Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) starting on June 1 will introduce the Boeing 787 on the Addis Ababa-Paris (CDG)-Brussels route, replacing a Boeing 767-300 per Airline Route with six weekly flights.

Ethiopian Airlines to fly to Kano, Nigeria starting on May 24

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) has announced the commencement of four weekly flights to Kano, Nigeria, starting on May 24, 2014.

The flights to Kano will be Ethiopian fourth destination in Nigeria, in addition to Lagos, Abuja and Enugu.

Ethiopian starts nonstop Boeing 787 flights to Shanghai, China

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) on March 29 started daily nonstop service to Shanghai, China. Ethiopian operates the Shanghai flight using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 24 Cloud Nine Business Class and 246 Economy Class seats.

Shanghai is Ethiopian’s 80th international destination.

Malawian Airlines launches operations in Malawi

Malawian DHC-8-400 (14)(Flt)(Bombardier)(LRW)

Malawian Airlines (Lilongwe, Malawi) introduced Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) turboprop serviceย on January 31 between Lilongwe and Blantyre. Malawian Airlines launched domestic and international flights with a dual-class DHC-8-402 (Q400)ย (ET-AQB, man 4419) leased from co-owner Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa).

The domestic route was extended internationally to Harare, Zimbabwe on February 3 with ET-AQB.

The new airline is also planning to add a Boeing 737-800.

Founded in July 2013, Malawian Airlines is a public-private partnership between the Government of Malawi, Ethiopian Airlines and Malawian institutional and individual investors.

Ethiopian Airlines is pleased to announce that its strategic partner for the southern Africa region, Malawian Airlines, has launched its first international flight to Johannesburg on February 17, 2014.

Malawian will operate daily from Lilongwe to Johannesburg, with a stopover in Blantyre, with a brand new Boeing 737-800 with Sky Interior and a 154 seat capacity configured in two classes, Business and Economy.

As part of its strategy to set up multiple hubs in Africa in line with its 15 year strategic roadmap, Vision 2025, Ethiopian has partnered with the Malawian Government and private interests in the country to establish Malawian Airlines in Lilongwe. Ethiopian has 49% equity stake as well as the technical and management contract for the new airline. Lilongwe is now the 3rd hub of Ethiopian for Southern Africa region, after Lomรฉ, which has been serving for the last 4 years as a hub for the West African region thru a partnership with ASKY Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines takes delivery of its first Boeing 777-300 ER via GECAS, enters service today

Boeing (Chicago) has delivered a 777-300 ER (Extended Range) jet to GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) for lease to Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa). The 777-300 ER is now the largest airplane in the Ethiopian flag-carrier’s fleet and will provide it with increased capacity and improved operating economics on key routes from its base in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The pictured 777-36N ER ET-APX (msn 42101) was handed over on November 7 as scheduled.

Ethiopian’s first 777-300 ER will seat nearly 400 passengers in a two-class configuration and perfectly complements its existing fleet of six 777-200 LR (Longer Range) airplanes by providing additional capacity and flexibility on popular routes, such as Guangzhou, Washington, D.C. and Dubai.

The 777-300 ER can fly up to 7,825 nautical miles (14,490 kilometers) and is equipped with GE90-115B engines, the world’s most powerful commercial jet engine. Ethiopian’s 777-300ER also features the Boeing Signature Interior that offers wider seats, wider aisles, more headroom and more seating flexibility.

Ethiopian currently serves 76 destinations across five continents and was recently awarded African Business of the Year at the annual African Business Awards. The carrier’s partnership with Boeing stretches back over six decades, with a current fleet of nearly 50 Boeing airplanes that includes Next-Generation 737s, 757s, 767s, 777s, and 787 Dreamliners and a cargo fleet that includes 757s, 777 Freighters and a MD-11.

Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing and most profitable African airline, took delivery of the first of its four Boeing 777-300 ERs on November 7, 2013. The Boeing 777-300 ER is the largest aircraft in the airlineโ€™s fleet with 400 passengers seating capacity.

Ethiopian Boeing 777-300 ER will operate in its dense routes such as Guangzhou, Washington D.C., Dubai and Luanda. The aircraft is scheduled to serve the Addis Ababa – Luanda route three times a week, as of November 10, 2013, and three times a week on the Addis Ababa – Guangzhou route, as of November 15, 2013.

Ethiopian, which is a multi-award winning Pan-African carrier as the Passenger Choice “Best Airline in Africa” and the SKYTRAX “Best Staff Service in Africa” of 2013, will phase in three additional B777-300ERs in January 2014, May and June 2015.

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) will take delivery of its first Boeing 777-300 ER on November 7. Boeing 777-36N ER ET-APX (msn 42101) is the first of four and is currently being painted for the handover.

The new 777-300 ER will operate on Ethiopian’s dense routes such as from Addis Ababa to Guangzhou (China), Washington (Dulles)ย D.C., Dubai and Luanda. The aircraft is scheduled to serve the Addis Ababa – Luanda route three times a week, as of November 10, 2013, and three times a week on the Addis Ababa – Guangzhou route starting on November 15, 2013.

In other news, Ethiopian will extend its system toย Singapore on December 3, 2013 with three weekly flights. The new flights to Singapore will be operated with Boeing 767-300 aircraft with 24 seats in Ethiopian Cloud Nine Business Class and 211 seats in Economy class.

Ethiopian Airlines to increase its Boeing 787 fleet

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) has leased three additional Boeing 787-8s boasting its fleet to 13. The airline is already operating a fleet of five. Despite the problems and grounding with the new type, which affected earnings, the airline wants to add more 787s beyond the 13 according to a report by The Economic Times.

Qatar Airways to fly to Ethiopia

Qatar Airways (Doha) will add a new route from Doha to Addis Ababa starting on September 18. The new route to Ethiopia will be operated three days a week with Airbus A320s. ADD will be 20th destination in Africa for the carrier.

In other news, the airlineย has added two additional flights between its hub in Doha and Amman, bringing the total number of services to Jordan to nine weekly flights.

Qatar Airways has so far launched six destinations this year โ€“ Gassim (Saudi Arabia), Najaf (Iraq), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Chicago O’Hare (USA), Salalah (Oman) and Basra (Iraq).
