Allegiant announces 14 new routes and five new cities

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) today announced new, nonstop jet service on 14 routes, including the addition of five new cities, to the Allegiant network. Allegiant will now offer service to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Indianapolis, Indiana, Omaha, Nebraska, Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida.

Irelandia Aviation and Grupo IAMSA to expand the Viva brand in Central and South America

Irelandia Aviation and Grupo IAMSA, owners of Mexico’s low-cost airline VivaAerobusย (Monterrey) and the Colombian airline VivaColombiaย (Medellin), announced their intention to expand the Viva airline brand in Central and South America.

Grupo Viva is being established as a multinational airline holding company based in Panama City, Panama. The new company will be responsible for the further development of the Viva airline brand beyond current operations in Mexico and Colombia, maximizing cost synergies and operational efficiencies across the group and centralizing key management functions.

Grupo Viva is chaired by Roberto Alcรกntara Rojas, also Chairman of the Board of VivaAerobus and Grupo IAMSA. Irelandia Aviation Managing Partner Declan Ryan will be a principal investor.

Tony Davis, currently Partner and COO of Irelandia Aviation, has been appointed CEO. In addition to working with Irelandia Aviation for the past three years, Tony has an extensive track record in establishing low-cost airlines around the world, and he has been closely involved in the recent development of VivaAerobus and VivaColombia. Tony will be responsible for the creation of the Group’s corporate structure and management infrastructure over the next 12 months.

Joe Mohan, who is joining from his position as Senior VP Commercial at COPA Airlines, has been appointed President and COO. Joe has worked in Central and South America for more than 10 years and led the commercial function in one of the region’s most successful airline groups, consistently achieving impressive growth and profitability results. He also brings direct experience of helping lead a high-performing Latin American company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Joe will be responsible for the expansion of the group’s regional coverage and improving cost synergies and operational efficiencies for airlines in the group.

Commenting on the appointments, Declan Ryan said, “We are delighted that two executives of the caliber of Tony and Joe have agreed to lead the creation and development of our new low-cost airline group in Latin America. We are convinced that there are tremendous opportunities for our ultra-low-cost airline model to expand in the region. With our existing airlines already well-established in Mexico and Colombia, together with our order last year for 52 new Airbus A320 aircraft, this is the right time to establish Grupo Viva.”

American to add four new domestic destinations from the Miami hub on March 5, starts Cap-Haitien service today

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) will launch new service between its Miami hub and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Kansas City International Airport (MCI), Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and San Antonio International Airport (SAT) on March 5, 2015.

With these new routes, American will serve more than 130 domestic and international destinations from its Miami hub, providing customers ideal connections to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.

These new routes will be served with Boeing 737-800 aircraft and will operate on the following daily schedule (all times local):

American begins new daily service today (October 2) between Miami and Cap-Haitien, Haiti (CAP), adding a new international destination to the airline’s network. The new route supplements American’s long-standing service to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Delta announces new flights from Los Angeles to Austin, Boise and San Salvador

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) this summer will continue its expansion atย Los Angelesย International Airport with new daily nonstop service toย Austin, Texas, andย Boise, Idaho, along with new daily nonstop service toย San Salvador,ย El Salvador, pending government approval. Delta also has filed for approval to begin daily service betweenย Los Angelesย andย Monterrey, Mexico.

With new service toย Austin, Delta will now connectย Los Angeles’ย growing Silicon Beach tech and startup community with all the major tech centers inย the United States, including:ย Boston, beginningย June 5;ย New York; Oakland, Calif.;ย Portland, Oregon;ย Salt Lake City;ย San Francisco;ย San Jose, Calif.;ย Seattle/Tacoma; and now Austin.

Additionally, customers inย Austin,ย Boise,ย Monterreyย andย San Salvadorย will soon have one-stop service toย Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda, andย Sydneyย through Delta’s international gateway inย Los Angeles.

Delta has made significant enhancements to itsย Los Angelesย service both on the ground and in the air in the last few years. Travelers throughย Los Angelesย will enjoy the benefits of theย $229 millionย expansion and enhancement of Terminal 5 atย Los Angelesย International Airport. The current project will double the size of the ticketing lobby and screening checkpoints, open an exclusive, separate Sky Priority lobby and checkpoint, and include renovations to the Delta Sky Club and new baggage carousels. The project has already begun and is scheduled to take place in several phases with full completion in 2015.

Delta currently operates 130 flights to 43 destinations from LAX, and every flight offers BusinessElite/First Class and Economy Comfort seating. By this summer, Delta will operate more than 140 peak-day flights to LAX, including our new service. Nearly every domestic flight features Wi-Fi service.

British Airways launches the new Boeing 787 route to Austin, Texas with Jerry Hall

British Airways (London) today (March 3) launched the new London (Heathrow)-Austin, Texas Boeing 787 route with the help of Texan Jerry Hall (formerly married to Mick Jagger). The inaugural flight is utilizing 787-8 G-ZBJC (see below).

Austin is British Airwaysโ€™ 25th North American gateway and third in the state of Texasย (Houston and Dallas being the other two). This is the first trans-Atlantic route betweenย Austin and London.

The callsign for British Airways aircraft is Speedbird. The Speedbird symbol wasย designed by Lee-Elliott for Imperial Airways in 1932. It represents speed, flight andย power โ€“ and became one of the most successful motifs of the twentieth century.

Speedbird 191 will arrive in Austin later today.

British Airways today launches its inaugural flight between Austin, Texasย andย London, England.ย  This marks the first regular trans-Atlantic nonstop service for the city of Austin.ย  The inaugural flight into Austin Bergstrom International Airport will be met byย Austinย Mayorย Lee Leffingwellย and British Airways EVP Americas Sean Doyle.

For this much anticipated route, British Airways will operate one of the newest aircraft in its fleet, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.ย  The service will be available five days a week, increasing to daily flights in May.ย  The first flight is perfectly timed to help accommodate travelers fromย Europeย heading to the international South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals.

The new aircraft features three cabins: Club World (business class), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and World Traveller (economy).ย  The cabins feature stylish new interiors with state-of-the-art entertainment systems.ย  British Airways provides meals, snacks and beverages, including full-service bar for free.ย  Customers can also benefit from a generous baggage allowance.

Delta to add two new routes from Los Angeles

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) is planning to add two new routes from Los Angeles in June including the first Boeing 717 route. According to Airline Route the carrier will add Delta Connection daily service from LAX to Boise, Idaho with Embraer 175s starting on June 5.

The first Boeing 717 route from LAX will operate between LAX and Austin, Texas on a daily basis starting on June 16.

In other news, seasonal Delta Connection flights will be operated from the Minneapolis/St. Paul hub to Idaho Falls with Bombardier CRJ900s three days a week from June 7 through October 29 per Airline Route.

FedEx will have to compete with UPS for the U.S. Postal Service contract

FedEx Express (Memphis) has been informed by the U.S. Postal Service it will have to bid for a new postal contract that is expiring in September 2013 according to this report by Reuters. This will open the door for UPS-United Parcel Service (Atlanta) to bid on the contract. According to Reuters, “FedEx is the postal service’s top contractor, earning an estimated $1.5 billion in revenue in fiscal 2011, according to Husch Blackwell LLP’s postal service contracting practice group.”
