New ANA Video: Funny or Racist? ANA Group releases its summer domestic schedule

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) has introduced this new TV commercial (above) mainly for the domestic Japanese market. The airline in the TV ad is boasting about its international expansion and jokingly suggests it needs to become more international in its appearance. The ad also pokes fun at Westerners. Reactions are on the two ends of the spectrum, either funny or stereotypical racist. There does not appear to be a middle ground of opinions.

My take: Advertising is meant to grab the attention of the viewer. This ad certainly has grabbed the attention of viewers, both in Japan and worldwide. Is it a plus for ANA? Maybe. Time will tell, especially since everything produced today is now worldwide in consumption. There are no barriers on the Internet. Things meant for domestic consumption become an international viral hit in a short amount of time. Personally, I find it very funny. We all need to laugh at ourselves more. What do you think?

In other news, the ANA Group has presented its domestic timetable effective on March 30, 2014 for the summer season:

ANA Group, Japan’s largest airline group, today announces that it has submitted its proposed route network for the summer timetable commencing March 30, 2014 to October 25, 2014 to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in Japan.ANA continues to further expand its network and improve competitiveness in order to survive in what is an increasingly competitive industry.

ANA and Garuda Indonesia move closer with a new partnership, both airlines will launch a Tokyo Haneda-Jakarta route

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) and Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) have announced a comprehensive partnership under which the two airlines will code share on flights between the two countries and will allow passengers to be able to collect and redeem miles on Frequent Flyer Program of both airlines.

From March 30, 2014, ANA will operate new route between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Jakarta Airport, followed by Garuda Indonesia opening the same route from the first quarter of 2014. These new flights will increase the number of weekly flights operated by the two carriers between Japan and Indonesia to 53 – comprising 14 ANA flights and 39 Garuda Indonesia flights. Both airlines will be providing improved and expanded customer service concurrent with this agreement and network expansion.

ANA and Garuda will allocate code share flight numbers to flights between Japan and Indonesia operated by each airline.
Passengers on ANA flights arriving in Jakarta will be able to travel on to maximum of 10 Indonesian routes such as Jogjakarta or Denpasar on code share flights operated by Garuda Indonesia while passengers on Garuda Indonesia flights arriving at Haneda Airport, Narita Airport or Kansai International Airport will be able to travel on to maximum of 11 Japanese routes such as Chitose or Nagoya using code share flights operated by ANA.

The two airlines will also start discussions on a partnership between their respective mileage programs. The details of joint mileage program, including the start date, will be announced separately on both companies’ websites when decided.

ANA to fly to Vancouver from Haneda Airport starting on March 30

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) has announced its schedule plans for the summer season of 2014. The airline will add new service to Vancouver and Hanoi starting on March 30, 2014. Here are the full details:

ANA is announcing a new international flight schedule for summer 2014, introducing services to Vancouver (Canada) and Hanoi (Vietnam) for the first time. Additional services will be introduced at that time, with further route and schedule details to be announced.This expansion, effective from March 30, 2014, will make ANA the biggest airline carrier at Haneda, offering the most international flights to and from this airport. Haneda Airport is easily accessible from Tokyo and the new flight schedule, combined with ANA’s existing domestic network, will make it easier and more convenient for passengers to connect within Japan and to travel to overseas destinations. While new destinations such as Vancouver and Hanoi will be serviced from Haneda airport, flights toLondon, Paris, Jakarta and Manila will also start flying from Haneda airport in addition to existing services from Narita airport.ANA is also increasing the number of North American destinations it services from Asian cities via Narita, to improve convenience for transit passengers.

ANA operates a dual-airport strategy in the Tokyo area, capitalizing on the respective strengths of Haneda and Narita Airport. Routes and schedules for destinations served from both airports are carefully planned to complement one another, offering passengers the greatest choice and convenience, and to meet the growing demand for international travel.

ANA to introduce new Boeing 787 routes to Singapore, Shanghai and Jakarta

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) is planning to expand capacity on routes between Japan, Asia and North America. ANA issued this report:

ANA Group is set to expand capacity on routes between Japan, Asia and North America in a modification to its international and domestic air transportation plan for second half of FY2013. This expansion will allow the airline to capitalize on the strong demand for travel to Japan and for flights between Asia and North America.On international routes, ANA Group is preparing for the second round of additional takeoff and landing slots for international routes at Haneda Airport. In addition, the airline is increasing the frequency of flights on routes to North America and expanding supply capacity on Asian routes, in line with its strategy to absorb increasing demand for flights to Japan and flights between Asia and North America, transiting in Japan.

These service enhancements will make it more convenient for ANA passengers to travel both domestically and internationally and will improve ANA’s standing as a full-service carrier, further enhancing the Company’s competitive edge.

1.International Routes

ANA Group has strengthened its North American route network by increasing flights to New York from October 2012 and by increasing flights to Chicago from September 1. In addition, in order to respond to further increases in demand for flights to Japan and flights between Asia and North America transiting in Japan via the Narita Airport hub, ANA Group will be expanding capacity on Asian routes by introducing larger aircraft.(1) Introduction of Boeing 787-8 on Asian routes

The Boeing 787-8, which is larger than the Boeing 767-300 ER, will be introduced on the routes below.

*All 14 flights will be operated by B787-8 from Sunday, October 27, 2013

The premium economy seats and services which have proved extremely popular on Boeing 777-300 ER long-haul international flights (routes to Europe and North America) will be sequentially introduced on to 787* flights.

