Delta announces its additional seasonal service to Amsterdam and Italy

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will add summer seasonal to Amsterdam from Salt Lake City International Airport. The nonstop daily flight to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport launches on May 2, 2015.

According to the airline, this summer Delta has increased its network out of Schiphol, adding extra services to New York-JFK, Detroit and Minneapolis/St Paul in March, with an additional frequency to Seattle/Tacoma starting on May 4. The airline will operate up to 19 peak-day nonstop flights, responding to increased demand for service between the U.S. and the Netherlands during the peak summer travel period.

Delta is also increasing travel options for customers flying between Italy and the United States this summer. The U.S. airline will be restarting numerous seasonal services throughout May and June 2015. Flights will operate from four Italian cities – Rome, Milan, Pisa and Venice – to Delta’s hubs in New York-JFK, Atlanta and Detroit.

Expanded service at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Rome

In addition to restarting its seasonal service to Detroit Metropolitan-Wayne County Airport on May 2, 2015, Delta will launch a second frequency to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, effective May 23. The extra services complement Delta’s existing daily flights to Atlanta and New York-JFK, and take the total number of weekly seats on offer between Rome and the U.S. to over 14,000.

The seasonal flight from Rome to Detroit will operate daily using a Boeing 767-400 and the second Atlanta flight will operate up to six times weekly using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

Seasonal flights return to Venice and Pisa

Delta will restart a daily nonstop flight between Venice Marco Polo Airport and its Atlanta hub, effective June 2 using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft. The flight complements the existing daily New York-JFK service that was restarted at the end of March, meaning that Delta will operate two daily flights to the U.S. from Venice during the summer.

From Pisa, Delta will operate nonstop service to New York-JFK six times weekly using a Boeing 757-200 aircraft, effective June 16.

Extra service added at Milan Malpensa

Customers flying from Milan Malpensa Airport will benefit from a daily flight to Atlanta, effective June 17, complementing Delta’s existing daily service to New York-JFK. Operated using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft, the flight will add a further 3,150 weekly seats between Milan and the U.S..

Lufthansa to end PrivatAir service in October

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) will reportedly end its cooperative agreement with PrivatAir (Geneva) at the end of the summer season in late October per Airline Route. PrivatAir currently operates Boeing 737-800 aircraft for LH on the Frankfurt – Dammam and Frankfurt – Pune routes.

Etihad Airways’ 33.3% investment in Darwin Airline is approved

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) has now received approval from FOCA to acquire a 33.3 percent share of Darwin Airline (Lugano), now operating as Etihad Regional.

Etihad issued this statement:

Etihad Airways has received the approval from Switzerland’s Federal Office of Civil Aviation to take a 33.3 percent stake in Darwin Airline – a Swiss regional carrier.

Beginning January 2014, according to a brand partnership deal with Etihad Airways, Darwin Airline has operated as Etihad Regional.

FOCA’s approval of the investment now allows Etihad and Darwin to fully benefit from the partnership, including using codeshares on each other’s flights.

“Because of the time it took to secure this deal, and due to the fierce competition during this period, Etihad Regional has been obliged to withdraw or reduce services on numerous routes. They were launched based on the fact that they would benefit from the support of traffic running between our global network and our Etihad Regional European network,” said James Hogan, President and CEO of Etihad Airways.

Air Malta joins the growing list of airlines and changes its cockpit policies

Air Malta (Malta) has updated its Cockpit Policy and issued this statement:

The devastating airline incident this week has sparked a discussion around the world about how crew policies can be improved to enhance passenger safety.

Our thoughts are with the family members of these passengers as well as our colleagues around the world.

Air Malta is committed to continually improving its safety policies and maintaining its impeccable safety record.

In light of this, we have decided with immediate effect to make it compulsory to have two crew members in the cockpit at all times.

This measure complements our other security procedures already in place.

Finnair to open up routes to Umeå, Luleå, Norrköping and Visby in Sweden

Finnair (Helsinki) opens new routes to Sweden, and will fly daily to Luleå and Umeå on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia during the summer season 2015 connecting these growing centers to Finnair’s wide network of destinations in Asia, Europe and North America with daily frequencies.

Located by the Baltic Sea, Umeå is the largest city in northern Sweden, with a growing population and vibrant cultural life. Also by the Baltic Sea, Luleå is one of Sweden’s northernmost cities, with a long history in steel manufacturing and technical know-how.

