The FAA and Boeing complete their joint review of the 787’s critical systems

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) have completed a comprehensive review of the 787’s critical systems. The joint review, initiated in January 2013, included an examination of the processes for the design, certification and production of the 787-8. The review’s findings validate the integrity of the airplane’s design and confirm the strength of the processes used to identify and correct issues that emerged before and after the airplane’s certification.

The review concludes that the 787 meets the intended high level of safety expected by the FAA and Boeing. The report includes recommendations aimed at further strengthening the FAA and Boeing’s processes.

“We welcomed the opportunity presented by this joint review of the 787 and its in-service performance,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEOย Ray Conner. “The findings validate our confidence in both the design of the airplane and the disciplined process used to identify and correct in-service issues as they arise. I am grateful for the hard work of the joint review team and for its recommendations, which will allow us to further improve our processes as we move forward.”

The review team outlined four recommended improvements for Boeing. Three of the recommendations focus on improving the flow of information, standards and expectations between the company and its suppliers. Boeing has already taken significant steps to implement these recommendations.

The fourth recommendation encourages Boeing to continue implementing and maturing the gated processes for development programs.

“Gated process” refers to the disciplined criteria followed as a new airplane model is developed. This ensures a sufficient level of maturity is gained before a program proceeds to key milestones such as design completion, production start and entry into service.

Boeing has made a range of improvements to its airplane development processes since the start of the 787 program. These efforts included a restructuring last year to bring all commercial airplane development programs under one umbrella organization.

Two objects are spotted floating in the Indian Ocean

Malaysia logo-1

Two large objects have been spotted by satellite floating in the Indian Ocean around 1,500 miles southwest of Perth, Australia. It will take several days to confirm if they are from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH 370.

The Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is leading this search of the Indian Ocean.

Read the full story from Reuters: CLICK HERE

Malaysia Airlines issued this statement concerning the debris:

1.ย ย ย ย Australian satellite images

At 10:00 this morning, the Prime Minister received a call from the Prime Minister of Australia, informing him that โ€˜two possible objects related to the searchโ€™ for MH370 had been identified in the Southern Indian Ocean. The Australian authorities in Kuala Lumpur have also briefed me on the situation, and the Australian Foreign Minister has spoken to the Foreign Minister of Malaysia.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) continues co-ordinating the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft within Australiaโ€™s search and rescue area, with assistance from the Australian Defence Force, the New Zealand Air Force, and the US Navy.

AMSAโ€™s Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) Australia has received satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search for MH370.

RCC Australia received an expert assessment of commercial satellite imagery today. The images were captured by satellite. They may not be related to the aircraft.

The assessment of these images was provided by the Australian Geospatial Intelligence Organisation as a possible indication of debris southwest of Perth.

As a result of this information, four aircraft have been re-orientated to an area 2,500 kilometres southwest of Perth.

A Royal Australian Air Force P-3 Orion aircraft arrived in the area at about 10:50AM.

Another 3 aircraft have been tasked by RCC Australia to the area, including a second RAAF Orion, a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion, and a US Navy P-8 Poseidon.

The Poseidon was expected to arrive early this afternoon. The second RAAF Orion was expected to depart RAAF Base Pearce, Perth, mid-afternoon. The New Zealand Orion was due to depart this afternoon.

An RAAF C-130 Hercules aircraft has been tasked by RCC Australia to drop datum marker buoys to assist in drift modelling. They will provide an on-going reference point if the task of relocating the objects becomes protracted.

A merchant ship that responded to a shipping broadcast issued by RCC Australia on Monday was also expected to arrive in the area this afternoon.

The Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Success is en route to the area but is some days away. The ship is well equipped to recover any objects located and proven to be from MH370.

Every effort is being made to locate the objects seen in the satellite imagery. It must be stressed that these sightings, while credible, are still to be confirmed.

2.ย ย ย ย Assets deployed

The search for MH370 is a multinational effort. I will now give you an update on the assets which have been deployed.

During the course of this operation, the Chief of the Defence Force has spoken to his counterparts from countries including:

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Australia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  China

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  India

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Indonesia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Japan

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maldives

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Nepal

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  New Zealand

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Singapore

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Thailand

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Vietnam

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  The UK

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  And the USA.

