Garuda Indonesia opens the Denpasar (Bali) – Guangzhou, China route

Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) is expanding into China. The flag carrier made this announcement:

As part of its continuous network expansion program, particularly of the Chinese market, Garuda Indonesia on Sunday, November 22, officially launched a direct flight from Denpasar to Guangzhou, China and return.

Garuda Indonesia flies the Denpasar – Guangzhou (GA 896) route three (3) times a week, every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday with a departure from Denpasar scheduled at 23:45 WITA and arriving in Guangzhou at 05:00 LT (local time). Meanwhile, the Guangzhou – Denpasar route (GA 897) is flown every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Departure time from Guangzhou is at 06:15 LT and arrives in Denpasar at 12:00 WITA. On this new route, Garuda operates a Boeing 737-800 NG with a capacity of 12 passengers in business class and 150 passengers in economy class.

Garuda Indonesia’s Director of Services, Nicodemus P. Lampe said that the Denpasar – Guangzhou vv service is part of the airlines network expansion strategy, especially to China. China is a very important market for Garuda Indonesia and the Airline will continue to develop services to this country, explained Nicodemus.

With the launching of this new Denpasar Guangzhou service, Garuda now flies to China 24 times a week, to Shanghai – Jakarta vv (7 times), Beijing – Jakarta vv (4 times), Beijing – Denpasar vv (3 times), Guangzhou – Jakarta vv (7 times) and the newest service, Denpasar – Guangzhou Denpasar vv (3 times), added Nicodemus.

Now, more than ever, Garuda Indonesia is ready to cash in on the huge potential Chinese market, as Chinese tourists visiting Indonesia between January-August 2015 reached 489,233 tourists or an increase of 25.56 percent compared to the same period in 2014, which only reached 389,627 tourists, added Nicodemus.

Apart from flying to Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, Garuda Indonesia also flies 21 times a week to Hong Kong, including Hong Kong – Jakarta vv (14 times) and Hong Kong – Denpasar vv (7 times).

Garuda Indonesia takes delivery of a Boeing 777-300 in the SkyTeam livery

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) yesterday (October 28) delivered the pictured 777-3U3 ER (Extended Range) registered as PK-GII (msn 29145) to Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) in the SkyTeam livery.

Garuda Indonesia became the 20th member to join the SkyTeam Alliance in August 2014, providing access to an extensive global network with more than 16,320 daily flights to 1,052 destinations in 177 countries. The Indonesian flag carrier currently operates more than 90 Boeing airplanes, including Next-Generation 737s, 777-300 ERs and 747-400s.

Garuda Indonesia, the national airline of Indonesia, connects more than 75 destinations worldwide with close to 600 daily flights and a fleet of 174 aircraft with the average age of which is less than five years old.

Garuda Indonesia signs LOI for 30 Airbus A350-900 XWB aircraft

Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) continues to show its intent to order new airliners, now with both Airbus and Boeing. Following the Boeing intent, the carrier has now signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Airbus for the purchase of 30 A350-900 XWB aircraft.

Garuda Indonesia plans to use the A350-900 XWB to develop its medium and long haul network, with the aircraft offering the ability to fly non-stop from Jakarta or Bali to Europe.

The A350 XWB has been especially successful in the Asia-Pacific region, where airlines have ordered a total of 244 aircraft, representing almost a third of the 780 orders recorded so far worldwide.

Garuda Indonesia to acquire 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and up to 30 737 MAX 8 airplanes

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) announced today (June 15) the airline’s intent to purchase 30 787-9 Dreamliners, as well as up to 30 737 MAX 8 airplanes.

Boeing will work with Garuda Indonesia to finalize the order, at which time it will be posted to Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.

In addition to the announcement today, the flag carrier also reconfirmed its intent to purchase 50 737 MAX 8s, originally announced in October 2014. The airline currently operates more than 90 Boeing airplanes, including Next-Generation versions of the 737, 777-300ERs and 747-400s.

New video from FlightTravels: Garuda Indonesia flight experience from Jakarta to Singapore, onboard PK-GNG, a Boeing 737-8U3 with Boeing Sky Interior cabin.

Even with the gloomy weather at Jakarta, the flight experience was a very pleasant experience. Garuda Indonesia hospitality began at boarding with the cabin crew warmly welcoming passengers with a traditional clasped hands greeting.

After ascending above the dark clouds, the view up above is very bright and welcoming. I decided on Indonesian style rice for my meal and it was a delicious choice. What a cultural bliss to be able to pair tasty Indonesian cuisine with a good Indonesian movie!

During landing, I am happy to be treated to Singapore’s metropolitan cityscape.

Garuda Indonesia orders 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s

Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) and Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) announced an order for 50 737 MAX 8s, valued at $4.9 billion at current list prices. The flag carrier of Indonesia will purchase 46 737 MAX 8s and will convert existing orders for four Next-Generation 737-800s to 737 MAX 8s. The order was previously accounted for on Boeing’s Orders and Deliveries Web site, attributed to an unidentified customer.

Garuda Indonesia currently operates 77 Boeing 737s. The new order gives the airline the flexibility to grow and to update its fleet as the market demands.

According to Boeing, “The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. The 737 MAX will be 14 percent more fuel-efficient than today’s most efficient Next-Generation 737s – and 20 percent better than the original Next-Generation 737s when they first entered service. The 737 MAX 8 will have an 8 percent per seat operating cost advantage over the A320neo.”

