Blue Islands to drop the Jersey-Manchester route on June 10

Blue Islands (Guernsey) is planning to operate the last flight to and from Manchester on June 10 from Jersey per the BBC. The airline of the Channel Islands will redeploy the aircraft for its new “Blue Shuttle” (see video below) service between Guernsey and Jersey.

LIAT orders three new ATR 42-600s

Leeward Islands Air Transport Services (LIAT) (Antigua) and ATR announced the signature of an agreement for the purchase of a total of three 48-seats ATR 42-600s. The deal also includes options for two 68-seat ATR 72-600, and is valued at over $100 million. LIAT will take delivery of their very first ATR 42-600 in June 2013.

With the arrival of these aircraft from ATR, plus additional ATR -600s under discussion from leasing companies, LIAT will progressively replace its current fleet of former Bombardier DHC-8 turboprop aircraft. The airline currently operates a fleet of 14 aircraft over its Caribbean network, which includes main hubs at Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad, and destinations, among others, in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, St. Marten, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.

In addition, Air Lease Corporation announced LIAT and ALC signed long term lease agreements for two new ATR 72-600 aircraft, delivering in June and August 2013.

Antigua-based LIAT is owned by 11 different governments in the Eastern Caribbean, and is the major scheduled airline operator in that region.

Hawaiian Holdings acquires its first ATR 42-500 for a new inter-island subsidiary

Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. (Hawaiian Airlines) (Honolulu) has completed the purchase of its first ATR 42-500 twin-turboprop aircraft, and has a purchase agreement in place to acquire a second plane to be delivered in November 2012.

The previously-owned aircraft are being acquired from ASL Aviation Group Limited (Dublin, Ireland). Purchase terms are not being disclosed.

According to the airline, the aircraft will be used to inaugurate new passenger service to Moloka‘i and Läna‘i in 2013. When configured for neighbor island use, the planes will seat 44 to 50 passengers.

The new turboprop service will operate separately from Hawaiian Airlines. Hawaiian Holdings is currently developing the name and brand identity of the new entity.

According to HNL RareBirds, Hawaiian’s first ATR 42-500 will be registered as N801HC (msn 629). The aircraft was originally delivered to Czech Airlines-CSA as OK-JFL in July 2004.

Blue Islands (blueislands.com) (formerly Rockhopper) (Guernsey) will add two new routes radiating from Jersey (Channel Islands) to Amsterdam and Paris on February 4, 2013.

Island Air to lease five ATR 42s from Aerway Leasing

Island Air (Honolulu) has announced the signing of a letter of intent (LOI), leasing five ATR 42 jet prop aircraft. The announcement is the next step in the carrier’s New Business Plan (NBP) launched earlier this year.

The agreement was reached with Chicago’s Aerway Leasing, LLC for 5 ATR 42 jet prop aircraft.

The first two aircraft are set to arrive in Honolulu by end of year with three more joining the fleet in the summer of 2013.

Avianca and the TACA Group apply to the DOT to combine all operations under the Avianca name and AV code

Avianca – TACA Group has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to unify its entire operation under the AV code in 2013.

The application reads:

“TACA International Airlines, S.A. (TACA), Trans American Airlines, S.A. d/b/a TACA Peru (TACA Peru), Lineas Aereas Costarricenses S.A. (LACSA), and Aviateca S.A. (Aviateca) (together, the “TACA Group”) along with Aerovias Del Continente Arnericano S.A. (Avianca) hereby request an exemption under 49 U.S.C. § 40109 permitting them to register a joint trade name under 14 C.P.R. Part 215 for their collective use of the trade name “Avianca” and use of the designator code “AV” for their services in foreign air transportation to and from the United States. Additionally, the TACA Group requests blanket statements of authorization pursuant to 14 C.F.R. Part 212 in order to display the “AV*” designator code as more fully described herein. The Joint Applicants plan to use the trade name “Avianca” and the “AV” designator code in their combined marketing and sale of services to and from the United States, starting in the first quarter of 2013

Since 2005, TACA, TACA Peru, LACSA, and Aviateca have been authorized to operateunder the common “TACA” trade name and “TA” designator code.’ In 2010, the Joint Applicants came under the common ownership of a single parent company. As such, the Joint Applicants now seek to maximize the marketing potential of their common ownership with a new trade name and designator code that represents the combined strength of the Joint Applicants throughout the Americas.

LACSA holds exemption authority to operate under the common “TACA” trade name and ‘TA” designator code, it has continued to hold out and operate service under its own “LR” designator code. LACSA will, however, complete the necessary technological changes necessary to exclusively use the “Avianca” trade name and “AV” designator code.”

With this application approval, it is expected the TACA name, code and brand will be retired in 2013.

Island Air launches a new livery and will add ATRs in Hawaii

Island Air (Hawaii) is overhauling their already colorful livery. Following the announcement by Hawaiian Airlines that they will start an inter-island turboprop subsidiary, Island Air has announced a complete image and brand overhaul. The inter-island airline is also adding ATR 42s and ATR 72s starting in August.

The comprehensive rebranding touches every aspect of the airline; from an enhanced website to a newly inspired aircraft livery design, including an exciting new logo mark and identity.

Along with the new look, Island Air is upgrading its fleet with ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft. The new aircraft are more fuel efficient, and carry more passengers than the current Bombardier DHC-8-100 aircraft that are being replaced.

The changes and additions to Island Air’s brand will take place incrementally with the complete rebranding targeted for completion in the fall.

conViasa’s ATR 42-300 YV1010 crashes on takeoff, 13 killed

ConViasa (Caracas) flight V0 2351 operated by ATR 42-300 YV1010 (msn 371) with 47 crew and passengers on aboard, crashed today (September 13) shortly after take-off from Cuidad Guayana, Venezuela while operating a domestic scheduled passenger flight to Porlamar, Margarita Island. The aircraft reportedly crashed into a steel factory with at least 13 people killed. YV1010 was delivered on September 5, 2006 and was destroyed.
