norway

– Osloโ€“Salzburg: Departures on Saturdays. First departure May 23.

Norwegian and easyJet adopt a “two-person” cockpit rule

Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norwegian.com) (Oslo) and easyJet (UK) (London-Luton) have become early adopters of a new “two persons” cockpit rule in the wake of the devastating news of what caused Germanwings flight 4U 9525 to crash in the French Alps. The rule is already in place in the United States.

In addition, Deutsche Welle is reporting “Germany’s BDL aviation federation announced late Thursday that airlines such as Lufthansa and Airberlin intended to immediately enact the two-person rule in consultation with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation.”

In other news, overshadowed by the stunning Germanwings crash investigation announcements, easyJet yesterday (March 26) celebrated the opening of its new base at Francisco de Sรก Carneiro Airport in Porto. Three new UK routes from Manchester, Bristol and London Luton Airports to the new Porto base will be launched this summer.

Flights from Bristol to Porto will commence on April 19 and operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Porto is the 25th base of easyJetโ€™s network and the airline will also inaugurate its 26th base in Amsterdam on March 31.

easyJet started its operations in Portugal in 1999 and flies now to 48 destinations in Europe being the third largest airline in the country with 12% market share and more than 4 million passengers carried in 2014. easyJet flies to Faro, Funchal, Porto and Lisbon and from 29 March a service will start connecting the capital with Ponta Delgada in Azores.

Ryanair backs off on trans-Atlantic flights

Ryanair (Dublin) has reportedly backed-off on media reports this week of a possible board approval and proposed low-fare trans-Atlantic flights in the near future. According to this BBC report, quoting a Ryanair statement, “Ryanairย has not considered or approved any trans-Atlantic project and does not intend to do so”.

Niki to launch flights to Athens on April 1

Niki (flyniki.com) (Vienna) will add the Vienna-Athens route on April 1. The new route will operateย daily (except on Saturdays) with Airbus A320s.

Niki flight (HG 8640) will take off from Vienna at 11:30 and land in the Greek capital at 13:35. The return flight (HG 8641) will leave Athens at 14:25 and land in Vienna at 16:45.

Germanwings is coming back to Berlin Schonefeld

Germanwings (2nd)ย (Cologne/Bonn) is coming back to Berlin (Schoenefeld). The low-fare subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group will resume the Cologne/Bonn – Berlin (Schoenefeld) route on October 5. The airline will also serve the Stuttgart – Schoenefeld route starting on October 25. Ryanair has announced it will start a new base at Schoenefeld as we previously reported.

Ryanair to further expand in Germany at Cologne/Bonn

Ryanair (Dublin) is doublingย its Cologne/Bonn traffic as it launches seven new routes, including a four-times daily service to/from Berlin (Schoenefeld), as part of its Cologne Winter 2015/16 schedule (17 routes in total).

Besides Berlin, the new routes include Copenhagen (once daily), Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) (weekly), Milan (Malpensa) (twice-daily), Porto (four times weekly), Valencia (three times weekly) and Warsaw (daily).
