The first Eurowings Airbus A320 enters revenue service

Eurowings A320-200 D-AIZQ (15)(Grd) HAM (Lufthansa)(LRW)

Eurowings (Dusseldorf) placed its first Airbus A320 in the new livery into revenue service yesterday (February 1) between Hamburg and Prague. The Lufthansa Group issued this statement and photo for its expanding subsidiary:

Eurowings (2014) logo (large)

The new Eurowings will took off on its maiden flight on Sunday, 1 February 2015. An Airbus A320 with the tail number D-AIZQ and in the new livery left Hamburg at 10.55 a.m. and flew to Prague, where landed at 12.00 p.m. The aircraft, which carries 162 passengers, is the first Airbus A320 in the Eurowings fleet. Further aircraft will follow in the coming weeks. A total of 23 Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets are being replaced by Airbus A320s.

By starting to renew the Eurowings fleet with Airbus A320s in the new branding, another important milestone has been reached in the implementation of the WINGS concept. The range of services oriented to leisure travel under the Eurowings brand allows the Lufthansa Group to open up new customer potential. The airline group is also safeguarding its leading position in point-to-point connections in its German, Austrian, Swiss and Belgian home markets in the long term.

To start with, the flights will continue to be operated on behalf of Germanwings under Germanwings flight numbers. By the end of 2015, Eurowings and Germanwings along with other European airlines are to be united under the Eurowings brand name and should acquire new customers by offering low-cost short- and long-haul services, in doing so providing quality at low prices.

Cyprus Airways (Larnaca) yesterday (January 9) ceased all operations after nearly 68 years and will be liquidated. The decision to shut down came after the European Commission ordered the airline to pay back overย โ‚ฌ65 million ($77 million) in what was deemed to be illegal state aid. The EC has been investigating this controversial state aid since February 2014 and the flag carrier has been struggling to reorganize and to continue operations.

Cyprus Airways commenced operations on October 6, 1947.

The airline issued this statement:

In the context of the above decision all operations of the company will be suspended as of the close of business January 9.

Cyprus Airways would like to warmly thank the millions of passengers who flew with the airline over the years, for their choice and support. The government of Cyprus announced that it has decided to offer alternative arrangements to all passengers who have Cyprus Airways tickets. The cost of all alternative arrangements will be undertaken by the Republic.

The affected passengers of Cyprus Airways, who have arranged their travel with departure days up to and until 9/2/2015, can immediately contact the travel agency Top Kinisis Travel Public at the national telephone number 77787878, or if they are calling from overseas at the telephone number +357 22869999, in order to arrange for the issuance of a new flight ticket. In other news, Lufthansa is changing its takeoff procedures across Germany:

In the twelve months since August 2013, Lufthansa has been carrying out trials on the noise emissions produced by the 1,000 foot acceleration procedure. In the new procedure, the aircraft leaving the west runway at Frankfurt Airport reduced the altitude for acceleration and additional thrust from 1,500 feet (approx. 457 meters) to 1,000 feet (approx. 305 meters) where allowed by local restrictions on the departure flight path. During the worldโ€™s biggest examination of take-off noise, the measuring stations recorded over 70,000 Lufthansa take-offs. This represents more than half of all the airlineโ€™s departures in Frankfurt. The data were analyzed by Forum Flughafen and the local region, which could not identify any significant changes in noise emissions as a result of the modified take-off procedure. The measurements support the existing detailed calculations carried out as part of a scientific study by Lufthansa, TU Berlin and the German Aerospace Center. On this basis Lufthansa has now decided to introduce the modified take-off procedure nationwide as of today and so to implement this established global standard worldwide. Many other airlines have been using this take-off procedure for years, making it common practice already at most German and international airports, because the related fuel consumption and carbon emissions are much lower. The change in the acceleration altitude to 1,000 feet took place in accordance with the standards laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Lufthansa obtained permission to modify its procedure from the German Federal Aviation Authority and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) some time ago.

What does 1000-foot acceleration mean?

After an aircraft takes off from the runway, it usually ascends at a constant speed with the flaps extended until it reaches a certain altitude. Modern aircraft generally do not use the maximum thrust available at this point, but rather a reduced level of take-off thrust. When the aircraft reaches an initial target altitude, the enginesโ€™ thrust switches to climb thrust. As the aircraft continues to take off, it has to accelerate so that the flaps can be retracted and it can climb to its cruising altitude at a higher speed. The altitude at which the speed increase begins is called the acceleration altitude. By changing these two altitudes, the wind resistance decreases when the flaps are retracted, thus lowering fuel consumption. Lufthansa believes that changing the procedure in Germany alone would save around 3,000 tonnes of fuel per year. This would mean around 10,000 tonnes fewer CO2 emissions. The benefit for the environment is much greater worldwide: approx. 6,000 tons less kerosene, or around 19,000 tons less CO2.

Aegean Airlines orders two more Airbus A320s

Aegean Airlines (Athens) has signed a firm contract with Airbus for two additional A320 (A320ceo) aircraft, adding to a previous order for five A320s aircraft placed in September 2007.

All aircraft will be equipped with Airbus โ€œSharkletโ€ fuel saving wing tip devices and will be powered by IAE V2500 engines. The aircraft will also be the first A320s in Aegeanโ€™s fleet to feature the enhanced take-off weight capability of up to 78 tons, thus enabling the carrier to expand its route network with even longer range operations.

Aegean Airlines operates an all-Airbus single-aisle fleet of 36 Airbus A320 family aircraft including 17 directly purchased aircraft.
