Update from Delta: Continued wintry precipitation hampers Atlanta operations reset

Delta people have been working around the clock to reset the Atlanta Airport operations for weekend travel; however, the continued stream of winter precipitation in metro Atlanta throughout the night continues to impact the airlineโ€™s startup at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Aircraft parked overnight on gates require a heavy pass of deicing before their first departures of the day, but as wintry precipitation tails off and temperatures rise, the operation expects to see increased momentum throughout the morning.

Delta ended Friday with more than 1000 system-wide cancellations, most departing from or arriving into Atlanta. Saturdayโ€™s operation opened with more than 350 system-wide cancels, again, with the bulk touching the Atlanta airport.

10 p.m. ET, Dec. 8

Prolonged wintry precipitation and plunging temperatures continue to adversely affect Deltaโ€™s hub operation in Atlanta, causing approximately 970 flight cancellations Friday and approximately 290 for Saturday. Delta people are working through the night Friday to mitigate further impact to customers. Delta teams will be focused Saturday on resetting the Atlanta hub as the weather clears, while carefully managing winter storm impact along the mid-Atlantic region and at its New York City hubs.

Waivers for customers ticketed to, from or through Atlanta–now extended for customers ticketed through Dec. 10–New York City, and airports in the U.S. northeast are in place.

Customers are encouraged to useย delta.comย to change travel plans Customers affected by weather may make a one-time change to their ticket without fee if they are scheduled to travel to, from, or through the affected destinationsย on Delta, Delta Connection, or Delta-coded flights during the specified time periods listedย here. Additionally, if customersโ€™ flights are cancelled or significantly delayed, they may request a refund.

4 p.m. ET, Dec. 8

Deltaโ€™s Atlanta operation continues to be challenged by an intensified wintry mix driving lengthy deicing delays. The airline has canceled an additional 250 flights for a total of 625 from Atlanta today. Additionally, Delta has added a weather waiver for the northeast region including the New York area and Boston for travel on Saturday, Dec. 9. Please check Delta.com for the latest updates.

Noon ET,ย Dec. 8

On Thursday, Delta initially canceled about 125 flights for Friday given the forecast for winter storms atย its largest hub, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and canceled an additional 250 flights as of noon Friday.ย Delta will maintain a delayed operation to ensure flights are properly de-iced and continuously moving. The airline will monitor any changes to the storm and may addย cancellations or further delays as needed.

Delta to serve Havana, Cuba, from New York-JFK, Atlanta and Miami

https://airlinersgallery.smugmug.com/World-Airline-News/World-Airline-News-July-2016/i-w28Xjw7/A

Delta Air Lines will begin serving Havana, Cuba, this fall from New York-JFK, Atlanta and Miami as a result of today’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Delta applauds and thanks the DOT for awarding the airline the ability to resume operating daily, nonstop scheduled service to the Caribbean island for the first time in almost 55 years.

All routes are subject to Cuban regulatory approval. Delta will begin selling seats to Havana this summer.

Delta inherited passenger service to Havana, Cuba, from its merger with Chicago and Southern Air Lines (C&S) on May 1, 1953, offering nonstop flights from New Orleans. Political instability and profitability issues ultimately led Delta to suspend service on December 1, 1961.

From 2002-2004 Delta operated charters between New York-JFK and Havana. In October 2011, Delta began operating up to a dozen charter flights to Havana per week with daily service from Miami and weekly service from Atlanta and New York-JFK. It operated almost 500 trips before suspending service on December 29, 2012. Most recently, in 2015, Delta performed three ad hoc charter flights including one that carried the Minnesota Orchestra back to Cuba for its first performance on the island in more than 85 years.
