Olympic Air (3rd) (Athens) will take over as the new Greek flag carrier on September 29. Outgoing Olympic Airlines (2nd) (Athens) will operate its last flights on September 28.

KD Avia ceases operations for the last time

KD Avia (Kaliningrad) ceased all operations and declared bankruptcy on September 8 as it was facing a suspension of its AOC by the Russian government on September 14. Previously the carrier had suspended operations earlier this year on March 11 and was able to resume operations with backing from a bank.

Lufthansa receives 12 potential bmi bidders

Bmi (subsidiary of Lufthansa) (East Midlands and London Heathrow) through Lufthansa has received bids from 12 prospective buyers according to published reports, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Lufthansa is considering all options concerning bmi.

Bellview Airlines (Lagos) had an incident yesterday (September 3) in Lagos when security forces were deployed to quell a riot from stranded passengers of a very delayed Bellview flight. The passengers had been waiting for their flight since Monday according to local media reports!

EasyJet drops East Midlands, cuts 20% at Luton

EasyJet (UK) (EasyJet Airline Company Limited) (London-Luton) has decided to drop all flights (120 flights per week) from East Midlands. In addition it will also eliminate about 20 percent of its operations at its Luton Airport headquarters near London due to rising airport costs and the recession. Staff cuts will be forthcoming.

Emirates Airline (Dubai) on July 29 became the world’s largest Boeing 777 operator with the delivery of Emirates’ 78th 777, the airline’s 45th 777-300 ER (Extended Range) (777-31H A6-ECS msn 38980). The Dubai-based carrier is the only airline to operate every model type, with an additional nine 777-200s, 12 777-300s, 10 777-200 LRs (Longer Range) and two 777 Freighters in its fleet. The company has 28 additional Triple Sevens on order.

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) has been a loyal Boeing customer but it has now turned to both Airbus and Boeing for new aircraft. The flag carrier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for 12 A350-900s with deliveries starting in 2017. The company also signed a firm contract for five 777-200 LRs (Longer Range) airliners becoming the first first LR operator in Africa. The first delivery will be in October 2010. The airline also has five 787 Dreamliners on order.
