Virgin Atlantic to offer a second daily flight to San Francisco, will use Sony devices

Virgin Atlantic Airways (London) has announced a second daily London (Heathrow) – San Francisco flight starting on October 25.

Flights VS 41 LHR-SFO and VS 42 SFO-LHR will operate with the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

In other news, the airline has announced aย trial with Sony Mobile Communications to test how new wearable technology can help improve the airlineโ€™s maintenance and engineering processes. The airline issued this statement:

Sony SmartWatch 3

Engineers working on Virgin Atlantic aircraft at the airport and in the hangar will be testing the use of Sonyโ€™s SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1, tablet, mobile phone and SmartWatch 3 (above) in an eight-week trial, starting next week. The trial will take place at London Heathrow and will test how the technology can be used for real time communication between the engineering team on the aircraft and in the engineering support areas.

Using Sonyโ€™s SmartWear alongside a smart phone or tablet will remove paper from some engineering processes and reduce the journey times between an aircraft and technical control. This will enable the engineers and technicians to remain on the aircraft during turnarounds โ€“ helping to save valuable time, as well as make a significant contribution to Virgin Atlanticโ€™s targets to reduce paper waste.

Phil Maher, Director of Operations at Virgin Atlantic, said: โ€œWeโ€™re delighted to be partnering with Sony to trial wearable technology within our engineering team.

During the trial, engineers will be able to receive notifications on their SmartWatch 3 devices about any changes to job allocations, or detail in the tasks. Managers will be able to get instant feedback that the engineer has read the notification and that the task is in hand.

Engineers will be able to use SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 to take pictures or video of the tasks they are working on. This will be linked to an app running on a smartphone which will allow the engineers to efficiently complete and submit a form requesting further technical assistance. SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 will also be used for real-time video streaming to allow office-based engineering staff to see a problem from the engineersโ€™ point of view in order to provide more rapid technical assistance.

LAN Airlines takes delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

787-9 ILF_LAN #259-ZB224

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and LAN Airlines (Chile) (Santiago) (LATAM Airlines Group) yesterday (February 5) celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first 787-9 Dreamliner. LATAM Airlines Group is leasing the new airplane from Amsterdam-based lessor AerCap.

LATAM Airlines Group will become Latin America’s first operator of both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants of the Dreamliner family when the airline group launches 787-9 services on South American routes in April.

With this delivery, LATAM Airlines Group will have 11 787s in its fleet, the most in Latin America. The company is building a fleet of 32 787 Dreamliners, including 10 787-9s, over the next several years.

The 787-9 complements and extends the 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will fly up to 40 more passengers an additional 450 nautical miles (830 kilometers) with the same exceptional environmental performance โ€“ 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering passenger-pleasing features such as large windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

Fifty-eight customers from around the world have ordered more than 1,070 787s, with more than 200 airplanes delivered.

ANA to order three Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, also orders five 737-800s

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and ANA-All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) have announced the airline’s intent to purchase three 787-10 Dreamliners to add additional flexibility to the airline’s 787 fleet. In addition, ANA announced an order for five Next-Generation 737-800s to bolster the airline’s growing narrow-body fleet. This agreement, once all commitments are finalized, will be valued at approximately $1.4 billion at current list prices, and ANA will become the first airline in Asia to operate the entire family of 787 Dreamliners.

ANA, the launch customer of the 787, is poised to become Boeing’s newest 787-10 customer and has taken more 787 deliveries than any other customer at 34, with 46 still on order.

ANA plans to leverage the added efficiency and full flexibility the complete family of 787s will allow for its future fleet. In addition, ANA will be able to maintain the innovative passenger experience onboard the Dreamliner that customers have grown accustomed to over the years. The airline will use the new 737-800s to enhance the flexibility of its expanding fleet.

The 787-10 is the third and longest member of the super-efficient 787 family. With its greater passenger and cargo capacity, high degree of commonality and passenger-pleasing features, the 787-10 will complement the family while setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics. The 787-10 will be 25 to 30 percent more efficient than airplanes of its size today and more than 10 percent better than anything offered by the competition for the future.
