British Airways to end service to Almaty and Entebbe

British Airways (London) is dropping two long-haul routes from its London Heathrow hub. The flag carrier will drop service to Almaty (Kazakhstan) on October 11 and Entebbe (Uganda) on October 2 (both dates are for LHR departures) per Airline Route. Both routes are served with Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft.

British Airways unveils its “GREAT Festival of Creativity in Shanghai” special livery on G-YMML

British Airways (London) today rolled out at London Heathrow its brand new promotional livery on this Boeing 777-236 ER registered as G-YMML (msn 30313). The airline issued this statement about the new design:

“BA’s paint bay teams have brought a fantastic design, created by Chinese fashion designer Masha Ma, to life.

The Boeing 777-200 is a centrepiece of the airline’s contribution to the GREAT Festival of Creativity in Shanghai.

The design by Ma on the Boeing 777-200 aircraft, depicts a bamboo and a rose in an east-meets-west fusion of symbols and artistic styles.

The Engineering team used specialist techniques to paint the aircraft with Ma’s design which combines a western impressionistic style with Chinese ink-and-wash painting techniques. The design took 2,472 manhours and 186 individual stencils to apply.

The festival, which runs from March 2 to 4 at the Long Museum in Shanghai, is part of the GREAT Britain campaign aimed at promoting the UK as a world-class destination for trade, tourism, investment and education to generate jobs and growth”.

SAS sells another slot pair at London Heathrow Airport

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS (Stockholm) has sold another slot pair at London’s slot-controlled Heathrow Airport. The airline issued this statement:

SAS has entered into a slot transaction with Turkish Airlines that will take over one afternoon slot-pair at London Heathrow from SAS at the beginning of the winter traffic program on October 25, 2015.

The transaction will generate a positive earnings impact of $22 million for SAS to be accounted for during the second quarter with a corresponding cash effect during calendar year 2015.

As part of creating balance between frequencies and capacity during the day and following the disposition of a morning slot-pair earlier in February 2015, SAS has entered into a second slot-pair transaction. Following this transaction, SAS will have 19 daily slot-pairs at London Heathrow and will still be the fifth largest airline operating at London Heathrow, measured in number of weekly departures. After this transaction, SAS does not have any plans to reduce its portfolio of slots.

SAS currently operates from London Heathrow to Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo, Stockholm and Stavanger. SAS will continue to offer a strong and comprehensive network between Scandinavia and London Heathrow with the intention to keep the seat capacity to/from London Heathrow unchanged through the use of larger aircraft on remaining departures. As noted earlier in February 2015, SAS will consider the use of other airports in the London-region.

Following this transaction, Turkish Airlines will have 38 weekly slot-pairs at London Heathrow Airport.

SAS to sell a slot-pair at London Heathrow Airport

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS (Stockholm) has announced it has entered into a slot transaction with a major unnamed international air carrier that will take over one slot-pair at London Heathrow from SAS at the beginning of the summer traffic program on March 29, 2015.

The airline continued;

The transaction will generate a positive earnings impact of the equivalent of $60 million for SAS to be accounted for during the second quarter of the fiscal year 2014/2015 with a corresponding cash effect during the fiscal year 2014/2015.

SAS is the fifth largest airline operating at London Heathrow measured in number of departures and had before this transaction 21 daily slot-pairs at London Heathrow, which now will be reduced to 20 daily slot-pairs.

SAS operates from London Heathrow to Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo, Stockholm and Stavanger. Even after the transaction, SAS will continue to offer a strong and comprehensive network between Scandinavia and London Heathrow. The intention is to keep the seat capacity to/from London Heathrow through the use of larger aircraft on remaining departures. Furthermore, SAS will consider the use of other airports in the London-region.

Virgin Atlantic to bring the Boeing 787-9 to Los Angeles

Virgin Atlantic Airways (London) will introduce the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the daily London (Heathrow) – Los Angeles route on April 30, 2015 per Airline Route.

