Etihad Regional (operated by Darwin Airline) (Lugano and Geneva) has announced an agreement to lease four ATR 72-500 aircraft, which will see the carrier boost its regional fleet to 12 aircraft and support its rapidly expanding network.

All four aircraft will be delivered from March through June 2014. The airline currently operates a fleet of eight 50-seat SAAB 2000 turboprop aircraft.

Etihad Regional will configure each aircraft with 68 seats.

The lease of the aircraft was arranged by Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC), the worldโ€™s largest turboprop leasing company headquartered in Billund, Denmark.

Etihad Regional’s Maiden Flight Takes To The Skies – 23 Jan 2014 En

Darwin Airline adopted the new name and brand after Etihad Airways invested in the regional carrier with a one third share.

Lufthansa’s pilots to strike on April 2-4, Lufthansa calls on the Vereinigung Cockpit pilotsโ€™ union to resume talks

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) is facing another strike by its pilots, represented by theย Vereinigung Cockpit pilotsโ€™ union (VC), from April 2 through 4 next week. The labor dispute involves pay and retirement issues.

Read the full report from Reuters: CLICK HERE

Lufthansa has called for renewed talks to end the dispute and has issued this statement:

Lufthansa logo-2

Lufthansa has called on the Vereinigung Cockpit pilotsโ€™ union (VC) to resume joint talks as soon as possible. โ€œWe still have four and a half days to avoid further disruptions for our customers, which would occur with the strike that has been announced,โ€ said Dr Bettina Volkens, Chief Officer Human Resources and Legal, Deutsche Lufthansa AG. โ€œWe are willing to continue the discussions at any time and have laid the groundwork for negotiations with the new offer for the wage settlement and the offer concerning early retirement from flight service. With the goodwill of everyone involved, we should be able to avoid a strike,โ€ Ms Volkens continued.

VC has announced a three-day strike for employees of Lufthansa German Airlines, Lufthansa Cargo and Germanwings at every German airport from April 2-4.

Although Lufthansa continues to hope for a negotiated solution, it is working flat out to keep the effects of a strike on its customers to a minimum. โ€œWe greatly regret the fact that this strike from April 2-4 may prevent us from bringing our passengers to their destination or back home on time. We will do everything to take care of those affected as well as we possibly can. Wherever possible, we will offer alternative travel options with. At the same time, we are still working to solve the collective bargaining dispute,โ€ Ms Volkens said.

Lufthansa will, in any event, inform its customers in good time about the details of flight cancellations, rebooking options and alternative travel arrangements at LH.com. The Company will also send information about changes to flights by email and text message to customers who have provided their contact details.

Lufthansa made VC an improved offer for the wage settlement. It provides for a sustainable pay increase of 5.2 per cent for the period from May 1, 2012 to December 31, 2015 as well as a one-off payment for all pilots at Lufthansa German Airlines, Lufthansa Cargo and Germanwings. A pay freeze is planned for the first six months of this period. There is to be a one-off payment of โ‚ฌ2,000 for the period from November 1, 2012 to December 31, 2013. This corresponds to 1.2 per cent of the pilotsโ€™ total remuneration. For the period from January ย 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015, salaries are ultimately to rise in two stages by a total of 5.2 per cent: by 3 per cent retroactively as of January ย 1, 2014, and by another 2.1 per cent as of July 1, 2014. The original plan of linking salary increases to the Companyโ€™s performance has been dropped. Lufthansa has therefore accepted key demands made by VC. This offer means that the pilots would make a contribution to ensuring the Groupโ€™s future viability comparable with that of other groups of employees.

Lufthansa also offered to ensure that pilots can continue to retire early in future. The offer safeguards the positions of all employees who joined Lufthansa before January 1, 2014. As before, these employees can receive up to 60 per cent of their last gross salary until they reach the earliest possible statutory retirement age of 63. From 2017, the earliest possible age at which pilots can retire from flight service at Lufthansa German Airlines will be raised, depending on the length of service, from 55 for more senior to up to 60 for younger employees. Employees who have been with the Company for thirty years or more are not affected at all by the changes. Pilots at Lufthansa Cargo and Germanwings can already leave flight service only when they reach 60 years of age, and then make use of transitional benefits.

