Hawaiian Airlines arrives in Boston

Hawaiian Airlines Flight 90 flew into aviation history on April 5, inaugurating the nationโ€™s longest interstate route when it left Honoluluโ€™s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) on April 4 and touched down at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) on the morning of April 5, bringing with it a five-times-a-week dose of aloha to New England.

Prior to this flight, Boston was the largest U.S. market without nonstop service to Hawaiโ€˜i with some 250 people flying between eastern New England and the islands each way on any given day. Boston’s renowned educational and medical facilities are among the many attractions drawing Hawaiโ€˜i travelers to the Bay State. The route generated about $79 million in ticket sales last year.

In addition to vacations, the route opens economic and cultural opportunities. The seafood industry, important in both states, will benefit. On board Flight HA89 as it departed Boston for Hawaiโ€˜i: nearly one-and-a-half tons of live lobster. Hawaiian fish and produce will also be regularly flown to New England.

At 5,095 miles, Hawaiian’s HNL-BOS route is the longest regularly scheduled interstate route in U.S. history. It will take nearly 10 hours traveling to Boston from Honolulu, and roughly 11.5 hours traveling from Boston in the morning and arriving in Honolulu in the afternoon. When the ship Thaddeus sailed from Boston to Hawai’i in 1819, it took the missionaries who were onboard 164 days to reach the islands.

For JetBlue fans, Hawaiianโ€™s expanded codeshare with Bostonโ€™s largest airline lets customers earn and redeem TrueBlue points on Hawaiian flights. The relationship also opens a plethora of new cities with connections through Boston, including Washington, D.C. (DCA), Pittsburgh (PIT), Philadelphia (PHL), Baltimore (BWI), Cleveland (CLE), and Detroit (DTW), all of which currently cannot connect to Hawaiโ€˜i through JetBlue in New York.

Last year, about 127,000 people from New England โ€“ more than half of them from Massachusetts — visited Hawaiโ€™i, according to the Hawaiโ€˜i Tourism Authority.

JetBlue adds more routes and flights from Boston Logan

JetBlue Airways hasย announced the next phase of growth at Logan International Airport (BOS) as it advances toward its goal of 200 daily departures in the coming years.

Beginning this summer, JetBlue will add more flights on twelve popular routes while also expanding or adjusting schedules to offer hourly service to Washington, D.C. and the New York metro area. The move, which will benefit both leisure and business customers, is the latest in a series of growth announcements in Boston where JetBlue flies to more nonstop destinations, operates more flights and serves more travelers than any other airline.

More Flights to Top Destinations

JetBlue will phase in more flights over the summer and fall on twelve existing Logan routes stretching across the eastern half of the United States to/from:

With JetBlueโ€™s low fares and award winning service on even more daily flights between Boston and these key markets, the airline advances its leadership position in New England and makes JetBlueโ€™s Boston focus city even more accessible to travelers across the eastern half of the U.S.

Streamlined Schedules to Key Northeast Markets

JetBlue is also introducing enhanced schedules between Boston and two top northeast corridor business markets: Washington and New York City.

JetBlue is adding up to four additional daily flights between Logan and D.C.โ€™s Reagan National Airport and will adjust its schedule to offer near-hourly weekday service โ€“ from 6 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. โ€“ between New England and the nationโ€™s capital. The new service โ€“ with Boston flights departing at the top of the hour โ€“ is aimed at meeting the growing demand for travel between the two cities while also offering a customer-friendly, straight-forward departure schedule. Flights will be phased in beginning this summer with new flights on sale starting this weekend.

Similarly, JetBlue will also introduce near-hourly weekday service between Boston and the New York metro area with service between approximately 5:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. Logan flights will depart at the bottom of the hour for one of the three major New York area airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA) or Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). As New Yorkโ€™s Hometown Airlineยฎ, JetBlueโ€™s unique service pattern is designed to meet the needs of travelers flying between Boston and anywhere across the New York metro area, whether it be Manhattan, the outer boroughs, Long Island or northern New Jersey. The flight schedule between New York and Boston will be phased in beginning this summer with new flights on sale starting this weekend.

Boston by the Numbers and Beyond

JetBlue first started service in Boston in January 2004, with 30 crewmembers, just one gate and 4,500 flights in the first year. But with the โ€˜JetBlue effectโ€™ in action, the innovative airline shook up New England with its low-fare approach, driving down prices and introducing new nonstop destinations for Logan travelers.