Delta opens its exclusive Delta Arrival Lounge at London Heathrow’s Terminal 3

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) has issued this statement about their new Delta Arrivals Lounge at London Heathrow:

Delta Air Lines has opened its exclusive Delta Arrivals Lounge, at the arrivals hall of London Heathrow Terminal 3. All of Delta’s BusinessElite passengers and SkyMiles Diamond and Platinum Medallion members arriving from the United States have complimentary access into the new facility.

The Arrivals Lounge offers a number of amenities tailored to suit customers arriving in London from overnight flights. Customers are invited to freshen up in one of eleven private showers featuring amenities by New York’s Malin+Goetz and take advantage of on-site butler services including clothes press and shoe shine.

Meanwhile, multiple breakfast offerings are available including Starbucks Coffee, lighter fare such as fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt and cereals and prepared to order a la carte items. Wi-Fi is available throughout the Arrivals Lounge, plus a business center and a selection of the day’s newspapers. Staff are also on hand to assist with any future Delta travel plans.

BusinessElite customers also have private car access to the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Wing on departure at Terminal 3, which enables them to go from car to Clubhouse in less than 10 minutes. The pre-booked service allows passengers to use the Private Security Channel, beating the queues and leaving more time prior to boarding.

Last month, Delta announced it will begin flying nonstop between Philadelphia and Heathrow in April 2015, alongside its new flights from Seattle/Tacoma and Los Angeles to London Heathrow.

The Delta Arrivals Lounge will be open daily from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Virgin Atlantic to add a second daily seasonal flight to Miami

Virgin Atlantic Airways (London) is adding a second daily flight to Miami for the winter season 2015/2016. The second flight, operated with Airbus A330-300 aircraft, will start on October 25, 2015 from London (Heathrow) per Airline Route. The second flight will compliment the daily Boeing 747-400 flight.

Royal Jordanian inaugurates Boeing 787 service, outlines planned routes

Royal Jordanian Airlines’ (Amman) first Boeing 787 had its inaugural flight on September 1 from its base at Queen Alia International Airport to London Heathrow, thus starting its regular operations.

Chairman of the Board/President & CEO Nasser Lozi wished the passengers an enjoyable journey on board the Dreamliner’s first flight from Jordan, and expressed RJ’s delight to have in its fleet the 787, an aircraft that has state-of-the-art features and high specifications.

He said the new addition to the fleet is the first of five that will join the RJ fleet during this year as part of the company’s strategic plan to modernize its long-range fleet of aircraft, replacing the currently operating Airbus A340s and A330s.

With this aircraft that was received on August 27, 2014, Royal Jordanian becomes only the second airline in the Middle East to operate the 787.

The passengers flying to London expressed their excitement to fly onboard the Dreamliner, being one of the most advanced airliners. They also valued Royal Jordanian’s keenness to offer passengers superb in-flight services.

Royal Jordanian is the first airline worldwide to take delivery of a Boeing 787 with the latest Thales in-Flight entertainment system called AVANT. The system offers passengers the next level of in-flight entertainment with 17” touchscreens in Crown and 10.6” touchscreens in Economy Class.

The 787 will provide Royal Jordanian with unrivaled fuel efficiency, using 20 per cent less fuel than today’s similarly sized airplanes. RJ chose to configure its Dreamliner to carry 24 passengers in business class and 246 in economy.

Customers in all classes will experience an improved cabin environment featuring LED mood lighting, larger windows, bigger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems and reduced noise levels among other features.

Besides, London Heathrow, Royal Jordanian is introducing the new type to Chicago (O’Hare) (staring November 30), Detroit (starting December 1), Dubai (staring October 29), Montreal (starting December 1) and New York (JFK) (starting December 2).

Effective October 26 the company will also fly the new type to Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jeddah and Kuala Lumpur per Airline Route.

Virgin Atlantic to introduce the new Boeing 787-9 on the Boston route

Virgin Atlantic Airways (London) has announced it will introduce its new 264-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the London (Heathrow)-Boston (Logan) route on October 28. The first 787 is due in September with 16 on order. After BOS, the 787 will be deployed to other U.S. East Coast cities from London. London Heathrow-Washington Dulles 787 service will start on December 17 and London Heathrow-New York JFK will follow on February 28, 2015.