All were very supportive, and all offered their assistance. As the focus of the search has moved from the South China Sea and Straits of Malacca to the northern and southern corridors, our international partners have continued to provide whatever support they can.

A number of assets have been deployed at different phases of the search and rescue operation.

Currently, there are 18 ships, 29 aircraft and 6 ship-borne helicopters deployed along the northern and southern corridors, as follows:

Aircraft

In the northern corridor, there are 4 aircraft:

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  2 from Malaysia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 from Japan

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  And 1 from the US.

In the southern corridor, there are 25 aircraft:

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  2 from Malaysia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  5 from Australia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  3 from China

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  4 from Indonesia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  2 from India

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  4 from Japan

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 from New Zealand

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  2 from South Korea

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 from the UAE

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  And 1 from the USA.

Ships

All 18 ships are in the southern corridor:

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  6 from Malaysia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  1 from Australia

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  5 from China

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  And 6 from Indonesia.

This deployment includes 6 helicopters:

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  3 from Malaysia, and 3 from China.

Until we are certain that we have located MH370, search and rescue operations will continue in both corridors. I can confirm that Malaysia is sending 2 aircraft to Kazakhstan, and the UK is planning to send 1 ship to the southern corridor.

In addition to the assets I just listed above, a number of countries in the northern corridor are carrying out search and rescue operations within their own territory:

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  China is using every means possible, including 21 satellites, to search the area within its borders, and is ready to send more ships and aircraft wherever they are needed.

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  In Cambodia, 4 helicopters are conducting search operations within Cambodian territory.

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  The Laos Air Force is carrying out search operations within Laos.

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Singapore are using their International Information Fusion Centre, where a Malaysian representative is stationed, to notify mariners and help with the search.

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  The Thai military are conducting search operations in the northern part of Thailand with all available aircraft.

โ€ขย ย ย ย ย ย ย  And Vietnam are conducting search operations within their territory using an unspecified number of aircraft.

Together this represents a significant international force deployment. I am thankful for the co-operation of our partners as we continue to focus on finding MH370.

3.ย ย ย ย Family care

The high-level team I announced yesterday is leaving for Beijing this evening.

I would also like to confirm that representatives from the Malaysian government spoke to the families who were present here yesterday.

In addition, the Prime Ministerโ€™s Special Envoy to China, and the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, will lead a briefing today for the Chinese families who are here in Kuala Lumpur.

Also in attendance will be the Department of Civil Aviation, the Armed Forces, the Royal Malaysia Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and MAS. A similar briefing will also be held for the other families.

4.ย ย ย ย Concluding remarks

For families around the world, the one piece of information they want most is the information we just donโ€™t have: the location of MH370.

Our primary focus has always been to find the aircraft. And with every passing day, our efforts have intensified.

Yesterday I said that we wanted to reduce the area of the search. We now have a credible lead. There remains much work to be done to deploy the assets. This work will continue overnight.

Lufthansa Group reports annual income of $435.7 million

Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa) (Frankfurt) reported 2013 annual net income of โ‚ฌ313 million ($435.7 million), down 75 percent from the โ‚ฌ1.22 billion profit reported in the same period a year ago. Here is the full report:

Deutsche Lufthansa AG has achieved the targeted improvement in earnings well. Adjusted for non-recurring effects, the operating profit rose year on year by 62 per cent to EUR 1.042bn (previous year: EUR 643m). The reported operating profit came to EUR 697m, having totalled EUR 839m the previous year. A comparison of the reported results is of little informational value, however. The previous yearโ€™s reported result was largely boosted by non-recurring income from transferring operations at Austrian Airlines, while the result for 2013 was depressed by restructuring and project costs for the installation of the new Lufthansa Business Class seats.

Lufthansa Group revenue was stable at EUR 30.0bn (previous year: EUR 30.1bn). At EUR 313 m, net profit for the year, which last year also included a profit of EUR 631 m from the sale of shares in Amadeus IT Holding, S.A., was lower, as expected (previous year: EUR 1.2 bn).

