Alitalia to start twice-weekly Venice-Tokyo (Narita) flights on April 2, 2014

Alitalia (2nd) (Rome) on April 2, 2014 will launch a new twice-weekly route linking Venice with Tokyo (Narita). The new route will be operated with Boeing 777-200 ERs according to Airline Route.

In other news, Italian transport minister Maurizio Lupi expects Air France-KLM to strongly reaffirm the value of Alitalia and strengthen its role according to a report by Reuters. AF-KL own 25 percent of AZ and will soon announce its intention with the Italian flag carrier.

Alitalia (2nd):

Spring Airlines Japan to now launch operations in late 2013 or early 2014

Spring Airlines Japan (Tokyo-Narita) as the new low-cost subsidiary of Spring Airlines (Shanghai), has been approved by Japan’s MLIT for a launch of scheduled passenger operations. However the new airline is now planning to commence operations in late 2013 or early 2014 according to CAPA. The new airline is planning to operate domestic routes initially from Narita Airport to Hiroshima, Kumamoto and Takamatsu. The airline previously was hoping to start operations in the spring of 2013 and the first Boeing 737-800 was prepared for delivery.

Spring Airlines is the largest low-cost carrier in China and operates over 50 international and domestic routes covering a network of more than 30 cities across China, Japan and Thailand. Spring Airlines is the aviation subsidiary of Shanghai Spring International Travel Service.

Boeing proposes a 787 battery fix to the FAA

Boeing (Chicago) yesterday proposed a fix to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) concerning the 787 battery fires according to this report by Reuters. However investigators have not yet determined what caused two batteries to overheat last month. All 787s remain grounded.

United Airlines:

Japan Airlines to operate the Tokyo Narita-San Diego route again on January 30

JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo) will operate a Boeing 777 flight on the Tokyo (Narita)-San Diego route on January 30. It is unclear at this time if the flight will continue beyond this single roundtrip flight. The route has been suspended since the Boeing 787-8 was grounded.

JAL’s grounded Boeing 787 Dreamliner leaks fuel in tests in Tokyo

JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo) stated yesterday (January 13) its Boeing 787 Dreamliner involved in the fuel leak (second incident) at Boston last week and undergoing safety checks in Tokyo had leaked fuel again during tests according to this report by Reuters.

According to Reuters, “An open valve on the aircraft caused fuel to leak from a nozzle on the left wing used to remove fuel, a company spokeswoman said. The jet is out of service after spilling about 40 gallons (roughly 150 liters) of fuel onto the airport taxiway in Boston due to a separate valve-related problem.”

Meanwhile Japan’s transport ministry has launched an investigation into the fuel leaks. The FAA and Boeing continue their investigations into the mishaps of the 787.

On January 10 after the first Boston incident involving a fire on another Dreamliner on January 7, 2013, JAL stated:

“Japan Airlines initiated and completed inspections on all other Boeing 787 aircraft in its fleet the following the (first) incident at Boston and found no irregularities.

We sincerely apologize for the concern and inconvenience caused to our valuable customers.

Safety is of utmost importance to Japan Airlines and we will continue striving to ensure safe operations of each and every flight, and on all our aircraft types including the 787 Dreamliner. Please be assured on your future travel with us.”

Boeing issued this statement on its involvement with the FAA on the safety review of the 787:

Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Jim McNerney issued the following statement after U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta announced that the FAA and Boeing will start a review of the 787’s recent issues and critical systems:

“Boeing shares the same commitment to air travel safety that Transportation Secretary LaHood and FAA Administrator Huerta spoke of this morning in Washington, D.C. We also stand 100 percent behind the integrity of the 787 and the rigorous process that led to its successful certification and entry into service. We look forward to participating in the joint review with the FAA, and we believe it will underscore our confidence, and the confidence of our customers and the traveling public, in the reliability, safety and performance of the innovative, new 787 Dreamliner.”

JAL-Japan Airlines:

Nippon Cargo Airlines is coming to Dallas/Fort Worth

Nippon Cargo Airlines-NCA (Tokyo) has announced it will launch new freighter flights connecting Tokyo’s Narita International Airport and DFW International Airport, starting November 5. Nippon Cargo’s twice weekly flights will be the first direct freighter connections for the Dallas/Fort Worth area into Japan, and will bolster DFW cargo lift capacity to Asia while also providing a new connection to a strategically important destination.

Nippon Cargo Airlines will operate the route from Tokyo Narita to Chicago O’Hare, then to DFW Airport, Anchorage, Alaska, and then back to Narita. Nippon Cargo Airlines will fly 747-400 aircraft on the route, and the carrier ultimately plans to phase-in 747-8’s, the most fuel-efficient planes in the industry.

NCA-Nippon Cargo Airlines:

United announces its first international routes for the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

United Airlines (Chicago) has announced the first international routes for the airline’s newest addition to its fleet, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. In addition to the previously-announced service from its Denver hub to Tokyo Narita, starting on March 31, 2013, the airline will operate nonstop 787 service five days a week between its Houston (Bush Intercontinental) hub and Lagos, Nigeria, beginning on January 7, 2013. United will also operate daily, nonstop 787 service between its Los Angeles hub and its Tokyo Narita hub, beginning on January 3, 2013, and Los Angeles to Shanghai, beginning on March 30, 2013.

United will also operate daily, nonstop 787 service from its Houston hub to Amsterdam and London Heathrow on a temporary basis. Houston to Amsterdam service begins on December 4, 2012, and Houston to London Heathrow service begins on February 4, 2013.

The 787 aircraft will display for sale for these routes on united.com and other distribution channels beginning on August 25, while Denver to Narita service is available for sale now. In the near future, United will announce plans for initial domestic flying for the 787, which will precede the launch of international flights described above.

Configured with 36 seats in United BusinessFirst, 72 seats in United Economy Plus and 111 seats in United Economy, the Dreamliner will revolutionize the flying experience for United customers and crews while delivering unprecedented operating efficiency, comfort and lower emissions. Customers will experience greater comfort with improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems, among other passenger-friendly features.

ANA announces new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner routes

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) has announced new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner routes. The airline will launch the Tokyo (Narita)-San Jose, California route on January 11, 2013. In addition, the company is starting Tokyo (Narita)-Seattle/Tacoma nonstop service on October 1, 2012 and Tokyo (Haneda)-Beijing flights on October 28, 2012.

ANA:

American Airlines’ pilots reject the tentative contract by 61%

American Airlines‘ (Dallas/Fort Worth) 7,500 pilots, represented by the Allied Pilots Association (APA), have rejected by a 61 percent vote, to disapprove the latest tentative contract. American stated it was disappointed by the vote and will now ask the bankruptcy court to impose harsher terms for its pilots.

Meanwhile AA’s flight attendants are voting on a tentative agreement through August 19.

Nippon Cargo Airlines introduces a new livery with the new Boeing 747-800 freighters

Nippon Cargo Airlines-NCA (Tokyo-Narita) has introduced this new livery with the first new Boeing 747-800 freighters. The cargo airline has 15 copies on order.
