Japan Airlines (JAL) Aeroflot Russian Airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a strategic cooperation agreement to pursue commercial opportunities which will greatly benefit the customers of both airlines by providing more options for travel between Russia and Japan.

Since the relaxation of visa requirements to the nationals of Japan and Russia from January 1, 2017, the demand between the two countries has been steadily increasing and the two airlines have agreed to work together to further stimulate travel between the two countries.

As a first step, JAL and Aeroflot have agreed to start codeshare cooperation between Japan and Russia as well as Aeroflotโ€™s domestic flights, and JALโ€™s domestic and international flights. The first stage of the codeshare cooperation is planned to be implemented after fiscal year 2018.

In addition to the codeshare cooperation, JAL and Aeroflot will pursue the development of the partnership in various areas, including frequent flyer programs, airport relocation, while considering a joint business in the future.

Japan Airlines currently operates four weekly flights to Moscow Domodedovo Airport from Tokyo Narita Airport using Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Between July to October 2017, the frequency had temporarily increased to seven flights per week to accommodate the demand during the peak summer season in 2017.

Aeroflot operates daily nonstop flights year-round from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport. Flights from Moscow are operated with Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines have announced an order for four Boeing 777F freighters โ€“ the world’s largest and longest-range twin-engine cargo jet โ€“ in a deal valued at more than $1.3 billion at list prices.

The deal includes a new order for two freighters. It also includes two freighters the airline announced as a commitment in June that finalized into a firm order and posted on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website this month.

The 777 Freighter is based on the 777-200LR (Longer Range) passenger jet and can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload of 112 tons (102 metric tonnes or 102,000 kg).

This order pushes 777 net orders this year to 57 โ€“ 37 of them for the current-generation 777 airplane โ€“ providing further support to a smooth production transition to the new 777X.

Ethiopian Cargo is the largest network cargo operator in Africa with six 777 and two 757 Freighters serving 39 cargo destinations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. Ethiopian Cargo opened a state-of-the-art cargo terminal in June 2017 that gives the carrier an annual capacity of one million tons.

Boeing, FedEx Express are collaborating on the latest ecoDemonstrator Program testing

Boeing-FedEx "ecoDemonstrator Program"

On July 6, 2017 Boeing made this announcement. Now the program is ready to proceed with a dedicated freighter.

As part of the continuing effort to accelerate aerospace innovation, Boeing and FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation and the world’s largest express transportation company, will work together to fly the next ecoDemonstrator.

Starting in 2018, a new Boeing 777 Freighter made for FedEx Express will test emerging technologies, such as propulsion advancements and flight deck innovations.

The ecoDemonstrator program, now in its fifth iteration, serves as a series of flying testbeds designed to improve the environmental performance and safety of future airplanes.

“The ecoDemonstrator program is focused on harvesting exciting new technologies that will benefit our airline customers, the flying public and the environment,” said Mike Sinnett, vice president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes Product Development.

The collaboration on the newest ecoDemonstrator project is the latest in a 38-year relationship between Boeing and FedEx.

“FedEx is committed to developing and implementing innovative solutions that connect the world responsibly and resourcefully,” said David Cunningham, president & CEO, FedEx Express. “We’re proud to work with Boeing and use our 777 Freighter to play a key role in bringing future benefits to the entire aviation industry.”

This round of ecoDemonstrator testing includes installing a compact thrust reverser developed by Boeing designed to save fuel, flight deck improvements that can improve efficient operations in and out of busy airports, and flying prototype airplane parts using cutting-edge manufacturing techniques that reduce material waste.

Flight testing is scheduled to last approximately three months before the airplane returns to the FedEx fleet.

UPS adds the Boeing 747-8F freighter

The new Boeing 747-8F Intercontinental Freighter

UPS Airlines is adding the newer and larger Boeing 747-8F Intercontinental Freighter to its Boeing 747-400F freighter fleet.

The first to be delivered was N605UP which was handed over on September 29, 2017.

The pictured N607UP completed its first flight on October 6, 2017. The new freighter became airborne in about 3,500 feet at Paine Field near Everett, WA.

In October 2016 Boeing announcedย an order for 14 747-8 Freighters for UPS. The agreement also includes an option to purchase an additional 14 of the cargo airplanes.

The 747-8s will enable UPS to begin a cascade of aircraft route reassignments that will add significant air capacity to the companyโ€™s busiest lanes, thereby optimizing global air network capacity well beyond the impact of adding new cargo jets.

The 14 aircraft are to be delivered between 2017 and 2020.

In addition, the 747-8 offers training and operating efficiencies to UPS. Pilots of the companyโ€™s existing 747-400 fleet will enjoy a common equipment rating, allowing them to fly both aircraft types. Further, UPS will realize greater economies of scale in maintenance and ground handling by operating the -8 aircraft.

The 747-8 freighters carry 34 shipping containers on its main deck and 14 in its lower compartments.ย  The -8 has a cargo capacity of 307,600 pounds, or approximately 30,000 packages and a range of 4,340 nautical miles.

N605UP arrived at the Louisville (SDF) base and is currently operating crew proving flights around SDF. It will enter revenue service later this month.

The 747 fleet usually operateย from SDF to Anchorage, Alaska for refueling, and then on to its hubs in Asia.