Finnair is also taking over routes previously marketed by Flybe Finland from Helsinki to Visby on Gotland Island and to Norrköping in central Sweden.

Visby is known for its well-preserved medieval city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its beautiful scenery and historical attractions make it an ideal summer holiday destination. Norrköping is a lively city in central Sweden, and the host of Sweden’s largest music festival. Finnair flies to Norrköping daily, and to Visby three times per week during the summer season.

Finnair also operates several daily frequencies to Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Lufthansa Group announces its new summer holiday destinations

Lufthansa Group (Frankfurt) has announced new holiday destinations with this statement:

The airlines in the Lufthansa Group Airlines – Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings, Lufthansa and Swiss – will become even more attractive to holidaymakers and leisure travelers this upcoming summer. The airlines’ offer will be added above all with popular tourist and leisure-orientated destinations. Passengers will therefore be able to count on the high-quality service and dependability of a scheduled airline. During the summer holidays, many tourist destinations will be bolstered with further seasonal connections. Additional flights are planned to be added to existing city connections. This is good news especially for business travelers. They will be more flexible in managing their appointments.

The forthcoming 2015 summer flight timetable sees airlines in the Lufthansa Group offer their customers the densest route network in the world with more than 22,500 flights every week. Including the seasonal routes this summer, the Lufthansa Group airlines will be linking 321 destinations in 103 countries on four continents via its hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna and Brussels, but also with many point-to-point routes (previous summer: 294 destinations in 101 countries). Over 18,100 code-share flights with 32 partner airlines extend the flight schedule of all Lufthansa Group Airlines and offer an virtually world-wide network. The summer flight timetables for the individual Group airlines are valid from Sunday, 29 March to Saturday, 25 October 2015.

Lufthansa

Lufthansa will have a total of 215 destinations in its summer timetable and further develops its extensive offer. Within Europe, Lufthansa adds the Polish industrial and commercial city of Bydgoszcz to the airline’s flight timetable in summer 2015 as a new destination from Frankfurt. In future, Lufthansa will operate a total of around 240 flights per week to one of its nine destinations in Poland. Its routes to neighboring Denmark will also be expanded to include the northern Danish city of Aalborg, which will be served by a non-stop flight from Frankfurt. The sun destinations Heraklion (Crete/Greece) and Seville (Spain) are other new additions to Lufthansa’s flight timetable. Flights to Heraklion will depart from Munich and to the capital of Andalusia will leave from the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. Lufthansa customers will also be able to fly non-stop to Reykjavík (Iceland) from the two hubs for the first time. Bodrum (Aegean/Turkey) and Cagliari (Sardinia/Italy) are two existing seasonal destinations that are now connected to Frankfurt. Lufthansa will fly from Munich to Glasgow (Scotland/UK) and Perugia (Umbria/Italy) for the first time this summer. There will also be additional flights on existing Spanish connections from Frankfurt to Málaga, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia as well as from Munich to Bodrum. Customers will again be able to fly to the Egyptian capital Cairo from Munich, in addition to the existing route from Frankfurt.

The Airbus A380 (above), which has proved to be very popular among passengers, will be used on routes from Frankfurt to Los Angeles and Seoul once again in the summer. This will bring to eleven the number of destinations that Lufthansa flies to using the world’s largest passenger aircraft. On 25 September 2015, Lufthansa will launch its new intercontinental flight programme aimed specifically at leisure travelers. Tampa in the US state of Florida will be the first destination. An Airbus A340-300 will fly five times a week on this new year-round route to begin with. The other routes planned from Frankfurt – to Panama, Cancún, Malé and Mauritius – will be added this winter.

In its summer flight timetable, Germanwings is offering a total of 132 destinations in 31 countries from Berlin-Tegel, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart. Its flight connections from Düsseldorf to Athens (Greece), Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), Jersey and Reykjavík (Iceland) are all new. The airline is also adding two new routes from Düsseldorf in April to the Portuguese destinations of Porto and Faro. Its routes to France will be expanded as well to include the port city of Marseille. In future, it will fly non-stop from Berlin to Palermo (Sicily/Italy). There will be flights from Berlin and Hamburg to Izmir (Turkey) in the summer. Hamburg will also have a direct connection to Bari, the capital of Apulia. The new routes from Stuttgart to Nice, Amsterdam and Valencia will enhance the airline’s summer flight timetable. Cologne/Bonn to Priština (Kosovo) and Stuttgart to Tunis and to Tirana (Albania) will also be added as new routes during the summer holiday period.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss is adding 34 new destinations to its summer flight timetable in 2015. 22 of them will be served from Zurich, such as Leipzig, Bilbao (Spain) and Gothenburg (Sweden). Customers will be able to fly to 12 new cities from Geneva, including Valencia and Dublin. The frequency of flights to various European cities and to San Francisco will also be increased. Swiss will thus be offering its customers 106 destinations (80 European and 26 intercontinental) in 49 countries in the summer.