Today, JetBlue โ€“ with award-winning service featuring the most legroom in coach (a); free Fly-Fi, the fastest broadband internet in the sky (b); complimentary and unlimited name-brand snacks and soft drinks; free, live DIRECTVยฎ programming and 100+ channels of SiriusXMยฎ radio at every seat โ€“ carries more customers than any other airline in Boston, operates nearly 55,000 annual departures at Logan and offers nonstop service to more than 70 destinations throughout the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America. Boston is also home to some 3,400 crewmembers.

Beyond the numbers, JetBlue has also helped bring new gates to Loganโ€™s Terminal C, added the airlineโ€™s award-winning Mint premium service with lie-flat seating on a variety of routes, and introduced an array of unique destinations not served by any other airline โ€“ including recently launched flights to Havana, Cuba; Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and Palm Springs, Calif.

Later this year, JetBlue will take delivery of new, fuel-efficient A321neo aircraft, bringing another wave of cabin and comfort improvements along with additional range capabilities. Then, starting in 2020, JetBlue will also steadily replace its Embraer E190 fleet with the larger and more fuel-efficient Airbus A220, providing more seats in the market at a lower operating cost, and an improved onboard experience.

JetBlue has also built a rich portfolio of agreements with other international airlines at Logan that help connect customers to global destinations. Travelers can connect to cities around the world on JetBlue partners such as Emirates, El Al, Aer Lingus, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways.

JetBlueโ€™s commitment to Boston extends well beyond its presence at Logan. JetBlue is a proud sponsor of the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics, the Boston Bruins, the Boston Marathon, TD Garden and the New England Patriots. The local JetBlue team has also contributed thousands of hours to support numerous community organizations in the greater Boston area.

JetBlue reflects on 15 years of operations in Boston

Since its arrival in Boston in 2004, JetBlue Airways has played an instrumental role in transforming air travel for the Commonwealth and customers traveling through Boston Logan International Airport. JetBlue, which today celebrates its 15th anniversary of operations at Logan, has significantly grown its footprint in the market, leading the way in number of nonstop destinations served, customers carried and total daily departures.

JetBlueโ€™s Historic Growth in Boston

JetBlue first began service in Boston on January 7, 2004, with the airline operating about 4,500 flights from one gate in the first year. While every major U.S. airline had a sizable presence at the time, no single carrier was the clear market leader. With the โ€˜JetBlue effectโ€™ in action, the airline shook up the market with its low-fare approach, driving down prices and introducing a slew of new destinations for Logan travelers. Fast forward 15 years, JetBlue has become the leading carrier in Boston, with nearly 70 nonstop destinations served, more than 150 daily flights and close to 55,000 annual departures, making up 30 percent of Loganโ€™s overall traffic. JetBlue has also grown its roster of airline partners since entering Logan, offering up global destinations for customers on 20+ international carriers.

โ€œWhen we first entered Boston, JetBlue was very young. Fifteen years later, itโ€™s exciting to see how far weโ€™ve come and where weโ€™re heading,โ€ said Marty St. George, executive vice president of commercial and planning, JetBlue. โ€œBoston is our home, and weโ€™re committed to providing the low fares, award-winning service and amenities that have made JetBlue the number one choice for travel at Logan.โ€

โ€œMassport applauds JetBlue for their 15 years of offering exciting travel opportunities for the entire New England region,โ€ said John Pranckevicius, acting CEO, Massport. โ€œWe look forward to continuing our strong partnership with JetBlue while providing our business and leisure customers with even more options for travel in the future.โ€

JetBlue in the Community

JetBlue prides itself on supporting the causes, teams and places its customers and crewmembers are most passionate about. Since 2011, JetBlue crewmembers have contributed more than 48,500 hours of service to a variety of causes and nonprofits throughout New England, such as KaBOOM!, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Wings for Autismยฎ and Make-A-Wishยฎ Massachusetts and Rhode Island, among many others.

JetBlue is also the proud official airline sponsor for all four major sports teams including the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins and New England Patriots, along with the annual Boston Marathon and venues including TD Garden, The Wang Theatre, The Shubert Theatre and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Looking Ahead

JetBlue is on track to reach 200 daily departures in the coming years. Working closely with Massport, the airline continues to make investments to maintain its leadership position in its second-largest focus city. JetBlue plans to expand its footprint from 24 to 30 gates by 2021. Starting in 2020, JetBlue will also steadily replace its Embraer E190 fleet with the larger and more fuel-efficient Airbus A220, providing more seats in the market at a lower operating cost.

Delta adds more key markets for Boston customers: Chicago, Cleveland, Newark and Washington, D.C.