Christoph Franz, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, said: โ€œWe have strengthened the earnings power of the Lufthansa Group again last year. This is driven by the earnings performance in the passenger business, where all Airlines rose significantly. This performance trend is sustainable. It is based on a continuous improvement in the cost structure and on the billions invested in new products and services. Customer feedback here is extremely positive. This performance in our core business segment has prompted us to propose to the Annual General Meeting that a dividend of EUR 0.45 per share be paid.โ€

Lufthansa and Germanwings boost earnings power and increase profit

Lufthansa and Germanwings increased their operating profit last year to EUR 265m โ€“ an increase of EUR 240m and thus the most visible earnings improvement in the Group. Adjusted for restructuring costs, the increase even came to EUR 340m. The persistent implementation of Score projects at Lufthansa, including the transfer of European direct traffic outside the hubs in Frankfurt and Munich to Germanwings, had a positive effect on earnings. The new aircraft, which continually join the fleet, are being fitted with the latest cabin products across all travel classes, which has already led to greater customer satisfaction and has also had an impact on the bottom line. These state-of-the-art aircraft are also considerably quieter and more fuel-efficient, and stand out for their lower operating costs. In 2013 alone the Group ordered 167 new aircraft worth EUR 23bn. While the revenue per available seat-kilometre (RASK) fell slightly due to currency movements and also because of disproportionate growth in Economy Class, costs per available seat-kilometre (CASK) were reduced even faster, and so the overall result improved considerably.

The passenger business overall performed well in 2013, contributing EUR 495m (previous year: EUR 556m, including one-off effects) to the Groupโ€™s operating result. Swiss accounted for a substantial share of EUR 226m, a year-on-year increase of EUR 22m. Austrian Airlines generated a profit in 2013 without tailwind from special items for the first time since joining the Lufthansa Group. The companyโ€™s profit of EUR 25m for the financial year is EUR 178m lower than in the previous year. However, the previous yearโ€™s positive result was solely due to non-recurring effects in connection with the transfer of flight operations to Tyrolean Airways.ย

Lufthansa Technik and LSG Sky Chefs report record profits

All of the Groupโ€™s business segments were profitable in 2013. Lufthansa Technik and LSG Sky Chefs generated operating results of EUR 404m (previous year: EUR 328m) and EUR 105m (previous year: EUR 101m) respectively, which were both the highest earnings in their corporate history. The IT Services segment also increased its operating profit from EUR 20m in 2012 to EUR 36m โ€“ a rise of 80 per cent.

Effective cost management secured a positive result for Lufthansa Cargo, despite weak market demand and persistently high price pressure in the freight market. Revenue declined by nine per cent, but the company kept its operating margin stable. The Logistics segment generated an operating profit of EUR 77m (previous year: EUR 105m).

Group pursues restructuring undiminished and anticipates a further increase in the operating profit to between EUR 1.3bn and EUR 1.5bn in 2014ย

โ€œScore is on track. We have achieved our profit and restructuring targets for 2013. And we have created the conditions that will enable us to keep increasing our profits in the years ahead. We are working on further measures to improve earnings, which will enable us to cope with greater headwinds, too,โ€ said Simone Menne, Member of the Executive Board and CFO at Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

The Group amended its depreciation policy, which will have an effect on the operating result from 2014 onwards. As many of its competitors have already done, the Company extended the depreciation period for its aircraft from 12 to 20 years, and reduced their residual book value from 15 to 5 per cent of the purchase price. This alteration corrects the effective useful life and the depreciation of the aircraft and ensures that they are presented correctly in the balance sheet. In the new financial year, the operating result is to rise by EUR 340m due to the change in depreciation policy, in 2015; it will increase by EUR 350m.