The previous wage agreement also stipulated that Lufthansa German Airlines cockpit staff had to reach an average age of 58 for early retirement. Lufthansaโ€™s offer now raises the agreed average early retirement age within three years from 58 to 61 years, starting in 2016. The effective average age for taking early retirement in 2013 was already 58.9 years. This also reflects the general societal trend towards longer working lives.

For pilots who start or have started work at Lufthansa after January 1, 2014, it will still be possible to retire early from flight service. The matter of financing these benefits is the subject of future talks with VC.

For all employees, the offer still includes employer-financed insurance against incapacity for flight service.

United Airlines honors its top 100 employees with a special airplane

United 737-900ER One Hundred logo (United)(LRW)

United Airlines (Chicago) Boeing 737-900 ER (N69818) took to the skies on Friday (March 28) to honor the company’s top 100 employees. The new Boeing 737-900 ER features the company’s “United 100” logo on the exterior. The airline designed the United 100 program to recognize 100 employees nominated and selected by their co-workers for exemplary performance or achievements that support the cornerstones of the company’s business plan. Being honored as a United 100 recipient is the company’s highest honor for employee recognition.

The United 100 plane also features a plaque inscribed with the winners’ names on a wall inside. The airline plans to update the plaque with the annual winners’ names each year.

United 737-900ER One Hundred Plaque (United)(LRW)

United this week honored these top employees at its second annual “United 100” celebration in downtown Chicago. At the luncheon, Smisek surprised the winners with an announcement that the newest aircraft in the company’s fleet would be dedicated in their honor.

The winners also each received a crystal award and 100,000 MileagePlus miles. The 100 winners, who represent every work group in the company, and their guests came from throughout the United States as well as nine international locations for the event, where United’s senior leadership congratulated and recognized them for their great efforts to go above and beyond for customers, co-workers and the company.

In 2013, 5,612 employees were nominated for United 100. The 100 annual winners are selected by their divisions from among the approximately 400 quarterly winners, who are chosen by divisions. All of United’s more than 85,000 employees are eligible for the program.

Additionally, United Airlines is expanding its extensive trans-Pacific network this weekend, connecting its San Francisco hub with Taipei, Taiwan, beginning today (March 29), and launching a second daily flight between Houston and Tokyo tomorrow (March 30).

United will host inaugural gate events in both San Francisco and Houston, marking the importance of these flights to tourism and economic development.

United will operate both services with Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The aircraft flying San Francisco-Taipei will offer 269 seats โ€“ eight in United Global First, 40 in United BusinessFirst and 221 in United Economy, including 113 extra-legroom United Economy Plus seats.

The aircraft flying Houston-Tokyo will offer 267 seats โ€“ 50 in United BusinessFirst and 217 in United Economy, including 72 United Economy Plus seats.

In United Global First and United BusinessFirst, United offers customers seats that recline into fully flat beds, personal on-demand entertainment, in-seat power and USB ports, enabling travelers to rest or to be productive in-flight. Customers in United Economy also enjoy personal, on-demand entertainment at every seat and in-seat power.

United is the only U.S. airline to offer the comfort of flat-bed seats in its premium cabins on every long-haul, international flight from the continental United States. The airline also offers more extra-legroom economy seating than any U.S. airline.

These Taipei and Tokyo additions come as United plans to introduce three-times-weekly Boeing 787 service June 9 between San Francisco and Chengdu, China, pending government approval. This nonstop service would be the first by a U.S. airline from the United States to mainland China, beyond Beijing and Shanghai. The company also plans to offer, subject to government approval, nonstop Boeing 787 service between Los Angeles and Melbourne, Australia, six times weekly beginning on October 26.

With these changes, United also operated its last scheduled Boeing 747-400 from Los Angeles last night (March 28) to Sydney. The type may revisit LAX again as a substitution.

American Eagle’s ALPA pilots reject the “concessionary contract” by 70%

American Eagle Airlines’ (Envoy) (subsidiary of the American Airlines Group) (Dallas/Fort Worth) pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), have rejected by a 70-30 percent margin the “concessionary contract”. ALPA issued this statement:

ALPA logo-1

American Eagle pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Intโ€™l (ALPA) expressed their collective will and on March 28 rejected a concessionary contract proposed by American Airlines Group (AAG). With 92 percent of the eligible pilots casting their ballots, 70 percent voted against ratification of the contract.

