Are nonstop New York LGA-California flights a possibility?

According to this report by Dan Reed of Forbes, the Post Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages LaGuardia Airport (LGA) along with John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), is considering lifting the perimeter rule at LGA that restricts nonstop flights over 1,500 miles.

Airlines will likely move some JFK-West Coast flights to LGA. The loser in this possible rule change may be the small communities with their current flights to LGA with smaller aircraft. The number of 50-seat regional jets is likely to decrease with any rule change at LGA. Embraer ERJ 145LR (EMB-145LR) N278SK (msn 145370) climbs away from the runway at LGA.
