Aer Lingus to fly to both San Francisco and Toronto

Aer Lingus (Dublin) has announced it will reinstate the Dublin-San Francisco route on April 2, 2014. The Irish carrier is also planning to open a new route to Toronto (Pearson) on April 21, 2014 ย in competition with Air Canada rouge.

As previously reported, Aer Lingus is adding three leased Boeing 757-200s to supplement its Airbus fleet, allowing for some expansion.

Aer Lingus issued this statement:

Aer Lingus today (July 3) announced significant expansion to its trans-Atlantic route offering for 2014. In addition to its existing services fromย Boston, Chicago (O’Hare),ย New York (JFK) and Orlando, the airline will commence year roundย direct serviceย between San Francisco and Dublin from April 2014 with 5 services per week being operated by Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft.

Aer Lingus will also commence direct year-round service from Canada from April 2014. A daily direct Boeing 757 service between Toronto (Pearson) and Dublin will operate during the summer season, with up to four weekly services operating during the winter. Two Boeing 757 aircraft will be based in Shannon and will be used to deliver increased frequency on existing services from Boston and New York. Year-round connections from the east-coast to Shannon will be introduced. This expansion will directly support more than 200 new jobs.

In addition Aer Lingus customers from sixteen cities across the U.S. (including Seattle/Tacoma, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego) will benefit from convenient connections toย Irelandย via San Francisco, as well as a number of UK and European cities via Dublin. The new San Francisco route also represents aย business opportunityย for Aer Lingus Cargo.

Further to the direct service to Ireland from Toronto, Aer Lingus will provide connections from eight Canadian cities including Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. Once in Dublin, flights will connect to over twenty UK and European cities.

This growth plan will bring the Aer Lingus long haul schedule to 10 daily trans-Atlantic services, connectingย North Americaย with Ireland and Europe.

Sunwing Airlines reaches a tentative agreement with its flight attendants union, averting a strike

Sunwing Airlines (Toronto-Pearson) has reached a tentative agreement with its flight attendants represented by the CUPE union.

The agreement will be submitted to members of the union for a vote following a round of general meetings in March. If accepted, this will be the first collective agreement for Sunwing flight attendants, who voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in March 2012.

In early February, the union had raised the possibility of a strike at the end of March. With this tentative agreement, that scenario has been avoided.

The union will not comment on the details of the agreement until the conclusion of the voting period towards the end of March.

Air Georgian and Air Canada partner to offer a career path for aspiring pilots

Air Georgian (Toronto-Pearson) and Air Canada (Montreal) have jointly announced the creation of a uniqueย cadet pilot hiring programย for high-achieving Canadian youth. The program is designed to encourage young men and women to consider careers in commercial aviation by assisting them with pilot training and offering them a clearer path to rewarding employment opportunities. Candidates must be high school graduates with a strong academic record and have demonstrated leadership ability at school and in their community.

Eligible candidates will be selected by Air Georgian with the assistance of Air Canada. They will then receive two conditional offers of employment: The first offer, from Air Georgian, will be conditional upon successful completion of both a 50-week, student-funded, pilot training program at Flight Safety Academy in Vero Beach, Florida culminating in obtaining a Commercial Pilot Licence and a Multi-Engine Instrument Rating from Flight Safety Academy and Air Georgian-funded training at Flight Safety International in Toronto. The second offer of employment, from Air Canada, is contingent upon successful training and employment as a pilot with Air Georgian for a minimum of four years as well as on meeting certain employment standards at Air Canada.

“We are very excited about our Cadet Program partnership with Air Canada,”ย said Eric Edmondson, President of Air Georgian. “This program will help both Air Georgian and Air Canada attract, train and employ the best and the brightest youth in Canada in a very challenging and rewarding career. This is an innovative program designed to address our need for highly skilled labour, while offering some bright and enthusiastic young Canadians a clear school-to-work transition option. This partnership with Air Canada is the result of a number of years of working closely together transitioning pilots and specifically Captains from their first airline job at Air Georgian into a career position at Air Canada. This partnership represents a single stream of recruitment and retention programs offered under Air Georgian’s “One Regional” program. Other streams include a highly successful mentorship program through a partnership with Seneca College, as well as other retention programs.”

“Air Canada is pleased to partner with Air Georgian on this innovative program. This program gives high achieving young Canadians an opportunity to develop their skills and find fulfilling careers in the challenging world of commercial aviation,” said Captain Rick Allen, Senior Director Flight Operations at Air Canada. “Both carriers will benefit from the ability to attract top talent while customers will gain assurance from the knowledge our pilots are selected from among the best candidates who will receive intensive preparation through the program’s carefully-guided training regime with its emphasis on safety.”

Flight Safety International was chosen by Air Canada and Air Georgian to provide the initial training because it is the world’s leading aviation training company. The Flight Safety Academy at Vero Beach is a world class facility where the instruction and equipment used are second to none.