We’re delighted to reveal the plans for our new $5 billion Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, continuing our investment in our customer experience. Flying from ‘old’ England to New England, the aircraft’s first route will be between London Heathrow and Boston, with the service scheduled to start on October 28 and fly six times a week.

It’s 30 years since Sir Richard Branson took Virgin Atlantic’s inaugural flight across the Atlantic from London Heathrow to New York Newark on the June 22, 1984. To celebrate this 30th milestone, the new 787 aircraft is named ‘Birthday Girl’ and features some very special paintwork. For the first time ever, our iconic Virgin Atlantic ‘Flying Lady’ will be displayed face on – and she is carrying a celebratory champagne flute!

Setting the bar

After the Boston launch, we’ll deploy our Dreamliners on other key London to US East Coast markets initially, with subsequent services between Heathrow and Washington, Heathrow and Newark and Heathrow and New York JFK scheduled to start in the following five months. As the fleet grows, the aircraft will also benefit passengers on longer-haul routes where the on-board experience and fuel efficiency benefits are even further amplified.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming this aircraft to our fleet,” said our chief executive Craig Kreeger.

“For the last 30 years we’ve been proudly serving and delighting our customers and we know the Dreamliner will set us the bar to take that even further, bringing with it new innovations and a cutting edge product for them to enjoy.”

“The 787-9 will represent over half of our fleet by 2018, which demonstrates our commitment to the Dreamliner as the centrepiece of our future fleet. We’re looking forward to the next 30 years.”

Virgin Atlantic will be the first European carrier to take the larger Boeing 787-9 version of the Dreamliner, with the first aircraft planned for delivery in late September. Our aircraft will initially be configured with 31 Upper Class, 35 Premium Economy and 198 Economy seats.

Upper Class passengers will enjoy a new iteration of our ‘Upper Class Suite’ which incorporates all of the popular features of this, along with some new design elements. There is a refreshed Premium Economy cabin with an even more comfortable seat design and a social space where customers can stretch their legs and mingle with other passengers – the Wander Wall. Economy seats will be best-in-class with the Recaro 3620 model. Passengers throughout the aircraft will benefit from access to wifi connectivity, with the latest in in-flight entertainment, and dynamic mood lighting throughout.

New efficiencies

As well as the passenger benefits, the Boeing 787-9 will bring us major commercial and environmental benefits. Radically improved fuel efficiency means it is 21% more efficient on a per flight bases than the equivalent sized aircraft in our fleet, allowing it to be a major driver of both our return to profitability and our commitment to improve carbon efficiency by 30% before 2020.

It also has a 60% smaller noise footprint than aircraft of a comparable size, meaning large areas around Heathrow airport will be less affected by our operations with these aircraft. The 787-9 is key in achieving the industry leading commitments we set out in our Noise Management Strategy last autumn.

Air Canada moves into Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 2

Air Canada (Montreal) yesterday (June 18) moved into the new Terminal 2 joining United Airlines at London’s Heathrow Airport. Air China and ANA also made the move. The airline issued this statement.

The arrival of Air Canada flight AC 856 from Toronto (Pearson) at 07:04 GMT marked the official move of all Air Canada flights and operations to London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal. The modern and spacious facilities of Heathrow Airport’s new terminal provide customers with an improved travel experience including faster customs and immigration border control upon arrival and check-in and security clearance on departure. Eligible Air Canada and Star Alliance customers will have access to Air Canada’s newest international Maple Leaf Lounge also offering a stylish and inspiring environment in which to relax or work before a flight.

Air Canada check-in and baggage drop off are located in Zone A of the check-in lobby and offer the latest technology including quick and easy self-service kiosks, fast baggage drop-off and dedicated full-service check-in counters. The new terminal provides a wide variety of shopping, dining and seating options in a light, airy and spacious building.
