LAN Airlines takes delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

787-9 ILF_LAN #259-ZB224

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and LAN Airlines (Chile) (Santiago) (LATAM Airlines Group) yesterday (February 5) celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first 787-9 Dreamliner. LATAM Airlines Group is leasing the new airplane from Amsterdam-based lessor AerCap.

LATAM Airlines Group will become Latin America’s first operator of both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants of the Dreamliner family when the airline group launches 787-9 services on South American routes in April.

With this delivery, LATAM Airlines Group will have 11 787s in its fleet, the most in Latin America. The company is building a fleet of 32 787 Dreamliners, including 10 787-9s, over the next several years.

The 787-9 complements and extends the 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will fly up to 40 more passengers an additional 450 nautical miles (830 kilometers) with the same exceptional environmental performance โ€“ 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering passenger-pleasing features such as large windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

Fifty-eight customers from around the world have ordered more than 1,070 787s, with more than 200 airplanes delivered.

ANA to order three Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, also orders five 737-800s

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and ANA-All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) have announced the airline’s intent to purchase three 787-10 Dreamliners to add additional flexibility to the airline’s 787 fleet. In addition, ANA announced an order for five Next-Generation 737-800s to bolster the airline’s growing narrow-body fleet. This agreement, once all commitments are finalized, will be valued at approximately $1.4 billion at current list prices, and ANA will become the first airline in Asia to operate the entire family of 787 Dreamliners.

ANA, the launch customer of the 787, is poised to become Boeing’s newest 787-10 customer and has taken more 787 deliveries than any other customer at 34, with 46 still on order.

ANA plans to leverage the added efficiency and full flexibility the complete family of 787s will allow for its future fleet. In addition, ANA will be able to maintain the innovative passenger experience onboard the Dreamliner that customers have grown accustomed to over the years. The airline will use the new 737-800s to enhance the flexibility of its expanding fleet.

The 787-10 is the third and longest member of the super-efficient 787 family. With its greater passenger and cargo capacity, high degree of commonality and passenger-pleasing features, the 787-10 will complement the family while setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics. The 787-10 will be 25 to 30 percent more efficient than airplanes of its size today and more than 10 percent better than anything offered by the competition for the future.

AirEuropa orders 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

Air Europa 787-8 artwork

AirEuropa (Palma de Mallorca and Madrid) and Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) today announced an order for 14 787-9 Dreamliners, valued at $3.6 billion at list prices, the largest ever Boeing widebody order from a Spanish carrier. The order was booked in December 2014 and was previously attributed to an unidentified customer on the Boeing Orders and Deliveries website.

AirEuropa now has a combined total of 22 787-8s and 787-9s on order as it continues its transition to an all-Boeing long-haul fleet.

The 787-9 complements and extends the 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 6 meters (20 feet) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will fly up to 40 more passengers an additional 830 kilometers (450 nautical miles) with the same exceptional environmental performance โ€“ 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes they replace.

Based at Palma de Mallorca Airport, with a key hub at Adolfo Suarez-Madrid Barajas airport, AirEuropa has grown to be one of the largest airlines in Spain serving more than 40 destinations across Europe and the Americas. Throughout its history, AirEuropa has operated 737s, 757s and 767s and currently has a combination of 30 Next-Generation 737-800s and 787 Dreamliners on order from Boeing.

In other news,ย  Boeing and Embraer yesterday opened a joint sustainable aviation biofuel research center in a collaborative effort to further establish the aviation biofuel industry in Brazil.

At the Boeing-Embraer Joint Research Center in the Sรฃo Josรฉ dos Campos Technology Park, the companies will coordinate and co-fund research with Brazilian universities and other institutions. The research will focus on technologies that address gaps in creating a sustainable aviation biofuel industry in Brazil, such as feedstock production, techno-economic analysis, economic viability studies and processing technologies.

Air New Zealand finalizes its order for two additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

Air New Zealand (Auckland) and Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) have finalized an order for two additional 787-9 Dreamliners, valued at $514 million at current list prices. The order, booked in 2014, comes six months after Air New Zealand celebrated the first 787-9 delivery in July.

This order will eventually increase the airline’s fleet to a total of 12 787-9s, which will operate alongside 15 777-200 ERs (Extended Range) and 777-300 ERs.

Air New Zealand is the launch customer of the 787-9 and currently operates three of the aircraft in its fleet. Including today’s announcement, the airline now has nine unfilled 787-9s on order.

The 787-9 complements and extends the 787 family, offering airlines the ability to grow routes opened with the 787-8. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters), the 787-9 can fly up to 40 more passengers an additional 450 nautical miles (830 kilometers) with the same exceptional environmental performance โ€“ 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

To date, 58 customers around the world have ordered 1,071 787s.

Boeing delivers the first 787-9 Dreamliner to Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) yesterday (December 31) took delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The pictured stretched 787-9 A6-BLA (msn 39646) was handed over to the fast-growing United Arab Emirates carrier. Boeing issued this statement:

Boeing delivered Etihad Airways’ first 787-9 Dreamliner sporting the airline’s new “Facets of Abu Dhabi” livery which was revealed at a ceremony earlier this year. The colors are reminiscent of the desert landscape, inspired by the culture, Islamic design and architecture motifs of the United Arab Emirates.

The airplane is the first of the 71 Dreamliners that the national airline of the United Arab Emirates has on order which includes 41 787-9s and 30 787-10s. Etihad Airways will also be the first airline in the Middle East to operate the 787-9.

The 787-9 can carry 280 passengers 8,300 nautical miles (15,372 kilometers). The 787-10, launched in June 2013 and in development now, will fly 323 passengers up to 7,000 nautical miles (13,000 kilometers), or more than 90 percent of the world’s twin-aisle routes.

As of November 30, 2014, 58 customers have ordered 1,055 787s.