This change to the method of depreciating aircraft has no material effect on the Groupโ€™s economic strength. Its effects are felt solely at an accounting level. โ€œScore therefore still aims to boost the operating profit sustainably by EUR 1.5bn compared with 2011,โ€ said Menne. Applied to the earnings target, this meant that the Group now needed to increase its operating profit to EUR 2.65bn by 2015, she added. The change would also lead to a review of the Groupโ€™s dividend policy, since this was also dependent on the operating result. Simone Menne said: โ€œWe will review our dividend policy this year. However, it is clear that we will continue to let shareholders participate reasonably on our profits.โ€

The Group expects a positive business performance in the current year, too. As in 2013, the higher results should come largely from the passenger business. The Groupโ€™s adjusted operating result should therefore increase again by around 40 per cent and would come to between EUR 1.7bn and EUR 1.9bn for 2014. The reported operating result of the Lufthansa Group, including restructuring and project costs, should reach EUR 1.3bn to EUR 1.5bn at the end of the year. Christoph Franz said: โ€œI am convinced that the Lufthansa Group and its staff will continue to successfully hold their own in an industry which will continue to change rapidly and consolidate further. The company has already become noticeably more dynamic and is creating value โ€“ for customers, employees and shareholders in equal measure. The Lufthansa Group and its companies are well prepared for the challenges ahead.โ€

2013 in figures

Revenue in 2013 remained stable at EUR 30.0bn, a fall of 0.4 per cent compared with the previous year. Overall, the Groupโ€™s operating income declined slightly to EUR 32.2bn in the reporting period, a fall of 2.4 per cent. Traffic revenue declined by 0.9 per cent to EUR 24.6bn. There was no change in operating expenses last year, which came to EUR 31.4bn (-0.1 per cent). Fuel costs fell by EUR 334m to EUR 7.1bn, a decline of 4.5 per cent. Included in this amount is a contribution of EUR -125m from price hedging. Fees and charges fell by 0.3 per cent on the previous year, in particular due to a lower number of flights.

In 2013, the Lufthansa Group generated an operating result of EUR 697m. To facilitate comparison, the operating result originally reported for the previous year was adjusted by EUR 315m following the amendments to accounting standard IAS 19. Following this adjustment, the result for 2012 came to EUR 839m.

The net result for the period fell by EUR 915m to EUR 313m. Earnings per share sank to EUR 0.68.

The Lufthansa Group invested EUR 2.5bn in the reporting period, EUR 156m more than in the previous year. Of the total, EUR 2.1bn went on modernising and maintaining the fleet. Cash flow from operating activities came to EUR 3.3bn and free cash flow (cash flow from operating activities less net capital expenditure) to EUR 1.3bn. For 2013, the Group had a by EUR 256m reduced net debt of EUR 1.7bn. Following the application of new accounting standards (IAS 19), the equity ratio went up 4.1 percentage points to 21.0 per cent.

The Malaysian Government is coordinating an unprecedented international search effort covering 2.24 million square nautical miles. With this simply enormous area we cannot determine how long it will take to locate the aircraft.

Considering these challenges, our caregivers have informed the family members of the missing passengers and crew that we have taken the decision to continue to provide information and assistanceย through the further enhanced Family Support Centre (FSC) based in Kuala Lumpur which has been operational since March 8, 2014 rather than the various Family Assistance Centers (FACs).

The Family Support Centre will continue to proactively provide relatives waiting for news at home with daily updates. In addition to personal phone calls, Malaysia Airlines will now send out SMS blasts with brief updates to the families. We have also set up an email address for family members as a channel for them to communicate with us. Updates via the Malaysia Airlines website are also available.

This Family Support Centre will be open round-the-clock and will house family support representatives trained to assistย those who are seeking answers and further information. The representatives will be divided into four shifts with ten staff handling each shift. This will ensure that someone is available to attend to the families at all times. The centre will also have Mandarin speaking personnel.

Below are the toll-free numbers that has been set-up for eight different countries. A back-up number is also given to the families in the event they are not able to reach the toll-free number. The number to call to get in touch with this centre is +603 8777 5770.

All this while, the families have always been briefed first, followed by the media and then the public whenever new information surfaces. However, the often conflicting information and wild speculation have caused a major distress to the families.

The Airline continues to work closely with the authorities and we appreciate the help we are receiving from all local and international agencies during this critical and traumatic period.

Our top priority remains to provide any and all assistance to the families of the passengers and crew.

QANTAS Airways responds to untrue claims against the carrier

QANTAS Airways (Sydney) has issued this “Questions and Answers” statement concerning industry rumors about the carrier:

CLAIM: Qantas aircraft are less safe when serviced at overseas heavy maintenance facilities.