โ€œThe Eagle pilots made a clear choice today, and it was not an easy one,โ€ said Capt. Bill Sprague, chairman of the Eagle ALPA Master Executive Council. โ€œDespite threats from AAG management that they would seek other express carriers to conduct our flying, todayโ€™s vote demonstrates that the demands for contract concessions were not acceptable. Todayโ€™s vote clearly shows that pilots can, and will, vote against any agreement that is not in their best interests.โ€

The proposed contract changes were a combination of pay freezes, reductions in per diem, and increased health-care costs in exchange for a promise to refleet the airline and enhance the existing agreement to transfer pilots to American Airlines. These concessions were in addition to the $43 million the pilots gave the company during bankruptcy last year.

Having previously worked under a 16-year contract that concluded with AMRโ€™s bankruptcy filing, the American Eagle pilots have not seen meaningful contractual gains since 2004. New-hire pilot pay begins at less than $23,000 per year. Had the contract been approved, first officers would have been capped at about $38,000 per year after four years of service.

โ€œManagement has said many times to us that this agreement is their โ€˜bottom lineโ€™ offer and believe that they will be able to get the same cost savings from another provider,โ€ Sprague said. โ€œWe question whether any regional airline is able to attract and retain pilots by offering poverty-level wages. American Eagle already has a career progression arrangement with American, and yet, due to a lack of pilots, itโ€™s unable to perform the regional flying that American Airlines desires. Other airlines are experiencing the same problem.โ€

According to Reuters, American Eagle (Envoy) will shrink.

Alaska Airlines becomes the first U.S. airline to allow self-tagging of bags on select routes

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) will be the first U.S. airline to allow self-tagging of bags from home on select introductory routes. The airline issued this statement:

Self-tag online debuts on April 21 for passengers traveling nonstop between Seattle/Tacoma and San Diego, Anchorage or Juneau, Alaska, with plans to expand the option for customers traveling from other airports later this summer. This launch follows the completion of a successful pilot program, which was offered to customers traveling between Seattle/Tacoma and Hawaii in 2013.

Starting on April 21, travelers flying to or from any of the four debut cities will receive a pre-trip email with a link to request a free reusable bag tag holder by mail. Tag holders will also be available to pick up at each of the four airports. Passengers who elect to self-tag will enjoy a designated Self-Tag Expressโ„ข lane when they arrive at the airport.

Alaska Self-Tag Express logo

How self-tag online works:

Book a trip at http://www.alaskaair.com.
Follow instructions in your pre-trip email to request a bag tag holder by mail or pick up a holder in person at one of the four participating airports.
Check in online up to 24 hours before your flight and follow the instructions to print a bag tag at home.
Insert printed bag tag into the tag holder.
At the airport, follow signs for Self-Tag Expressโ„ข lanes.
Show the agent your boarding pass, identification and drop off your bags.

Alaska Airlines is the first U.S. carrier to launch self-bag tagging from home, another chapter in the carrier’s long history of pioneering technologies and innovations to make flying easier. Alaska was the first airline in North America to sell tickets over the Internet, and the first in the world to allow customers to check in and print boarding passes online. Last year, the carrier installed kiosks with self-tagging printers at 10 airport locations including Seattle/Tacoma, Anchorage and Portland, Oregon.

China Airlines introduces a “Visiting Indigenous Tribes of Taiwan” decorated Airbus A330-300 logo jet

China Airlines (Taipei) this month introduced a logo jet dedicated to the ethnic diversity in Taiwan. The airline issued this statement on the special Masalu! Taiwan Airbus A330-300:

The โ€œVisiting Indigenous Tribes of Taiwan” liveried aircraft is the result of a partnership between Taiwanโ€™s Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan and China Airlines. The pictured B-18358 made its inaugural flight on March 11 from Taoyuan Airport to Auckland via Sydney. China Airlines flies to Auckland seven times a week, promoting Taiwanโ€™s indigenous culture to the world. Continuing with China Airlinesโ€™ Taiwan Culture and Creativity series, the new liveried aircraft is the only one of its kind in the world, displaying details of a traditional wedding of the Paiwan tribe. The drawings come from renowned indigenous artist Sakuliu Pvavaljungโ€™s Wedding Celebration series, shown in the public for the first time. These drawings of joyful celebration welcome people to enjoy the diversity Taiwan has to offer.

