Lufthansa wishes Munich Airport a Happy 25th Birthday

Lufthansa issued this statement:

โ€œHappy Birthday!ย  25 Years Munich Airport.โ€ This is the branded message a Lufthansa Airbus will be carrying throughout Europe. The plane can also be seen on Saturday, May 20 during Family Day – the airportโ€™s big birthday celebration suitable for the whole family. The message will stay on the Airbus A320-214 with the registration D-AIUQ (msn 6947) until fall. โ€œWe have chosen this unusual birthday greeting because we are celebrating a shared 25-year success story. The growth of Lufthansa in Munich is closely connected with that of the airport. Such a close partnership is unique worldwide,โ€ says Wilken Bormann, CEO of Hub Munich.

Shared history

The partnership between Lufthansa and Munich Airport goes back to the very beginning. On May 17, 1992 a Lufthansa Boeing 737 was the last aircraft to depart from the airport in Riem, shortly before 11:00 PM. The following morning, two Lufthansa planes, named โ€œErdingโ€ and โ€œFreisingโ€, landed at the same time on the south and north runways of Munich Airport. The first plane to takeoff at the new airport also bore the Lufthansa logo: on the next day, at 5:59 AM, a Boeing 747 took off on an Alpine scenic flight carrying honored guests.

The first steps in developing the future Lufthansa hub in Munich were taken as early as in1995 with the deployment of two long-haul Airbus A340 aircraft. Three years later, the Lufthansa management board approved the airlineโ€™s involvement in what would eventually become Terminal 2. For the first time, an airline and an airport were planning, financing, and building a terminal together. The terminal building opened in 2003, fully tailoring to the needs of transfer passengers. Terminal 2 laid the foundation for more rapid development at the Munich Hub. Just one year after opening, it hosted its ten millionth passenger. In 2010, the supervisory boards of Flughafen Mรผnchen GmbH (FMG) and Lufthansa approved an expansion in the form of a satellite building, which opened in April 2016. Since then, Terminal 2 has the capacity to handle 36 million passengers. Another milestone followed in February 2017 โ€“ as Lufthansa and Munich Airport welcomed the first A350. In the future, 15 of these most modern and environmentally friendly long-haul aircraft will be based at the Munich Lufthansa hub. Shortly afterwards, the next joint success followed: Munich Airportโ€™s Terminal 2 was named the best terminal in the world at the London Skytrax Instituteโ€™s 2017 World Airport Awards.

Lufthansa puts its 2016 Boeing 737-300 “Fanhansa” into regular service

https://airlinersgallery.smugmug.com/Airlines-Europe-2/Airlines-Europe-2/Lufthansa/i-wnKPjdL/A

After flying the German soccer team to Chambery, France on June 6, 2016, the first regular flight of D-ABEK in the 2016 version of Fanhansa was Frankfurt – Munich on June 7, 2016.

Lufthansa issued this statement on June 6, 2016:

The German national team departed from Frankfurt Airport on June 6, 2016 with Lufthansa special flight LH342 for the European Championship in France. At exactly 14:02 local time, the โ€œFanhansaโ€ aircraft, with Captain Ulrich Pade and First Officer Rafael Gabel in the !+$%pit, took off from runway 18 West after having left parking position at 13:49 local time. On board were the national team, coaches and team staff as well as other DFB (German Football Association) representatives. The flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to Chambery Savoie Airport (CMF) near the team accommodation takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Last week, the Boeing 737-300 aircraft type with the registration D-ABEK received special livery from Lufthansa Technik for the occasion. In addition to the well-known โ€œFanhansaโ€ logo from the 2014 World Cup, the names of fans now decorate the aircraftโ€™s fuselage. Among more than 65,000 online applications, around 300 winners were drawn to symbolically accompany the national team on their flight to the European Championship.

In regular service, the aircraft has 140 seats in Business and Economy Class. For the special flight, the entire cabin is set-up in business-class standard. The catering on board has been tailored to the needs of athletes: Sandwiches with beef pastrami or vegetarian ones with cream cheese, a colorful fruit plate and the entire range of nonalcoholic beverages available on Lufthansa flights.

For the first time in 2014, on the occasion of the World Cup in Brazil, Lufthansa traded its name for “Fanhansa” on the fuselage of part of the fleet and for a limited time. The climax of the campaign was the โ€œFanhansa Siegerfliegerโ€ which flew the newly crowned world champions from Rio de Janeiro to Berlin. The Boeing 747-8 still delights on its flights around the world and will continue to fly until the World Cup in 2018.

Lufthansa is engaged as the “Airline for sport” for many popular sports. In addition to the long-standing cooperation with the German Football Association (since 2005), Lufthansa also works with FC Bayern Mรผnchen (since 2004) and Eintracht Frankfurt (since 2008) football clubs. In addition, the airline is a national sponsor for the German Sports Aid and is a longstanding partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