Austrian Airlines

In summer 2015, Austrian Airlines will be offering its passengers a wide range of up to 130 destinations in 58 countries. In 2015, the Austrian domestic carrier will be increasing its focus on holiday destinations. For example, Menorca (Balearics/Spain) will be newly added to the flight timetable in June 2015, as will Miami in October 2015. From summer 2015, all of Austrian’s destinations in North America will be served from Vienna up to daily. From March 2015, Odessa (Ukraine) will be included once again as another destination in Austrian’s focus market of Eastern Europe.

Brussels Airlines

This summer, Belgium’s leading carrier Brussels Airlines is adding ten new European destinations to its flight timetable from Brussels. These include destinations popular with tourists such as the three new French airports in Bordeaux, Lourdes-Pyrénées and Calvi (Corsica). Other holiday locations like Dubrovnik and Zagreb (both in Croatia), St. Petersburg (Russia), Olbia (Sardinia/Italy) and Ibiza (Balearics/Spain) will enhance the route network of Brussels Airlines. New city destinations such as Riga (Latvia) and Billund (Denmark) will be served by non-stop flights from Brussels. The carrier will also resume its long-haul service to Washington in the summer and its existing African route to Yaoundé (Cameroon) will operate daily.

Lufthansa is hit again by another round of strikes by its pilots

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) is being impacted today (March 18) by another round of strikes by its pilots, represented by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC). Today’s strike is affecting short and medium-haul flights in Europe. The pilots have also called for another strike tomorrow, this time affecting its long-haul flights.

The airline has been plagued by strikes by its pilots.

The airline issued this statement:

The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) has announced strike action on March 18, 2015, affecting short and medium haul flights operated by Lufthansa. All Lufthansa long haul operations are scheduled to operate as normal. Also not affected by the strike are flights operated by Germanwings, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti; Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines. Lufthansa Cityline will also remain largely unaffected by the industrial action.

Despite the strike, the Lufthansa Group will continue to operate the majority of the 3000 daily scheduled flights and passengers will be offered flight alternatives via rebooking.

The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit have announced strike action for March 19, 2015, affecting Lufthansa long haul flights. Short haul flights will not be affected.

A special flight schedule will be published early afternoon on March 18, 2015.

Passengers are kindly requested to check the status of their flight prior to departure.

Turkish Airlines orders four additional Airbus A330-200F freighters

Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) has signed a firm order for the purchase of four additional A330-200F freighter aircraft. Operated by Turkish Cargo, a brand of Turkish Airlines, the additional aircraft will help to further boost the company’s expansion in the cargo market.

Turkish Airlines already operates five A330-200F freighters (above), and the additional order will enable them to quickly meet the growing cargo market demand.

Turkish Airlines operates the largest Airbus fleet in Turkey with a total of 139 Airbus aircraft in service. These include 91 single aisle aircraft, two A310 freighters, 17 A330-200s, 18 A330-300s, five A330-200Fs and six A340s.

The A330-200F is capable of carrying a payload of 65 to 70 tons, with a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles.

airBaltic adds more routes for the summer

airBaltic (Riga) has announced it is expanding its European network next summer with these new routes:

The company will start the Riga-Pisa route on June 13 with one weekly Boeing 737 flight.

The Tallinn-Vienna route will be added on May 7 with Bombardier Q400 aircraft with four weekly flights.

The Tallinn-Berlin route will also be added on May 6 with four weekly Bombardier Q400 flights.

The carrier is also launching summer weekly flights to Usedom Island (Heringsdorf) on May 9 with Bombardier Q400 aircraft.

State-controlled EuroLOT to be liquidated, will shut down on March 31

EuroLOT (eurolot.com) (Warsaw) is giving up in its financial struggle. According to Radio Poland, the struggling airline is not taking any reservations past March 31.

According to report, the airline has been exploring its options for the past two months and concluded it could not make the company profitable. The state airline will be liquidated. The treasury of Poland controls 62.1 percent of the shares.