The liveried aircraft is an Airbus A330-300, with a capacity of 30 Business Class seats and 277 Economy Class seats. There are illustrations on the cabin interior and designs on the head-rest covers containing indigenous elements, and inserts in the seat pockets introducing the livery on the plane. The aircraft will mainly serve Australia and New Zealand routes, along with Japan, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia routes. In July 2013, Taiwan and New Zealand established the Agreement between New Zealand and the Separate Customs of Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu on Economic Cooperation (ANZTEC), and it is the first agreement of its type to incorporate a chapter on indigenous cooperation. Taiwanโ€™s indigenous people and New Zealandโ€™s Mฤori both belong to the Austronesian language family, and research has shown that they have similar genetic characteristics. Because of their close links both culturally and genetically, Taiwan and New Zealand agreed to strengthen ties between the two indigenous groups. Therefore, the first flight for โ€œVisiting Indigenous Tribes of Taiwan Liveried Aircraftโ€ was to Auckland, New Zealand, marking historical significance.

The inaugural flight ceremony began with a vibrant Paiwan tribe wedding ceremony, followed by a melodious performance of โ€œSong of the Seaโ€ by Taipei City Indigenous Youth and Children Chorus, together with China Airlines pilots, cabin crew, ground staff and maintenance crew of indigenous descent. The attendees at the unveiling of the liveried airplane included Wu Den-yih, Vice President of Taiwan, Lin,Chiang-I (Mayaw.Dongi), Minister of The Council of Indigenous Peoples, Sun Huang-hsiang, Chairmain of China Airlines, and Lin Peng-liang, President of China Airlines. Each passenger on the inaugural flight received a passport cover, bag, and deck of cards with indigenous print, and a Visiting Taiwanโ€™s Indigenous Tribes notebook.

The illustrations on โ€œVisiting Indigenous Tribes of Taiwan Liveried Aircraftโ€ come from the father of modern indigenous art, Sakuliu Pvavaljung. They are from his series of works titled Wedding Celebration, depicting unique marriage traditions from the Paiwan tribe. The illustrations chosen best capture the essence of these works, and include the sending of dowry from the groom on the right side of the fuselage, and the carrying of the bride and the swing ceremony on the left side of the fuselage. The logo โ€œMASALU! TAIWANโ€ on the body of the plane uses the Paiwan greeting โ€œMasaluโ€ to welcome people to Taiwan.

The indigenous people of Taiwan are few and precious, numbering approximately 530,000 and constituting two percent of the population. The government of Taiwan officially recognizes 14 peoples, and each has preserved their own culture, language and customs. The Council of Indigenous Peoples has partnered with China Airlines on a liveried aircraft in order to promote the rich culture of Taiwanโ€™s indigenous peoples, and to draw people from all over the world for a taste of Taiwanese aesthetics. The inaugural flight not only echoes New Zealand and Taiwan bringing tourism ties closer through the ANZTEC agreement, but also expands on economic development in Taiwanโ€™s tribes.

As a leading player in Taiwanโ€™s aviation industry, China Airlines promotes Taiwanโ€™s strength as a cultural hub, and in recent years has released 3 launched aircraft from its Taiwan Culture and Creativity series. The first liveried airplane, โ€œLove & Hug,โ€ features works from artist Jimmy Liao, in which little children are locked in loving embrace with protected animals and planet earth. The second liveried airplane, โ€œTaiwan Tourism,โ€ a collaboration with Taiwanโ€™s Tourism Bureau, shows LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability), ecology, romance, cuisine, shopping, culture and other features of Taiwan tourism offerings with a creative cultural flair. The third liveried airplane, โ€œVisiting Indigenous Tribes of Taiwan,โ€ displays the customs of Taiwanโ€™s indigenous people, showcases Taiwanโ€™s cultural creativity.