FACT:ย This is not true. The aviation industry is one of the most highly regulated industries in the world. All maintenance on Australian aircraft needs to be conducted at facilities approved by Australiaโ€™s aviation safety regulator, CASA.

The unionโ€™s claims are actually more than 10 years old. They have already been investigated by Qantas and CASA, and the facilities continue to be approved by CASA and used by the world’s leading airlines.

This particular union has repeatedly played the safety card against Qantas and was found in the Federal Court to be using safety claims to pursue industrial issues.

The majority of Qantasโ€™ maintenance is done in Australia. Our A380s and B747s have their heavy maintenance conducted overseas at world-class heavy maintenance facilities. Regardless of geography, all our maintenance is done at facilities approved by CASA and to Qantasโ€™ high standards.

As with all elements of aviation, there are multiple fail-safes to account for the very small amount of human error that may occur โ€“ so suggesting any mistake is a potential catastrophe is alarmist and disingenuous.

CLAIM: Qantas does not have oversight of the maintenance conducted at overseas facilities.

FACT:ย Qantas sends teams of employees from our Engineering division to oversee heavy maintenance conducted outside of Australia, including senior managers and support staff. The senior manager is often an experienced Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

All maintenance on Qantas aircraft that is conducted at overseas facilities is done to Qantasโ€™ high standards and at facilities approved by CASA.

CLAIM: The safety of a Qantas Aircraft was jeopardised by maintenance conducted in Hong Kong in 2008 with engine the engine not bolted on correctly.

FACT:ย Qantas disputes the unionโ€™s interpretation of this incident and categorically rejects suggestions that the safety of the aircraft was at risk as a result of what was a minor maintenance issue.

Firstly the issues relate to washers โ€“ not bolts. One engine had three of the eight washers installed upside down. Two engines had one washer installed instead of two on the bolts. (Note โ€“ Boeing recommends only one washer to be used.)

While this was not in strictly keeping with Qantas maintenance manual, it had no bearing on the safety of the aircraft at all. This was looked at by CASA at the time and found no need to investigate further.

The claim that the engines could have fallen off the aircraft during the flight as a consequence is false and alarmist.

CLAIM: Qantas executives have enjoyed massive pay increases, taking executive packages to a ratio of 140:1 to Qantas workerโ€™s wages.

FACT:ย Qantas executives have not had โ€˜massive pay increasesโ€™. In fact, executive pay has decreased since 2010. Alan Joyce will take home 36 per cent less this year compared to last year and there is currently a bonus and pay freeze in place for executives and all employees. The Qantas Board has also taken a reduction in fees.

Qantas is not aware how the union came up with the 140:1 ratio, however it is incorrect.

CLAIM: Half of Qantas workers earn less than $50,000 a year.

FACT:ย The claim that half of Qantas employees earn less than $50,000 a year is completely false. Less than 10 per cent of Qantas employees earn less than $50,000 and this includes both full time and part time employees. The majority of part time workers also earn more than $50,000 a year.

CLAIM: Hangar 245 in Sydney was vacated in 2006 and has been empty ever since.

FACT:ย This is not true. We have invested millions of dollars upgrading the hangar and it is currently being used by our line maintenance engineers.

Boeing starts the expansion of the 737 Commercial Delivery Center at Boeing Field

????????????????????????????????????

Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) has kicked off expansion of its 737 Commercial Delivery Center (CDC) at Boeing Field inย Seattle. The project more than doubles the space that will be available for customers and groups supporting increased 737 deliveries.

The expanded CDC will be more than 90,000 square feet and include a new three-story building, as well as new delivery and departure areas with three covered jetways. The design features an open, airy look with large windows overlooking the Boeing Field flight line. The CDC expansion is the latest of many investments Boeing is making across the Puget Sound region and in the future of the 737 program.

Production of the 737 is set to increase to 42 airplanes per month in April and to 47 airplanes per month in 2017, an increase in output of nearly 50 percent since 2010. Deliveries of the 737 MAX, with the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines and other efficiency enhancements like Advanced Technology winglets, will also begin in 2017 at the upgraded facility.

Plans are in place to ensure seamless deliveries to 737 customers during construction, which includes the demolition of one building. The CDC expansion is scheduled for completion in mid-2015.
