JetBlue to launch Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood – Aguadilla, Puerto Rico flights, also adds more Baltimore service

JetBlue Airways (New York) has announced it is adding a new route between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The airline will also add additional frequencies in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, its South Florida focus city, and at Logan International Airport (BOS) in Boston, where JetBlue is the largest airline. S

Roundtrip flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, will operate daily beginning May 5, 2016, on JetBlue’s Embraer 190 aircraft (above).

In addition to the new route, JetBlue is adding flights to some of its routes on the east coast. Starting May 5, 2016 the airline will add an additional daily roundtrip flight between Boston and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). The addition comes as JetBlue has grown significantly this year in Baltimore, recently adding service to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood just last month.

Also beginning May 5, 2016, JetBlue will add an additional daily roundtrip nonstop flight between Boston and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood.

Norwegian launches its U.S. flights to Martinique and Guadeloupe

Norwegian Air Shuttle’s (Norwegian.com) (Oslo) inaugural flight from Boston to the French Caribbean island of Martinique will take off today, while the first flights from New York and Baltimore/Washington to Martinique and Guadeloupe also departing this week.

Norwegian will be the only airline to offer free WiFi and live TV service between the U.S. and Caribbean using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which already operate on 29 routes from the UK to Europe.

Norwegian recently launched the UK’s only direct flights to the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico and announced brand new low-cost flights to Boston from 2016 serviced by its state-of-the-art Dreamliner aircraft.

In other news, Norwegian retired its last Boeing 737-300 Classic in November.

Southwest to add the Baltimore/Washington – Minneapolis/St. Paul route

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) is adding two daily flights from Baltimore/Washington to Minneapolis/St. Paul. The new, twice-daily, nonstop service begins on April 12, 2016.

Southwest has more than 60 nonstop destinations from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. These include flights to the Caribbean and Latin America, including Southwest’s newest destination, Liberia, Costa Rica.

Emirates and Alaska Airlines to codeshare

Emirates (Dubai) today (October 26) announced a new codeshare and lounge agreement with Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma).

Emirates continued:

Pending governmental approval, Emirates will begin marketing up to 300 daily Alaska Airlines flights, which will give customers the simplicity of purchasing connecting flights on both airlines using one reservation, and a seamless ticketing, check-in, boarding and baggage check experience during the entire journey. In addition, the new codeshare agreement will feature several other new benefits including reciprocal lounge access and priority boarding and check-in for elite fliers.

With two daily flights now departing from Dubai to Seattle/Tacoma, the enhanced codeshare agreement gives passengers easy connections to 49 cities including Honolulu, Denver, Las Vegas, Portland, Phoenix, Pullman, Sacramento, Spokane, Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks as well as Canadian destinations such as Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria.

National Airlines is coming to Vancouver and Windsor from Sanford, Florida

National Airlines (5th) (Orlando) is expanding to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) issued this statement:

Vancouver Airport Authority has announced the upcoming arrival of National Airlines to Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Starting January 20, 2016 , the twice weekly scheduled service will operate between Orlando-Sanford International Airport (SFB) and YVR.

National Airlines will operate a Boeing 757-200 aircraft on the route. Flights will depart SFB on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 18:45 and arrive in YVR at 22:15. The aircraft will turn around and leave YVR at 23:55 and arrive in SFB at 08:30 the following morning.

Previously National Airlines announced nonstop service between Windsor, Ontario, (YQG), and Sanford, Florida, (SFB). The inaugural flight, on Thursday, December 17, 2015, will depart Windsor International Airport at 2:30 PM EST and arrive Orlando-Sanford International Airport at 5:00 PM EST. National Airlines will fly this route year ‘round. National will offer return flights from Orlando-Sanford International Airport also on Thursdays and Sundays, departing at 10:30 AM EST and arriving in Windsor at 1:00 PM EST.

This winter National Airlines will operate nonstop service from Orlando-Sanford International Airport to five destinations:

Alaska Airlines inaugurates Los Angeles – Baltimore (BWI) service

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) inaugurates new service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Baltimore today with Boeing 737 aircraft. The carrier is already serving the Seattle/Tacoma – Baltimore/Washington (BWI) market.

Southwest’s flight attendants vote down the tentative agreement

Southwest Airlines‘ (Dallas) flight attendants have turned down the tentative contract by a large 87 percent margin. The airline issued this statement:

Southwest Airlines (LUV) has announced that its Flight Attendants have voted down a tentative agreement that would have ended two years of negotiations. Representatives for Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 556 say Flight Attendants rejected the deal by 87 percent of those casting ballots. Nearly 89 percent of eligible Flight Attendants voted.

“This agreement ensured that our Flight Attendants would stay atop the industry in pay and benefits,” said Randy Babbitt, Southwest Senior Vice President Labor Relations. “It improved the Company’s competitiveness with certain work-rule changes and supported our evolving network, both domestically and in international markets. So naturally we’re disappointed that it didn’t pass.”

The deal was slated to run through May 2019 and contained fixed wage increases, cash bonuses, and quality of life improvements. Southwest says it remains committed to reaching an agreement that best serves the interests of both the Company and its Flight Attendants.

“Knowing how volatile our industry can be, I can’t imagine a better time to secure an agreement,” said Vice President Cabin Services Mike Hafner. “But together we will find a way to move forward. Southwest Flight Attendants are the finest in the industry, and I am continuously proud of their consistent efforts and the caring service they provide our Customers.”

Southwest expects TWU leadership will take some time to evaluate the results prior to returning to direct bargaining. But for now, Southwest Flight Attendants will continue working under the terms of their current agreement, which became amendable May 31, 2013.

Spirit Airlines launches two new routes from Los Angeles

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) today (July 9) introduced two new nonstop routes between Los Angeles and Kansas City and Baltimore-Washington, DC.

The new daily, nonstop service will connect Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). Spirit now offers 15 daily departures out of LAX to 11 cities, and will be adding more routes in the future. On August 20, Spirit will offer another nonstop route to and from Los Angeles to Atlanta’s Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Additionally, the carrier will provide twice daily service to/from Oakland starting on November 12.

According to the airline, Spirit is the fastest growing airline in the United States. With a scheduled growth of approximately 30% this year, Spirit expects to keep expanding service by adding new destinations at the lowest available fares in the industry.

Southwest to add another two new routes in January

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) on January 6, 2016, besides those routes previously reported, will add two new routes and also resume service on two other routes. The carrier will start daily service between Boise and Sacramento and Burbank and San Francisco on this day per Airline Route.

The carrier is also resuming service between Indianapolis and Chicago (Midway) and Little Rock and St. Louis on January 6.