From September 1, 2013, premium economy service will begin on the Haneda = Frankfurt route, and will subsequently be introduced sequentially onto other routes.
*Seat specifications: Business class 46 seats, premium economy class 21 seats, economy class 102 seats (Total: 169 seats)

2.Others

ANA Group is planning, at the end of fiscal year 2013, to retire all Boeing 747-400 aircraft, which have served for many years as the Group’s mainstay aircraft model, principally on major routes. For Cargo flights, ANA Group is launching two new routes from Sunday, October 27, 2013. The routes are Narita=Guangzhou and Okinawa=Qingdao, both operated by Boeing 767-300F . Tokyo(Narita)=Guangzhou will serve from above date until Monday, March 3, 2014.
Furthermore, at the end of fiscal 2013, ANA will be taking delivery of its tenth Boeing 767-300F dedicated cargo aircraft, with the aim of expanding cargo business.

ANA reports a wiring problem on fire extinguishers on three Boeing 787-8s

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) reported on Wednesday it had discovered wiring problems in the fire extinguishers on three of its Boeing 787-8s.

United Technologies reported yesterday its units were responsible for the problem due to an assembly error. The error has been corrected and all 787s are being inspected with the assistance of Boeing according to this report by Reuters.

ANA is planning to retire the last Boeing 747 on March 29, 2014

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) is planning to retire the last Boeing 747-400 on March 29, 2014. The last route is tentatively schedule as a flight between Naha, Okinawa and Tokyo (Haneda) per Airline Route.

The airline is currently operating five domestic models on domestic routes in Japan.

ANA added its first Boeing 747SR-81 (JA8133) (above) on December 20, 1978 for its high-density domestic routes. ANA also added its first Boeing 747-281B (JA8174) (below) on June 25, 1986.

ANA orders three additional Boeing 777-300 ERs

ANA (All Nippon AIrways) (Tokyo) and Boeing have announced ANA has ordered three additional 777-300 ER (extended range) airplanes. The order, valued at approximately $945 million at current list prices, will increase the total number of 777s in ANA’s fleet to 57 airplanes once delivered. ANA currently operates 26 Boeing 777-300s (see below).

In route news, ANA will increase the number of flights between Tokyo-Narita, and Yangon Airport in Myanmar, to seven flights per week, from three. As a result, there will be a daily service on this route from September 30, 2013. In addition, seat capacity for the route will be increased by replacing the Boeing 737-700 aircraft with the 767-300 ER aircraft.

ANA will also announce the name of a new Narita International Airport-based leisure carrier. The new subsidiary will replace the now failed joint venture with AirAsia, named AirAsia Japan. This unit will served leisure destinations such as Guam and Hawaii and will launch operations with two aircraft. The fleet will expand to five aircraft by March 2014 according to Reuters.

On the financial side, ANA Holdings reported a $57.3 million operating loss for the fiscal first quarter ending on June 30.

In addition, the flag carrier announced its new in-flight services and the new “Inspiration of JAPAN” tagline and issued this statement:

From late August, 2013, ANA will begin flying aircraft adorned with the tagline ‘Inspiration of JAPAN’, ANA’s brand concept. Alongside of this tagline, ANA will enhance its in-flight services and introduce new services throughout this fiscal year, starting from September.Inspiration of Japan
‘Inspiration of JAPAN’, which is the products and services brand of ANA, will be re-stated as the company tagline and will be designed on all of ANA’s aircraft. ANA to add two new Boeing 787 routes

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) is planning to introduce the Boeing 787 on two new international routes, bringing the number of overseas destinations it serves with the Dreamliner to eight.

ANA will begin flying the Boeing 787 from Tokyo Narita to Munich on September 1 and Singapore on October 1. ANA will also re-introduce the aircraft on its Tokyo Narita-Seattle/Tacoma route on September 20.

The 787, which offers significantly better fuel efficiency than rival aircraft and new standards of passenger comfort, already serves ANA routes from Tokyo to Frankfurt, San Jose, Beijing, Taipei and Shanghai.

The increase in 787 flights is part of an international expansion plan that will also see ANA double the number of flights between Tokyo Narita and Chicago O’Hare to 14 flights a week starting on September 1 to meet the growth in demand for connections between Asia and North America. In addition, ANA is introducing a larger sized aircraft onto services between Tokyo Narita and Shanghai on September 30.

ANA to buy out AirAsia’s share of AirAsia Japan, the joint venture to be dissolved

ANA Holdings Inc (ANA-All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) according to Reuters, will buy out AirAsia’s (Malaysia) (Kuala Lumpur) portion of AirAsia Japan (Tokyo-Narita) joint venture for over $25 million. The loss-making entity will be dissolved. AirAsia Japan commenced operations only on August 1, 2012. ANA controls 67 percent of the shares.

ANA is considering its options. The joint venture could be rolled into Peach Aviation.

ANA resumes non-scheduled Boeing 787 flights today

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) today resumed Boeing 787-8 passenger flights on the Sapporo-Tokyo (Haneda) route. The airline is gradually phasing in the previously grounded airliner type with five “non-scheduled” domestic routes. The airline issued this statement:

ANA, Japan’s largest airline, will operate five non-scheduled, domestic flights on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner between May 26 and May 31. This is in advance of the resumption of scheduled 787 services from June 1, 2013. These non-scheduled services are being operated in anticipation of high passenger demand.

ANA has implemented modifications to all 17 of its 787 aircraft and a total of 170 proving flights and cockpit crew training have been safely completed.

Osamu Shinobe, President and CEO of ANA, said “The safety of passengers is our number one priority. Modifications for all 787 have been implemented and ANA has undertaken its own additional testing. The 787 remains a game-changing aircraft, important from an environmental, efficiency and passenger comfort perspective.”

All schedules are subject to approval by relevant authorities.