The total number of 737 MAX orders to date is 2,295 airplanes from 47 customers worldwide.

Garuda Indonesia now plans to operate the last Boeing 747-400 revenue flight on January 14, 2015

Garuda Indonesia‘s (Jakarta) Boeing 747-400 fleet has dwindled down to just two aircraft. The airline has been using the aging type on mainly pilgrimage flights from Jakarta, Makassar and Medan, Indonesia to and from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to Airline Route, the carrier will extend the life of the last two Jumbos until January 14, 2015 on the Jeddah-Jakarta route. Subject to another change, flight GA 9893 is likely to be the last revenue flight on this last route on January 14, 2015.

Garuda Indonesia extends the Jakarta-Amsterdam route to London Gatwick today

Garuda Indonesia Airways (Jakarta) is extending its presence in Europe by launching a new service from Jakarta to London (Gatwick) via Amsterdam today (September 8), as part of the airline’s transformation program “The Quantum Leap 2011-2015”. London serves as the airline’s second gateway in the region after Amsterdam. By launching the five times weekly service to London, Garuda Indonesia is now able to provide the first direct link between Indonesia and the United Kingdom.

Therefore, starting today, the Jakarta – Amsterdam – Jakarta flight changed to become Jakarta – Amsterdam – London (Gatwick) – Amsterdam – Jakarta.

The new service will be operated by Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft capable of carrying 314 passengers, in a three-class cabin configuration featuring its globally praised First Class, brand new business class service concept, and the world’s best economy class (Skytrax Global Airline Awards 2013).

According to the airline, “the fleet is equipped with “Inflight Connectivity” facilities, including “WiFi Onboard” and “Live TV” services for passengers in all classes and a “chef on board” for “First Class” passengers. The “Inflight Connectivity” facilities enable passengers to remain connected to the internet and continue their business activities during the flight or simply access their favorite entertainment, such as live soccer games via the sports channel, and many other entertainment options.”

Following its entrance into the SkyTeam global airline alliance on March 2014, Garuda has decided to make Amsterdam, The Netherlands, its hub for Europe and beyond. In order to make this hub effective and most convenient for its customers, the airline started flying direct and nonstop between Jakarta and Amsterdam on May 30, 2014.

Garuda Indonesia joined SkyTeam global alliance as its 20th international member, and second Southeast Asia member.

Garuda Indonesia slows down international growth as its losses increase

Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) according to the Jakarta Post “is canceling this year’s plans to open two new international routes; Jakarta–Manila and Jakarta–Mumbai, as the company suffered from increasing losses during the first half of this year, a Garuda senior executive said.

As previously reported, the state-owned enterprise recorded a loss of $211 million from January to June, almost 20 times greater than a $10.92 million loss booked in the same period last year.”

The company will drop the Jakarta-Taipei route on August 10.

Garuda Indonesia started flying nonstop flights between Jakarta and Amsterdam on May 30, 2014 using its brand new Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft (pictured above).

Garuda Indonesia restores the Jakarta-Tokyo Haneda route

Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) on June 15, 2014 officially restored the Jakarta – Tokyo (Haneda) route to meet market demand and broaden its flight network.

For Garuda Indonesia, the occasion signifies an important moment in history as its echoes the airline’s first flight from Indonesia to Japan on March 13, 1962 which departed from the old Kemayoran Airport in Jakarta for Haneda Airport in Tokyo via Hong Kong, using a Lockheed 188 Electra.

The Jakarta – Haneda daily flight schedule departs from Jakarta at 13.05 (Local Time) and arrives in Haneda at 22.35 (Local Time). On the return flight, GA 875 departs from Haneda at 00.30 (Local Time) and arrives in Jakarta at 06.00 WIB. To serve the restored Jakarta-Haneda service, Garuda Indonesia operates the Airbus A330-300 on the route that features a two class layout; business class with a seat capacity of 36 passengers and economy class for 215 passengers.

With the opening of the Jakarta – Haneda direct service, Garuda Indonesia currently serves 39 weekly flights to Japan, including the Jakarta – Osaka (Kansai), Denpasar – Osaka (Kansai), Jakarta – Tokyo (Narita), Denpasar – Tokyo (Narita), Denpasar – Tokyo (Haneda), and Jakarta – Tokyo (Haneda).

Through the codeshare agreement with ANA-All Nippon Airways, Garuda Indonesia passengers will be able to fly with ANA to various large cities in Japan, such as Fukuoka, Saporro and Okinawa.

In addition, the opening of the Jakarta – Haneda service will offer Garuda Indonesia passengers the choice to continue their journey to Los Angeles and Seattle/Tacoma with Garuda Indonesia and Delta Airlines codesharing flights.

The launching of the Jakarta – Haneda direct service is part of the airline’s “network” expansion program, especially in the international sector, following Garuda Indonesia’s official entry into the “SkyTeam” global alliance.

As a SkyTeam member, Garuda Indonesia can now expand its service network to 1,064 destination cities in 178 countries that are served by SkyTeam member airlines, which constitutes more than 90% of the world’s air traffic, with up to 15 thousand flights per day.

In line with Garuda Indonesia’s continuous expansion through the airline’s “Quantum Leap 2011-2015” long-term program, in 2014, Garuda Indonesia plans to purchase as many as 27 new airplanes, consisting of two Boeing 777-300s, four Airbus A330s, twelve Boeing 737-800s, three Bombardier CRJs, and six ATR 72-600s.
